pierrefermat1··on P99 0 ms* autocomplete for 240M domain names
Yes, OP seems to have completely lost touch with what is actually useful vs optimizing metrics for the sake of it.
pierrefermat1··on Show HN: I spent 2 years designing a mechanical Magic Keyboard
For those in the comment section looking for a split alternative to this, there is this Kickstarter(be warned of the usual problems with Kickstarters):

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ryanlpeterman/compose-s...

or this that is in stock but doesn't exactly follow Apple's layout

pierrefermat1··on ARC-AGI Leaderboard
What seems to implied is that some of his hold out testing suite includes simple/common tests that are out in the wild, and for those opus went straight to a memorised solution .
pierrefermat1··on Multimodal WFH setup: flight SIM, EE lab, and music studio in 60sqft/5.5M²
There is no contrast lol, if you actually consider the other gear choices he made they are all equally terrible. The god awfully un-ergo chair, poor measuring LS50's, junk keyboard......
pierrefermat1··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
The instant on thing actually bothered me enough to make switch from windows back to Mac( by proxy the idle battery drain on windows was also pretty terrible)
pierrefermat1··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
Depends on your definition of "instant".

What we really mean is before you complete the action of fully opening the hinge to 120deg which is something like 1.5-2seconds?

AFAIK pre M1 days it would be still a few seconds after fully opening and now it's more like < 1sec.

pierrefermat1··on Ongoing Lean formalization of the proof for Fermat's Last Theorem
The concept trying new science orgs is noble, but this is the typical Schmidt BS of saying every previous academic consortia is totally incompetent and I'm the only one that can inject the magic sauce of focus and coordination.
pierrefermat1··on Show HN: A personal YouTube frontend based on yt-dlp
Would really appreciate if you could add some options for download quality(with webm merge for 4k support), gave it a go and it just by default downloads the 360p MP4.
pierrefermat1··on GLP-1 drugs: An economic disruptor? (2024)
40% alochol consumption reduction did not lead to "a fundamental restructuring of the social economy"

The hyperbole is just painful to listen to

pierrefermat1··on A Billion Pixels a Second: Inside Apple's iPhone 16 Camera Labs
The reality is journalists don't really have the knowledge to explain any specifics at all, so you just get this fluff. But hey at least there's pretty pictures
pierrefermat1··on Fermat's Last Theorem – how it’s going
I think the better mapping of unit tests would actually be proofs of lemmas ?
pierrefermat1··on NYC wants you to stop taking traffic cam selfies, but here's how to do it anyway
Actually curious what the minimum bitrate/resolution they could store with to be still usable in court
pierrefermat1··on Edging Toward Japan: In his mind's eye, Rembrandt was always headed toward Japan
See authors profile, he is stupidly biased in forcing this connection.
pierrefermat1··on Rats learned to drive
Same here, refusing to load
pierrefermat1··on Boxed – Things I learned after lying in an MRI machine for 30 hours
Curious if you could link some relevant papers on this?
pierrefermat1··on Dawn of a new era in Search: Balancing innovation, competition, and public good
It seems like in their mind the snake ate it's tail without realising, so they don't even know what's outside of Google's index.
pierrefermat1··on Dawn of a new era in Search: Balancing innovation, competition, and public good
Yes OP is hilariously out of touch, the storage would be sub 1% of total costs.
pierrefermat1··on What Life Means to Einstein (1929) [pdf]
If you purely value scientists with some sort of Value Over RePlacement metric on their scientific contribution alone, I would like to think Einstein is tier 1 along side another 20-50 people.
pierrefermat1··on What Life Means to Einstein (1929) [pdf]
Sure not your average scientist, but could I find a few hundred who have but who are themselves of no particular fame? Quite easily yes.
pierrefermat1··on Air Con: $1697 for an on/off switch
It seems like in this particular situation if you had a mainland chinese friend, he would have been able to source a replacement tablet panel for the cheap on 1688.com for ~50 USD.
pierrefermat1··on The Future of TLA+ [pdf]
I've only play with TLA+ for a small amount of time but absolutely agree with the maths statement being way off the mark.

Building out any real maths with logic operators yourself is just not feasible in a meaningful timescale.

pierrefermat1··on Eric Schmidt deleted Stanford interview
Yes at the extremes where you have sufficient leverage the hours are irrelevant, but for any pre-IPO stage CEO my statement is clearly not a misconception.
pierrefermat1··on Eric Schmidt deleted Stanford interview
There is a difference between knowing if a blind spot exists vs knowing what in the blind spot.

I.E. taking a driving lesson and learning that there's a blind spot in your rear view mirror

pierrefermat1··on Eric Schmidt deleted Stanford interview
Your CEO may very well be working those hours too except for good reason since he's value aligned+ highly leveraged and able to capture the benefits from the extra work
pierrefermat1··on Eric Schmidt deleted Stanford interview
The biggest difference between him and a "normal smart person" is they realize they have blind spots and choose not to publicly spout opinions on them.
pierrefermat1··on Exo: Run your own AI cluster at home with everyday devices
This is so hilariously bad, how does something like this end up needing to be a user created Github issue and not being caught when you guys launch.
pierrefermat1··on Show HN: Hooper – AI-driven stats and highlights for basketball play
Are you using some sort of naive profanity filtering for profile names? I couldn't create an user name with "assist" in it due to "ass" being included?
pierrefermat1··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
I suppose you are only referring to the young directly involved, but the young watching the comp could also be just as impressionable and start looking into using the same drugs.

But my real take is this hopefully gets everyone to understand how meaningless/ugly this all is and actually combats PED use that way.

pierrefermat1··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
https://www.scott-sports.com/us/en/products/bike-ebikes-road

I think Scott has one of the cleanest looking road bike ebikes around, but many other brands do the same. With how chunky aero bikes are they are indistungishable to the masses.

pierrefermat1··on Exo: Run your own AI cluster at home with everyday devices
Would be great if we could get some benchmarks on commonly available hardware setups.
