pietrovismara··on Silenced AirTags with disabled speakers are popping up for sale online
The price I found was for a 4 pack (100€), my bad.

> How is this a privacy/security nightmare, when you literally get

Did you even read the article?

I may be full of myself, but you seem to take personal offense over an apple product. That's basically shilling and frankly pathetic, unless you get paid for it.

No need to get all defensive for the poor airtag, just explain why you think I'm wrong. Like the fruit company needs your protection anyway.

pietrovismara··on Silenced AirTags with disabled speakers are popping up for sale online
The tech existed already and it was cheaper. Airtags just ripped off existing technology without substantially improving it, while causing a privacy/security nightmare that none of the other devices ever caused.

But hey if you want to spend 80$ for something that was already available 2 years ago for 40$ you go ahead.

Is there anything left in this world that hasn't been corrupted by greed and thirst for power?

I wonder how many people actually believe Ayn Rand to be "their favorite person", after having met her. I believe one could count them on one hand.
pietrovismara··on In the end, you're treated like a spy, says MIT scientist
> lots of technology that took billions of dollars and decades to develop? Why would you give that away for free?

I don't know, ask Alexander Fleming maybe. To save lives? Make the life better for scores of other people, no matter their nationality or class? Why do you even do research, just for the bilions?

pietrovismara··on In the end, you're treated like a spy, says MIT scientist
> There are politically powerful people who would see these things used to ends that hurt others for their own gain. It happens all the time, and likely will as long as humans are what we are.

Don't you think this group of politically powerful people might include the ones you research for?

pietrovismara··on In Argentina, inflation is a way of life
I was referring to Chile, as mentioned 2 comments up, not Argentina
pietrovismara··on In Argentina, inflation is a way of life
Inflation adjusted salaries would have had the same effect in terms of enabling the housing ladder climb. If you only lock interest rates to inflation what you get is a population of insolvents, and richer banks.
pietrovismara··on How the Soviets put a lander on Venus
Nothing. The statement reeks of capitalist/american fragility. People can't tolerate the idea that capitalism isn't the absolute best choice in completely every aspect of our lives.
pietrovismara··on 70% of startups offer remote work options as hiring heats up, YC data shows
1. That 55% doesn't go in the trash bin, it goes to pay the schools your children will attend, the hospitals your family might need, the streets you use to commute etc.

2. It's insane for individuals to give up equity just to avoid 55% taxes. They are doing themselves out of 45% rather than winning 90%.

pietrovismara··on 70% of startups offer remote work options as hiring heats up, YC data shows
A common solution is to use employers of record, intermediary companies residing in the country you want to hire in that hire the employee for you using local contracts. Then as an employee you can travel where you want, you will work under the laws of the country your contract was written in.
pietrovismara··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
That's what it has become in an economic system that failed at its only task, ensuring proper distribution of resources. Most jobs serve only the purpose of making a restricted group of people richer, while stealing the workers' time on earth and often worsening society.

Edit: if you think that's not true, you live in a bubble. Try some of the jobs the majority of the population has to put up with, then we can talk again.

pietrovismara··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
> I'm saving as much money as I can to escape wage slavery then just coasting the rest of my life without living another productive second.

In the meantime, don't forget to steal as much as you can (https://repeaterbooks.com/product/steal-as-much-as-you-can-h...).

pietrovismara··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
OP doesn't realize that 87% of the US population (being one of the richest in the world) makes less than $90k.

That means that by his view 9 persons out of 10 won't be able to retire. Which I actually believe is true.

The irony of admitting this while at the same time praising this system with statements like

>Part (by no means all) of the growth one sees abroad is due to acceptance and often positive attitudes about work, with less emphasis on "fairness".

