pieter··on Nokia Lumia 800
I think only Android devices ship with >512MiB RAM. More RAM is more expensive and eats your battery. The iPhone seems to work fine with 512MB, perhaps it's just Android that needs it?
pieter··on Reality of budget VPS services
Amazon isn't really budget. The free tier is nice, and the tiny instances are priced ok, but beyond that they're quite expensive for a VPs. The nice thing with AWS is the scaling and the supporting infrastructure, but you do pay for that compared to more basic VPS offerings.
pieter··on Maxing out your Dropbox referrals (how I got 16GB for less than $10)

pieter··on Daring Fireball: The iPhone 4S
This doesn't sound at all like Apple. More likely, they'll determine which services are the best for which type of query, and you'll only be able to use those.
pieter··on Daring Fireball: The iPhone 4S
I wonder how they'll handle different grammar constructions in different languages.

For example, in English, "Text my girlfriend that I'm coming home later" would send a message with "I'm coming home later".

However, in Dutch, saying the same thing "SMS mijn vriendin dat ik later thuiskom" should result in a text with the content "Ik kom later thuis", requiring labeling all parts of the sentence.

pieter··on Facebook for iPad
Nice to see the names of the Sofa guys show up in those screenshots!
pieter··on Show HN: (first iPhone App) Picsicle - Customized Photo Postcards
Hey, I tried your app but didn't order a card. Here's why:

I had to manually enter addresses instead of being able to select them from my address book. This is really annoying, I'd rather have only the option to select pcontacts than being able to enter custom addresses

The second reason is I had to enter my CC info to orde a card. I'd rather do this through inapp purchases and then wouldn't mind paying a dollar more for it.

Finally, 4-6 weeks delivery really is too long for a "I'll just send a card from my vacation location" type of thing.

pieter··on Sprint to 'Bet the Company' on iPhone
Yes, but WIMAX is pretty much dead, even Sprint's dropping it for LTE. I just don't see Apple producing a new phone with WiMAX and having to test a completely different radio technology when they pretty much know it won't last for more than a few years.
pieter··on Sprint to 'Bet the Company' on iPhone
You have to compare it to the alternative -- how many sales on Verizon / AT&T will they lose with this exclusivity? How many phones would they sell on Sprint if it was available there, just not exclusively?
pieter··on A review of all available Hacker News iPad Apps
The links are a bit small to click on comfortably, and the comments are rendered a bit too wide, which makes you have to zoom in and pan to read them.
pieter··on No Windows 8 ARM support for x86 apps
Rosetta worked because the switch to intel processors gave Apple such a performance boost compared to their PPC systems, that existing PPC applications worked with about the same performance as they used to on PPC native.

The same probably wouldn't be true for i386 -> ARM.

pieter··on How To Encrypt Your Gmail & Facebook Messages
Of course your autosaves will still be sent to gmail in plaintext while writing your original message.
pieter··on UK joins laser nuclear fusion project
I think they can produce them within the reactor, by using a mantle of Lithium, just like fission reactors can use mantles of heavier elements.
pieter··on Startups should not use GoDaddy. Ever
I agree with GoDaddy being horrible, but this really isn't just their fault. Certificate revocation does exactly what it says. It's a technical term that everyone using SSL should know and understand the implications of. Their offer of creating a new certificate for you for $15 actually sounds pretty decent.

And, you don't have backups of all your data and domains? While running your sites on a shared host? This really sounds like something that was bound to happen to you. Be glad you got it fixed and I hope you learned your lesson.

pieter··on Netherlands judge rules Samsung Galaxy S, S II violate Apple patents, bans sales
Yes, this is exactly what they're going to do. They've already said they'll update the firmware before the deadline to remove the scrolling behavior, so their phones won't get taken out of the stores.

pieter··on The Smartphone Patent War, In 1 Graphic
The graphic is unfortunately not very clear, for example because the arrows can split midway. This way it looks like Microsoft is suing just one company without being countersued, while in reality they're suing three companies.

I only started using HTTPS after HTTP stopped working, so that's probably not it.

pieter··on SpaceX to fly to International Space Station in November
Next to the fact that NASA would rather give money to a US company, which will invest part of it to develop cheaper and more capable rockets, than to Russia, these SpaceX costs are likely to be significantly cheaper than Soyuz.

In 2007, NASA got a deal for $719 million for 5.6 tons and 15 seats. Seats on Soyuz now cost ~$60 million a piece, or $900 million just for 15 seats. The price for cargo then probably also increased.

Perhaps you can add a list of default applications that many people want to silence, and offer to silence them automatically once the user runs them.
pieter··on The Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader is live
Yes, the most annoying thing is you have to pay the Whispernet tax even if you don't have a Kindle and just want to read books online or on your iPad.
pieter··on The Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader is live
There's no problem in using the Kindle store from other countries -- you're just paying $3-$5 dollars more for exactly the same thing as you'd get if you are registered in the US.

You can check this by going to the same kindle page with an account with a US-based address, or a proxy in the US. For example, here are the prices for two ebooks, one from .nl and one through an anonymous proxy:

http://minus.com/mbutwbl

As you can see, one of the books is more than twice as expensive from Europe. The same happens with all books in the Kindle store, as far as I know.

pieter··on The Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader is live
Nice. Now, if they'd just drop their surcharge for ordering ebooks in mainland Europe I might actually use it. Paying $3-%5 extra per book just because I live somewhere else doesn't make sense with ebooks.
pieter··on Exploit writer spills beans on secret iPhone function
Summary: you can create a serial cable with a dock connector so you can debug exploits if they crash the kernel.
pieter··on Secure your browsing using a home VPN
I have the same, but then use sshuttle [1] for a quick secure connection. Only does TCP, but if that doesn't bother you you can get it set up in 2 minutes.

pieter··on BBC iPlayer European Launch Disappoints Brits Abroad
This sounds pretty nice. Together with an AppleTV and Airplay, it makes it really easy to watch BBC stuff on our TV, if only the AppleTV was available in the Netherlands..
pieter··on BBC iPlayer European Launch Disappoints Brits Abroad
Probably because a) it's easy to restrict access to Europe with the app store and b) it's easy to charge money using the app store. I guess BBC doesn't have their own system in place yet to do subscriptions etc.
pieter··on Ars Technica’s OS X Lion review made $15,000+ in 24 hours on the Kindle
I wish they'd sell the ebook through different channels. The $4.99 ebook on Amazon is actually $8.04 if you want to buy it from the Netherlands. Still not a lot of money, but it makes me feel like I'm getting ripped off. I know it's Amazons fault with their silly fees (their $1.99 Unmasked ebook is $4.59), but still.
