phowat··on WSL 2 is getting faster Windows file system access
Tangentially , I was a heavy used of wsl and moved to linux a few months ago and LLMs made most of the downsides of using linux as a desktop go away for me. I chatted with claude about the migration to find the best distro, decided on Fedora. After the install I asked everything I wanted to configured and got straight answers. In 3 or 4 hours I had an even more comfortable experience than I had on windows. AI made the annoying parts of trying to figure out how to edit all the config files to have linux behave the way you want very easy. I also had claude code write a bunch of scripts that I could have done but would probably never bring myself to actually do it . WHen you have a coding agent readily available , having an open source desktop environment makes a lot more sense. I encourage everyone to try it.

Since this is HN let's be factually correct. Almond production is irrelevant in water usage. The bulk of it is going to animal agriculture.
phowat··on Bus travel from Lima to Rio de Janeiro
There is also "leito-cama" which is the top category, one above "leito".
phowat··on Runners who churn butter on their runs
Regardless of the vegan part the point still stands. It was also my first though reading the article before I came here to read the comments.
phowat··on An informational website about why I went to prison
Yeah, I never actually used or shared/sold any of it since it was mostly a game for me. But nowadays I understand it is a very bad idea even just to store this kind of stuff.
phowat··on An informational website about why I went to prison
I don't know how old OP is but I did a lot of dumb stuff on the internet 25+ years ago when I was a teenager. Including writing viruses and stealing credit card information. I'm glad things were a lot different back then.
phowat··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
Frankly I think it's a lost cause and sadly doesn't make sense to waste energy on it anymore. I eventually abandoned my de-googled phone exactly because I couldn't use my bank with it.
phowat··on Plain – a web framework for building products with Python
I really don't understand why every time a big project is forked People are so upset. IMO, one of the great things about open source software is that a fork is possible. Maybe it will go nowhere, maybe some good ideas will be fed back to Django, maybe it will become the new standard. Most of the time , we will end up with better software overall.
phowat··on Show HN: Seven39, a social media app that is only open for 3 hours every evening
What about using vpns to connect through different timezones ?
phowat··on Who killed the rave?
100% agree. The article does not seem to be written by someonene who is particularly interested in this subject. The fact that it starts talking about what is IMO the most overrated scene ever, Berlin, says a lot.
phowat··on Meta's Hack (HHVM) language appears to be no longer maintained
I don't think this was used much outside of meta anyway.
phowat··on Comma.ai: Refactoring for Growth
Exactly! And I would expect hacker news of all places to understand that.
phowat··on Ask HN: Do you already see the impact of LLMs on the job prospects for dev's?
Also when you wear multiple hats. Recently I had to setup an OpenResty including writing some fairly complex Lua scripts, both which I had never touched before, and it was much faster with the help of an llm.
phowat··on The Ruin of Mumbai
I 100% clicked the link expecting an article about how the open source PBX software Asterisk was being used in some nefarious way.
phowat··on Nokia made too many phones
I remember it also had native SIP support and you could configure an account to connect automatically only when the phone connected to a certain wifi network. So I had my work extension on when I connected to the work wifi. It was really nice
phowat··on Hidden Changes in GPT-4, Uncovered
Because we're aiming for AGI
phowat··on Maestro: A Linux-compatible kernel in Rust
The point is someone decided to write it and here it is.
phowat··on How big is YouTube?
63 is such an oddly specific number too.
phowat··on Ex-owners of sex work site Backpage convicted of prostitution scheme
Sure! Why not outlaw adultery then ? Let's even stone them to death!
phowat··on After OpenAI's blowup, it seems pretty clear that 'AI safety' isn't a real thing
One thing I noticed recently and was able to reproduce a bunch of times is asking dall-e the exact same prompt where the only difference is the subject being described as a male or female and it refuses to generate the female one. I don't know what to think of it but it's weird.
phowat··on Binance and CEO admit financial crimes, billions coughed up to US govt
We most certainly do get to choose if we want to. Why not ?
phowat··on OpenAI Boardroom Battle: Safety First
"AI safety" is just a rehashed version of "think of the children".
phowat··on Drought in Brazil's Amazon reveals ancient engravings
Honest question as I have no horse on this race (pun intended) and you picqued my curiosity. How the hell can the pre existence of horses be politicized?
phowat··on Ask HN: When LLMs make stuff up, call it 'confabulating', not 'hallucinating'
I just searched for "ai hallucination" on arxiv and got 43 hits. And terms get reused in new contexts all the time. I don't disagree confabulating would be a more correct term, though.
phowat··on Ask HN: When LLMs make stuff up, call it 'confabulating', not 'hallucinating'
Why change something that is already a well defined term in the context of generative AIs ?
phowat··on Google.com tests a news-filled homepage, just like Bing and Yahoo
Things have changed a LOT . The vast majority of Google users never even see the home page since it's integrated into the address bar of all mainstream browsers. So I guess they might as well use it for something other than pure search.
phowat··on Stop EU Chat Control
Why not just write "porn" ? Is there some sort of filter here on hn I'm not aware of ?
phowat··on Ask HN: Is GenAI heading for a crypto-esque bubble pop?
Can you expand on why do you think langchain is so useless ? I'm quite happy using it for development.
phowat··on Some Pixel owners still can't dial 911 during an emergency
The article explains how to schedule a test call to 911.
phowat··on Linux interop is maturing fast thanks to a games console
I don't know. Developing on Windows 11 + wsl has been a suprisingly good dx for me. Much better than my previous MacOS experience. I understand developers who stay in the Apple ecosystem due to the unbeatable laptop hardware in the macbooks, but software wise most of them would be surprised with the current state on the windows side.
