Most of my non-techie friends have heard briefly about "some kind of scandal with facebook" but I cannot possibly appeal to them talking about "privacy" or they are stealing and selling your data - "Oh, everybody does that, you can't not use the Internet".
I think space tech is a different beast economically - the intensive had been more to compete for global dominance in the 1960s and not so much demand (from the general public) to travel in space. I believe there is a bigger intensive to have faster processors now but we might be hitting physical/engineering limitations so we go distributed.
The difference is these few days blew off the periphery of uncertain users. It won't hurt them now, but in the long run - it may be like tobacco. Annectodal example from here on.
I've tried many times to quit Facebook, these latest ones threw me off board for good. I tried to do it smartly by contacting people I know and want to keep in touch with and then posted on my wall and my profile pic that I am going out of fb for good. I gave (I think reasonable) 72 hours and some people did reach out and most congratulated me. Which means a lot of people want it, they get its bad for them but "everybody is there" is the main argument. I don't try to convince them, I just tell them where they can find me. Tonight I am out for good.
Maybe I am sort of fresh in the workforce (3 yrs) but I just don't allow this - if I am not in the office I don't work. I don't have slack on my phone or whatever and I have strict boundaries working 9-5. Does it become worse when I have more exp?
Few nitpicks and more of showing off how much I care and love what you've done:
* polygon is antialiasing - it shouldn't * rubber cursor is wrong * circle and rounded rectangle tools are filling their insides when they shouldn't * Text works in zoom mode - it didn't used to (not sure if bug or feature) * Color picker is way too modern :D
But man, even stretch/skew are implemented, awesome job!
The same thing happened about a week ago with Fb Messenger (http://downdetector.com/status/facebook/news/53463-problems-...).
I expect this level of outages in 2016 to be only caused by solar flares, am I missing something?
I've been hearing these complaints for years now, I don't buy it. It's a problem, solve it. Start from here - everyone has a digital signature or certificate or another mumbo-math-jumbo, the system for collecting votes is open source. You have an account at the web service and you can see that your vote has been cast for that candidate that you wished, so who watches the watchers - everybody. Pick two authorities - one counts votes, other distribute keys. One gets a summary of votes only, the other has the mapping of key-person.
Sure there are problems. But it sounds to me like laziness and lame excuses.
Hackathons come in many flavors - some are trying to mock a startup environment, some are sponsored by big corps who look for PR, some are trying to find vulns in software. But at their core, they should be looked at a chance to just gather with like-minded people, exchange ideas, give a stab at an interesting challenge, win a trophy and move on. And a company that hires a person based on flashy trophies from basketball courts down the street, probably needs to rethink some of its values.
