pier25··on Ruby vs. Java vs. TypeScript: my experience on building a Cowork DOCX plugin
support is not uniform though

eg: https://jsr.io/@std/dotenv

pier25··on Ruby vs. Java vs. TypeScript: my experience on building a Cowork DOCX plugin
yeah I wish Node had something like that
pier25··on Ruby vs. Java vs. TypeScript: my experience on building a Cowork DOCX plugin
Many runtimes/languages rely on third party deps for that. Also plenty of devs think the stdlib should be as lean as possible.

Personally, I think there should be a balance. The direct consequence of a barebones stdlib is NPM and having to download hundreds of dependencies for a hello world.

pier25··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
> And I suspect it's probably higher within Anthropic

That probably explains why their uptime and reliability are so bad.

pier25··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
Yes, when he made that claim back in 2024 they were spending like $100M to train a model.
pier25··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
Yeah I'll believe it when I see it. Revenue is increasing but so are their costs.

Back in 2024 their CEO claimed training costs would rise to $10-100B in the next years.

pier25··on Migrating from Go to Rust
For example, security. See all the supply chain attacks from the past couple of years.
pier25··on Electrobun 2.0 will be decoupled from Bun due to the Rust rewrite
> none of them seem to want to abandon npm which keeps getting exploited and hacked

Do you know of a better alternative for JS/TS that has all the popular packages?

pier25··on Deno 2.8
True but it only became the "default" choice a couple of years ago.

Before eg 2020 it still wasn't clear if TS was another CoffeeScript.

pier25··on Deno 2.8
It's probably coming:

https://tc39.es/proposal-type-annotations/

pier25··on Deno 2.8
Only if you think Anthropic is a sustainable business per se which remains to be seen.
pier25··on Deno 2.8
Bun doesn't require special tooling since it uses standard TS and follows the Node conventions. With Deno you need special tooling for eg the weird import system and package manager.

Bun also includes stuff that you'd need a third party dependency with Deno or Node. Eg: database drivers, S3 client, etc.

Finally, Bun overall has better performance and efficiency compared to Deno.

That said, I'm going back to Node after the recent Bun fiascos with their Rust AI re-write.

pier25··on Bun's unreleased Rust port has 13,365 unsafe blocks
This PR piece is only making things worse.
pier25··on Node.js 26.0.0 (Now with Temporal)
Something that uses WASM probably has more chances to succeed given the massive effort/investment in the past decade to shift from JS to TS.
pier25··on Node.js 26.0.0 (Now with Temporal)
Initially it didn't make sense to me... but it looks like type striping is really the way to go for future TS.

There's the "types as comments" proposal[1] which could even land on browsers one day.

I started using the erasableSyntaxOnly setting in my tsconfig to get ready for this.

pier25··on I’ve joined Anthropic
> He sort of left OpenAI before it really hit the inflection point

Sorry I'm out of the loop... What inflection point are you referring to?

pier25··on Mini Shai-Hulud Strikes Again: 314 npm Packages Compromised
Third parties can detect compromised packages. It’s ridiculous Microsoft doesn’t.
pier25··on No more JetBrains products for me
"but we've invested so much in our AI integration, are you sure you don't want to use it?"
pier25··on Anthropic acquires Stainless
Rust rewrite coming up in a week
pier25··on An AI Hate Wave Is Here
The hate is not about the tech.

It's about the greed, lies, fascism, and basically that AI is making almost everything it touches worse.

pier25··on Native all the way, until you need text
I don’t know. Resizing a window with complex ui in html tends to be faster than native guis for me. It haven’t tested this properly though.
pier25··on Native all the way, until you need text
Maybe controversial but I think HTML + CSS is truly the most powerful system to make GUIs.

There’s really nothing else out there that competes with a similar performance and productivity.

This old article by the Missive team (the email client) convinced me.

pier25··on Bun Rust rewrite: "codebase fails basic miri checks, allows for UB in safe rust"
This is my biggest issue with all this.

It's not that they're using AI, it's the massive rug pull on bun users.

pier25··on Rewrite Bun in Rust has been merged
Maybe Anthropic decided to push this because of all the attention the experiment got.

If it works out it’ll be a good study case for marketing.

pier25··on Rewrite Bun in Rust has been merged
This will burn the little reputation and trust Bun has been able to achieve in the past couple of years.

I guess this is what happens when you only have to respond to your corporate overlords.

I will migrate my Bun projects in production to something else.

pier25··on The Future of Obsidian Plugins
Tried it with this URL:

https://community.obsidian.md/

Most of the content is missing.

pier25··on The Future of Obsidian Plugins
It works for blog posts and articles but not anything more complex than that.
pier25··on The Future of Obsidian Plugins
I use Obsidian with light mode ;)

(also applied to work with you!)

pier25··on Googlebook
The AI device thing reeks of 2024.

Nobody wants AI embedded into the OS spying on you every move.

pier25··on Googlebook
Yeah this is going the way of the Pixelbook.
