photonwins··on Inside Uber’s Aggressive, Unrestrained Workplace Culture
Brilliant movie, holds a mirror to our faces (because we ARE part of the system that failed those kids).
photonwins··on Uber Taps Eric Holder to Investigate Discrimination Claims
I am not aware of how the system works, but shouldn't authorities voluntarily (don't know the legal term) investigate this case even though there is no official complaint? There is victim's statement out in the open right?
photonwins··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
I have one of this and you will have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.
photonwins··on One month after launch
Sure will do :)
photonwins··on One month after launch
Subscribed, not sure how useful this is going to be for me, but will send a few bucks your way nonetheless.
photonwins··on GitLab’s Secret to Managing Employees in 160 Locations: Write Everything Down
Kudos to the entire team, as another commenter said, please don't be discouraged by the petty comments. It takes balls to admit mistakes in public. You have earned many people's respect.
photonwins··on In Its Third Month, India’s Cash Shortage Begins to Bite
And this happened just yesterday, politician's house raided by income tax officials.

10 crore = 1.47 million USD

EDIT: Corrected the conversion.

photonwins··on In Its Third Month, India’s Cash Shortage Begins to Bite
You are right, I didn't read the link you posted because the moment I noticed livemint, I kind of jumped to respond (possibly due to my past experience with the articles on their website). However my point still holds, if RBI is not releasing the data how are these Bloomberg or any other entity getting their numbers? I went through RBI's press release for December 2016 and didn't find anything stating the $220 billion deposits (as claimed by bloomberg).

PS: I am not trying to argue for the sake of arguing, I really would like to know the numbers to apprise myself.

photonwins··on In Its Third Month, India’s Cash Shortage Begins to Bite
I see, livemint's reputation for reporting facts is as dubious as nytimes. I say this because, livemint is owned by HT Media whose chairperson was a congress Rajyasabha (Upperhouse) MP.

I would rather have some trust in the official RBI's figures, because they are accountable unlike some website.

wrt #1 where are you getting those numbers from? Can you cite the source?
photonwins··on Screwdriver: Yahoo's Continuous Delivery Build System for Dynamic Infrastructure
Agreed, but I don't see an option to update/edit the title. Do I need to have more karma points for that?
photonwins··on High-speed Wi-Fi rolls into 100th railway station in India
The new railway minister has been working relentlessly on improving the situation, we are already seeing a huge improvement. Trains are being run on time, it is a huge problem that doesn't go away overnight. I am willing to give the current government more time if they can stay the current course they are on.

Also, it would be nicer if you keep yourself updated on the latest development on the subject you are going to comment on. RM's twitter handle is a good place to start.

photonwins··on Can jet engines clean up Delhi's air?
There is no silver bullet, govt is probably trying a multi thronged approach to address the problem. A Solar power plant is being built in Rajastan, Western India[0], one more in neighbouring Gujarat [1] & one more just got completed in South India [2], and there are nuclear power plants being built or in the initial design phase. These things take time, but there needs to be some interim solutions as well. Don't you think?

photonwins··on India is displaying classic signs that foreshadow fascism
Is it possible that the quoted news site has its own agenda? India as a country is so diverse, within each state we have different dialects/languages, food habits. <s>If someone can pull off a fascist stunt in a country like India, he must be really good </s>

I am actually laughing at the article and many of the comments here.

photonwins··on Cash Ban the Best Thing to Happen to Indian Digital Payments
People can still use lower denomination notes you know.
photonwins··on Cash Ban the Best Thing to Happen to Indian Digital Payments
Can you provide some reasons as to why you think this is a horrible news?
photonwins··on Epic Games chief pays $15M to protect 7,000 acres of North Carolina wilderness
You don't have to be rich to do this.

photonwins··on Plasma Mobile – Turns your phone into a fully open hacking device
The best mobile computer I have ever used, I kicked myself when I dropped it on the floor and the screen broke. I ordered a compatible screen from ebay and changed it myself. It was so much fun opening up a terminal and ssh'ing into my workstation. Then Nokia had to go out of the way to ruin it for me.
photonwins··on The Ops Identity Crisis
And blatant disregard for performance analysis & capacity planning. Application is slowing down at 5000 QPS? Let's upgrade to 64 core 128GB Server and while we are at it, let's throw in a bunch of SSDs too. </s>
photonwins··on India set to start massive project to divert Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers
I am sure there is a perfect recipe book for solving fresh water problem for millions of people and animals that India is not following.

photonwins··on SpaceX Launch Livestream: CRS-8 Dragon Hosted Webcast
Sensors, control systems, software, hardware and of course the weather. So many things can wrong despite your best efforts. Just think about it, the entire rocket goes through multiple cycles of extreme temperature/pressure variations in a very short span, the different materials used in the vehicle expand and contract at different magnitudes. You have got to get your calculations absolutely right. It is mind boggling to even think about it. Kudos to all the Engineers, Scientists and the support staff for pulling off such a feat. I feel lucky to be able to witness history in the making.
photonwins··on Oracle seeks $9.3B for Google’s use of Java in Android
"most" or "some"?
photonwins··on Dropbox’s Exodus from the Amazon Cloud
I am curious to know, with so many disks densely packed in a 4U configuration, I am guessing there is definitely increased heat generation and not to mention vibration. How do you handle these? Also, does it have any effect on MTBF?
photonwins··on Chicago Police Hid Mics, Destroyed Dashcams to Block Audio, Records Show
I grew up in an Asian country where I have seen police corruption first hand more than once and I always wished my country had better educated and morally strong individuals who would protect the weaker sections of the society instead of siding with rich/powerful people even if they are criminals.

I always wished like in the west police would enforce the law regardless of the status of that individual and that police and other govt officials are better paid and hence there was no need for them to get corrupted for the sake few extra bucks.

I am currently working in one of those "developed" countries in the west and observing things around me, reading articles/comments like here. It appears that, it is not really very different here either. I guess human greed is universal.
