pieix··on Since becoming Meta, Facebook’s parent company has lost $650B in market value
Fertility rates have been declining across the developed and developing world for decades [0]. We haven't relied upon VR to maintain a reasonable standard of living thus far — why would such a change be inevitable in the future?

pieix··on Prose.sh – A blog platform for hackers
For many, that gap is sufficiently filled by GitHub Pages.
pieix··on We Need to Stop Pretending we can Limit Global Warming to 1.5°C
Discourse around climate change is about problems, not solutions.
pieix··on The Pivot to Web3 Is Going to Get People Hurt
Who would mine those blocks? There has to be value in it for them. And there better be a lot of it — such a ledger would be an extremely appealing target for bad actors.
pieix··on Show HN: Code Hike – More than syntax highlighting
On the Lorem Ipsum code blocks: in typesetting Lorem Ipsum exists to provide the shape of text without the content. This seems directly contrary to the goals of your examples. Nobody likes looking at Lorem Ipsum and nobody ever reads Lorem Ipsum.
pieix··on SpinLaunch completes first test flight with rocket-flinging launch system
Why would they when the military is one of the biggest and most reliable funders of space technology?
pieix··on Scattered thoughts on why I waste my own time
As somebody who found it far easier to give up nicotine than 4chan, I empathize.
pieix··on Space Launch Startup Just Used a Giant Centrifuge to Fling a Projectile into Th
>However, the rocket component is not a necessity for putting an object into orbit, the company explains on its website: “Because kinetically launched satellites exit the atmosphere without a rocket, SpinLaunch enables a future in which constellations of satellites and space payloads can be launched with zero emissions in the most critical layers of the atmosphere.”

Agreed that this seems like a misinterpretation by the article’s author. A suborbital trajectory with 2km/s dv can certainly leave the atmosphere before the upper stage starts burning which I think is what SpinLaunch is referring to here. Depending on how you cut it the stated 200,000ft / 60km ignition altitude quoted in the article can already be considered “above the atmosphere.”

pieix··on Space Launch Startup Just Used a Giant Centrifuge to Fling a Projectile into Th
SpinLaunch isn’t trying to throw payloads directly into orbit, just replace the first stage of a conventional 2-stage launcher. Their target exit velocity is ~2km/s which is equivalent to the staging velocity on a Falcon 9. They’ve released renderings of a liquid-fueled upper stage but have been light on details thus far.
pieix··on The Melancholy of Subculture Society (2019)
A subculture is more similar in scale to human societies during the majority of those 100s of thousands of years of evolution than to the mega/giga scale of modern society.
pieix··on Never update anything
That’s great to hear, I’m one of the people who complained loudly about that unacceptable behavior. Guess I’ll be reinstalling.
pieix··on Ask HN: Who's not sucky to work for?
What else does it tell you?
pieix··on Habits I've developed for fast and efficient programming
This sentiment echoes Socrates' famous position regarding the written word:

>If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls. They will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks.

Both his point about writing and your point about Copilot are likely true in part or in whole. Ultimately it doesn't matter — the technology is here to stay and its adoption will be determined by the utility it provides its user.

pieix··on Original 1851 reviews of Moby-Dick
This review is a fantastic reproduction of Melville's style in Moby-Dick. It must have been intentional, and tongue-in-cheek!
pieix··on Ask HN: What does one look for in a laptop these days?
The M1 Air not having fans is the real game changer for me. If you haven't used a laptop without fans you probably don't realize how good things could be.
pieix··on DeepMind's plot to break away from Google
More than anything this article illustrates how inflated DeepMind's sense of self-importance is.
pieix··on Show HN: Web browser to help programmers think clearly
This is fantastic. Seconding the comment that this isn't only for developers—optimizing all user experiences for ease of use has become an antipattern and what's needed is UX that optimizes for preserving the user's brainspace.
pieix··on L.A. Times to Furlough Workers as Ad Revenue ‘Nearly Eliminated’
The data I have seen does not corroborate this — in fact exactly the opposite.

According to [0] Sweden has 11,445 cases and 1,033 deaths (CFR: 9%) as of 6pm PT 4/14. For a population of 10.3 million [1], this is a confirmed infection rate of 0.11%.

According to [2] California has 23,338 cases and 758 deaths (CFR: 3.2%) as of 6pm PT 4/14. For a population of 39.5 million [3], this is a confirmed infection rate of 0.06%.

By all accounts, Sweden is being hit far harder by this virus than California or Sweden’s own neighbors are, and based on this evidence it is reasonable to infer that the distancing measures or lack thereof have an effect on transmission.

pieix··on Johns Hopkins CSSE Covid-19 Global Case Dashboard
Per CDC numbers [0], in the US the death rate of the flu for the 2018-19 season was roughly 0.1%, an order of magnitude lower than the number quoted above.

pieix··on Toyota will transform 175-acre Japan site into a ‘prototype city of the future’
This is exactly what GP meant by "blinders" — people (including children, the elderly, the disabled) should be free to engage in healthy, enjoyable, green recreational activities without fear of death by two ton tank.
pieix··on European Cloud Project Draws Backlash from U.S. Tech Giants
Could you provide a citation for the claim that European countries have had a hard time repatriating gold held in the US?
pieix··on Computer Files Are Going Extinct
It seems to me that this is the clear trend. MacOS is increasingly “mobilizing” and Microsoft has already moved to a Windows-as-a-Service [0]. The only sane desktop/workstation choice is Linux and the rift grows wider every year. As the number of use cases for a workstation OS continue to diminish and the big players stop catering to that market segment, sooner or later we’ll reach the fabled Year of the Linux Desktop!

pieix··on California passes bill that classifies gig economy workers as employees
Thank you for posting the exact wording of the bill.

Which of these three clauses are not satisfied by drivers for a ridesharing company?

pieix··on Tech backlash has come to Stanford
In my experience business ethics courses encourage behavior that is a far cry from what the rest of us would consider ethical — effectively boiling down to “generating the most value for shareholders”.
pieix··on Nobody talks about the real reason to use Tabs over Spaces
This is not really true; ‘w’ is one row up from the home row and is easily accessible with the middle or ring finger. An arrow key is a hand-shift or an awkward pinky stretch away. Vim keybindings were explicitly designed to be simpler than arrow keys once you’ve gotten over the learning curve.
pieix··on Inside Erlang – Joe Armstrong tells his story (2014)
Do you mind elaborating a bit on your use case for PXE booting?
pieix··on Goodbye Docker and Thanks for all the Fish
The article goes on to elaborate on that statement, claiming that Docker as a container runtime is going to get elbowed out of the market by faster, safer, more feature-rich container runtimes.
pieix··on NASA May Decide This Year to Land a Drone on Saturn's Moon Titan

pieix··on Letter from Tim Cook to Apple Investors
Unbelievable! In all of my searching and asking around for exactly this I was unable to find a suitable app. Thank you for sharing—and, to the author who may be browsing this, thank you for sticking up for us digital dinosaurs who refuse to integrate into the “library as a service” dystopia. Let me know if you ever need a helping hand.