What kind of growth are we seeing? Why should we have a positive attitude about work, when it's just a mean of transfering wealth upwards?

pietrovismara··on Project Cybersyn and the Origins of the Big Data Nation (2014)
Then why shouldn't states do the same?
pietrovismara··on Project Cybersyn and the Origins of the Big Data Nation (2014)
And how is the global market not unnecessarily complex? It is optimized for the wrong metric (profit) at the cost of every other one, causing additional complexity and hurting overall resiliency.

The market is a constant failure at the only thing it should do, properly distributing resources. It's failing clamorously to distribute covid vaccines globally, for example. Additionally, it is easily exploitable everytime there is any unbalance, see bargainers.

The lack of control you seem to present as an advantage is exactly what makes it controllable by a very small minority of powerful entities.

Actually I start to see some parallels with the theoretical "lack of control" that is claimed to be the advantage of cryptocurrencies by enthusiasts.

Yeah, it's the system that the "fruit company" (it really is a powerful multinational corporation, you make it sound harmless) lays its foundations upon that privates me of my freedom.
pietrovismara··on Tell HN: Full macOS reinstall because Apple ID
The X1 comes with a variety of CPUs depending on the gen and the price tag AFAIK. Make the comparison on CPU power and available RAM, not on the model. I owned an X1 carbon for a year and half (work laptop) and it would handle any workload (multiple open editors, dozens of browser tabs open, docker-compose with multiple services on, etc) without lag, while still having a great battery life. The price tag for my model was ~2200€.

Now I use a somewhat old P51 and it's an absolute beast, but is certainly a brick when compared to lighter models like the X1 or a MacBook.

Lenovo Thinkpad and Dell precision are two product lines of the same tier or higher. With both you can choose your OS and with most Thinkpad models you can even customize the hardware, plus you get 3 years of on-site express assistance for less than 100€. These are all durable machines that will last you years.

Except when your tool stops working as intended because the company that sold it to you still has more power over it than you do and suddenly you can't work to sustain yourself with the tool you paid for.
pietrovismara··on Tell HN: Full macOS reinstall because Apple ID
Why not? Sell your overpriced mac and buy a new better non-apple laptop for less money. It It would have been faster than trying to deal with apple's customer support.
pietrovismara··on Pentagon and CIA shaped thousands of Hollywood movies into effective propaganda
Oh well, the 24 millions dead soviets thank you for the Jeeps. That definitely made a difference. What a sacrifice for America.

Why can't I flag this disgusting comment?
pietrovismara··on Copyright doesn't need 95 years to get the job done
It depends on which kind of "works" we're talking about.

I seriously doubt that passionate authors would refrain themselves from writing because they've been denied a few extra bucks after their death. Many would probably be happier to know that their legacy goes on through the now possible derivative work.

Could such a restriction on copyright impact purely commercial works? I don't care. Work made just for profit has no soul anyway.

pietrovismara··on We need to reclaim our attention
Isn't for a game to be thrilling usually the ultimate goal? I'm not concerned about games being fun to play, that's what they are for. I'm more concerned about the dopamine exploiting patterns implemented in modern games, especially those targeted at younger gamers.
pietrovismara··on The gift of it's your problem now
In an ideal socialist economy, I could imagine engineers being sponsored by the state to work on FOSS, similarly to what happened in USSR with the Artists' union or in Tito's Yugoslavia.
pietrovismara··on The gift of it's your problem now
But if the community reacts like this then you didn't really solve a problem for them. At least they didn't see it this way.

Perhaps a more apt analogy: you invent a better water filtering system and provide it to the world for free.

The community immediately starts using it as the benefits are undeniable, but now the community needs someone to do maintenance on their new filter system and you are the only one with the required expertise.

Should they "sponsor" you or is it fair of them to expect you to provide them support for free?

pietrovismara··on Ask HN: Why doesn't YC list compensation for their own open positions?
Well, it's a shame but I guess that individual asking twice as much as everyone else will be left without a job...

There's a better way to get higher salaries: fight so that everyone gets a higher one.

I found "on the suffering of the world" by Schopenhauer to be eye opening, especially his thoughts on death.
