phusion··on Fastpotify
Took a very long time to get it to sign in and play on my local machine... we'll see if it's worth switching from the official client.
phusion··on Windows 95 released August 24, 1995
I was so excited to install this and finally be rid of Win 3.11. I was 13 or so when this came out and really just coming into my own with IT stuff, building PCs and whatnot. It was really mind blowing back then.
phusion··on Designing Windows 95’s User Interface (2018)
I think I was 11 or 12 when I first installed Win95, once I got some help, it was like a whole new world. Multimedia was finally a real possibility. Seeing Weezer in their "Buddy Holly" music video on the disc was pretty wild, and the "Start Me Up" spoof song about win95 "this windows ninety fiiiiiive, it's suckin' up my driiiive". Good times.
phusion··on How the Dreamcast Copy Protection Was Defeated
I loved doing this on my Dreamcast back in '99. It was the first console I ever managed to "mod" -- even though it's completely a software mod.

At first we had to download loader discs, just a few hundred Kb on a disc, then pop in the 1:1 burned game. Eventually they managed to put the loader on the game ISOs and you could just burn a game and pop it in. Plenty of fun, lots of great games and it primed me to eventually crack open my Xbox for the 007 Nightfire exploit.

phusion··on Diablo devolved – magic behind the 1996 computer game
Yeah, the day I bought the game, along with my best friend and PC gaming buddy, after playing for hours, we stayed up really late as I read the manual aloud. Ahh memories.
phusion··on Diablo devolved – magic behind the 1996 computer game
What a fantastic bunch of games those were, right? We eventually had such a blast playing Descent: Freespace at LAN's.. great game.. anyway.. the Descent devs are at it again!

phusion··on Feds: There are hostile stingrays in DC, but we don’t know how to find them
It MAY not be that easy... femtocells and whatnot may make that a difficult task. I wondered this myself, since nearly all pirate radio stations are caught.. but cell sites don't work the same way. Just a thought.
phusion··on Adrian Lamo has died
Seriously, I'm really surprised at some of the comments here. Some hackers have always been suits though, so I shouldn't be surprised.
phusion··on Adrian Lamo has died
Chelsea is Bradley, she's trans.
phusion··on Adrian Lamo has died
here's a documentary featuring Adrian prominently. This is the best you'll see Adrian, because some time after this film he went on (or off?) his meds, betrayed Chelsea Manning and various other things shitty humans do.

phusion··on Venmo can now instantly transfer money to your debit card for 25 cents
Despite all the negativity, as a filthy degenerate, I missed the previous ability to get a Paypal debit card and instantly withdrawal money sent to my PP acct with it. This should be useful..
phusion··on The story behind the default Windows XP desktop background
Nice, I grew up in Sonoma county, definitely looks like home. More so the area to the right that's almost cropped out, but still.. nice to know that winxp's iconic background is of home. Wish I knew that back in '01 when it was the talk of the town.
phusion··on Show HN: Summaread – Millions of Articles Summarized Daily
This is AWESOME! Thank you! I'm a giant news junkie, while I work in IT and like/need to stay abreast of whats going on, I also used to work for an online gaming publication. Checking news sites is just wired into my everyday routine.. and it's nice to have these stories aggregated in one place so I don't have the big splashy front pages on my screen at work :) Thanks again!
phusion··on Show HN: Kooba, an interactive graph for finding new books
Same... typed in a book title in a couple different browsers, just the red dots appear :/
phusion··on Show HN: Gopher Browser for Windows Client
Oh man, I don't think I have much/any use for this today, but my first internet experience was on Gopher. They had it set up on what I'm assuming were some kind of *nix machines at the local library. I would search for comic book related material and generally "surf" around when my mother would drive me down there. Fortunately the Internet went public in '97, my jr high school had several networked computers, eventually all on the Internet blah blah netscape.
phusion··on Why I Stopped Using Multiple Monitors
Good, I'm not the only one who thought this article was completely ridiculous.
phusion··on Famous Russian hacker Kris Kaspersky passed away
Yeah, first response was "oh, Putin didn't like something they did and he 'died' "
phusion··on The Making Of “Homer At The Bat,” The Episode That Conquered Prime Time (2012)
I love these old write ups on classic Simpsons episodes. The first 7-8 seasons or so are pure magic and we'll miss John Swartzwelder always.
phusion··on Streama – A self-hosted streaming application with your own media library
It is really great, I have it running on two cheapo linux VMs as well as my gaming box back home. It's great to be able to watch on my phone, iPad, netbook, laptop, desktop etc and the Fix Incorrect Match feature works just fine.. I don't even create the Season XX folders, just /media/TV/ShowName/Filename.SxxExx.mkv{or whatever} and most multi-worded series dont match correctly by themselves, editing it once and putting spaces in works 95% of the time.
phusion··on Show HN: An audio only social network
After discovering Discord and having a large group of Facebook friends who are on the other side of the country or out of the country, I'm intrigued... but that could just be the intriginol I took this morning.
phusion··on Irssi 1.0.0 Released
BitchX isn't that hard, it's got all the ircII stuff plus a few changes to how you do a few things. I used graphical IRC clients for years until I started working more and switched around devices too much. I'm not a fan of ZNC/BNC, so now I have a few VPS's for plex and storage that I just have irssi running inside of a screen and it works great.

