physicsyogi··on Ask HN: What city would you move to for software/startup scene outside of SF?
Vancouver
physicsyogi··on Elon Musk's layoff letter to Tesla employees
Same here, except it was my uncle. He worked at the plant in Nevada. I remember speaking to him a few days before the firings and he said Elon Musk was coming to the factory and that was not a good sign. Next thing he knew lots of people were summarily fired.
physicsyogi··on What Kagglers Are Using for Text Classification
I’ve found that some CNNs consistently beat fasttext in terms of model quality. But I’ve beaten those CNNs and fasttext by doing transfer learning with ULMFit and fasts I. But if we’re talking training speed, fasttext is indeed aptly named.
physicsyogi··on Antitrust, the App Store, and Apple
> You can't sideload an app on an iOS device, you can't run unsigned apps, and there is no version of iOS you can run without the App Store. Unless you jailbreak.

This is not quite true. If you write your own app you can install it on your iOS device. If someone put an iOS app on, say, Github, you could easily install it. No need for the App Store or Apple's review process. An app does not need to be signed unless you want to submit it to the App Store. Also, you can install iOS without using the App Store if you have a developer account.

I'm not disagreeing with you that iOS is far less open than Android.

physicsyogi··on Apple Used to Be an Inventor. Now It’s Mainly a Landlord
I think GP's instructions work only on Face ID devices.
physicsyogi··on An AI Lie Detector Is Going to Start Questioning Travelers in the EU
There's a sci-fi novel called _The Truth Machine_ that looks at what happens in a society when a perfect lie detector is introduced.
physicsyogi··on A Look at the Design of Lua
I used Lua's C API a couple of years ago to write some lightweight JNI code to use Torch from Java. The API documentation was so clear that it was relatively easy to write. Since the API is stack-based the project ended up being a good learning experience. The only thing that was a little annoying was needing a few if/else statements to return the desired type.
physicsyogi··on In a new study, those who ate more organic food had fewer cancer diagnoses
The paper's abstract suggests it was not:

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullar...

>> Design, Setting, and Participants In this population-based prospective cohort study among French adult volunteers, data were included from participants with available information on organic food consumption frequency and dietary intake. For 16 products, participants reported their consumption frequency of labeled organic foods (never, occasionally, or most of the time).

physicsyogi··on An Amateur Rap Crew Stole Surveillance Tech that Tracks Almost Every American

physicsyogi··on Pundi X Debuts New Decentralized Mobile OS and Device
This phone sounds interesting. It also reminds me of the Pied Piper platform from the Silicon Valley show.
physicsyogi··on Notation as a Tool of Thought (1979)

physicsyogi··on A Year in Clojure
The only example of a Clojure team migrating to Haskell is the Duckling team, a little while after Facebook acquired them. Among other things, they wanted a language with better support within Facebook.

physicsyogi··on A Penthouse Made for Instagram
The penthouse in question reminds me of how houses are staged. It looks sterile and as the article says, "free from the clutter of everyday life".
physicsyogi··on A Machine Learning cheatsheet focusing on the most popular algorithms
"Centuries" is a bit of a stretch, right? Or am I misunderstanding your comment?

Some of the most widely used algorithms in machine learning, for training or prediction, are much younger than that: - backpropagation (1970s) - Viterbi algorithm (1960s) - Markov Chain Monte Carlo (1940s) (Though, the Buffon's needle problem is from the 18th century.)

And things like conditional random fields, LDA, and LSTMs, were introduced after 2000.

edit: removed lone parenthesis

physicsyogi··on We Discovered Helium 150 Years Ago. Are We Running Out?
There's also the isotope Helium-3, which is far more scarce than Helium-4 and is rapidly running out. It's used to detect radiation and to reach ultralow temperatures in low-temperature physics research and medical cryogenics. It's scarcity has been a national security concern.
physicsyogi··on New data on college majors confirms old trend: technocracy is crushing humanism
Wharton is at UPenn. Penn State's business school is Smeal.
physicsyogi··on Ask HN: What are the best Sci-Fi books you've ever read?
Cryptonomicon and Snow Crash were great. Others you might:

- The Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang (superb short story that Arrival was based on) - The Three Body-Problem (Cixin Liu) - Dune (Frank Herbert) - The Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler) - Lucifer's Hammer (Larry Niven) - The Kundalini Equation (Steven Barnes)

physicsyogi··on Backpropagation algorithm visual explanation
I generally prefer to see neural networks depicted so that the input is on the left and the output is on the right. This is probably because I think of time on an axis as flowing left to right.
physicsyogi··on Apple needs to tackle the issue of smartphone addiction
They're calling it "text neck". https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/11/2...

physicsyogi··on Git for structured data? really?
> The goal of this project is to build a functional database.

> neon is a persistent set storing quads ie. 4-tuples made of:

> (graph, subject, predicate, object)

Sounds interesting. And reminds me of Datomic.

physicsyogi··on Ask HN: Best language for general AI programming?
Clojure has Flare[1] and Cortex[2] for machine learning. Clojure is also a great language for data processing.

Python, of course, gives you access to a host of useful libraries for NLP (SpaCy[3], NLTK, Textacy), machine learning (Scikit-learn, PyTorch, Tensorflow), and more general data processing (Pandas) and visualization (Matplotlib, Seaborn).

physicsyogi··on Norvig's Python programs to practice or demonstrate skills
There's a nice Jupyter kernel for Clojure: https://github.com/didiercrunch/lein-jupyter.
physicsyogi··on What Is a Computational Essay?
This is like Jupyter Notebooks for Mathematica.
physicsyogi··on Uber's Employee Ratings Put Women at a Disadvantage, Suit Says
Microsoft used stack ranking for some time and from what I've read it caused a lot of problems and was considered to be negative overall. It led to a cutthroat environment where employees were competing with each other (and not focusing on doing their best work) so that they would get a good ranking [1]. According to reviews on Glassdoor, it's still used unofficially for their 6-month reviews [2]. Amazon also used it for a time [3] and has since abandoned it.

physicsyogi··on The end of the cloud is coming
>This is a problem mostly because of the way we’ve organized the web. There are many clients that want to get content and use programs and only a relatively few servers that have those programs and content. When someone posts a funny picture of a cat on Slack, even though I’m sitting next to 20 other people who want to look at that same picture, we all have to download it from the server where it’s hosted, and the server needs to send it 20 times.

The article reminds me of the Pied Piper platform from Silicon Valley, but especially the above quote.

physicsyogi··on What is backpropagation and what is it doing? [video]
I didn't know that Grapher was still around.
physicsyogi··on Alan Kay on Lisp
I’ve been using Clojure off and on for a few years but skipped learning about macros because I haven’t (yet) needed to write my own. Your comment makes me regret that decision.