I stopped using BX after a few IRC friends badgered me into switching to irssi and I haven't looked back. I'm on IRC every day and the VPS -> screen -> irssi config has worked for years, so I'm sticking to it.

phusion··on Pornhub Bypasses Ad Blockers with WebSockets
Ahhh "Middle Men" -- if you weren't thinking of that movie with this comment, I must suggest that everyone watch it. It's about (Hollywoodified) the two guys who created credit card processing over the Internet-- according to the movie, parts of their system are still in use today.
phusion··on George Hotz cancels his Tesla Autopilot-like ‘comma one’
Did he delete all of his tweets? Just found his verified account and it's empty.
phusion··on Not One New York Police Officer Has a Body Camera
I was so excited when police body cameras became a thing. I figured that some kind of beureucratic oversight would stop most, if not all funny business-- BOY WAS I WRONG!! They 'accidentally' turn them off, don't bother wearing them or don't give the public access to the footage.

These cameras are completely worthless until they start working for the public and not abused by corrupt police depts. All cops need to have these and they need to be uploaded to a third, impartial party at the end of the day, every day, or abuse will be commonplace. I guess I did read somewhere that police complaints dropped 97 (??) percent since the use of body cameras, but where? Certainly not nation wide.

phusion··on ITT Technical Institutes Shuts Down
Nice, I live in SR now and attended SRJC in '02-03 or so, but eventually made my way to their Petaluma campus for their CCNA program.
phusion··on “CPUs are optimized for video games”
I come from a small town, small enough to yell across and we're perfectly safe leaving our doors unlocked. Home invasions and break ins are unheard of entirely, in the last 30 years at least. Similar behavior in surrounding towns with slightly larger populations.
phusion··on Reddit is still in turmoil
When I used to visit the Yelp offices in SF, and a few other high profile tech outfits, they had kegs in the office.
phusion··on Happy 20th Birthday, Quake
I was a little late to the game and didn't get a 3d card until Quake 2 was out and had been patched a few times. I bought a Diamond Monster 3d (add on card), plugged it in, installed the drivers and loaded up Quake 2... no difference. After being frustrated, I finally found that I had to enable the OpenGL driver/mode and the console screen dropped, then revealed those rockets flying down the hallways in glorious, well lit 3d! I played for hours before finally going to bed, that was truly amazing.

I eventually got GLQuake and did the same for Quake 1, it was so exciting!

phusion··on FBI raids dental software researcher who discovered patient data on FTP server
This is so wrong, but it's not surprising. We've been reading stories for years of security researchers being charged with a crime or harassed for simply pointing out blatant security holes.

What kind of thinking is this? He was doing them a favor. Every time, it seems to me that they are embarrassed by the incident and lash out. WHY!?? We should be treating these researchers like heroes, not kicking in their doors and having the FBI charge them with criminal CFAA violations. Once the chilling effect comes down in full force, we'll have a much less secure Internet.

phusion··on Help save 17 years of PC game modding history
I worked in Filefront's news department for almost two years, worked closely with the file guys and had a small staff under me. I hope they save everything, lots of oldschool mods and whatnot on there. I remember when we covered E3, we got a video of Gary Coleman, someone asked him to say "Hi Filefront!" and he just said "What's filefront..." LOL.. ahh good times.
