phoronixrly··on Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D scan verdict
Have you ever read this? https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2019/1024/oj/eng

I hope La Quadrature and company appeal this refusal to the EU.

Also even without the context above, a museum preventing people from experiencing and studying items from its collection (since the point clouds were apparently ruled such) is enough of a grounds for activist action against them.

phoronixrly··on Suits Are Better Tech Than Modern Clothes
While at it, don't forget to put on your fedoras.
phoronixrly··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
And it threatens not a single profession, but all people doing intellectual work.
phoronixrly··on How our vibe coded website looks like a designer made it
And it still carries some of the cliche features of LLM-'designed' sites.
phoronixrly··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
Are you crazy? libadwaita looks way, way more polished and consistent than anything I've seen on macos for the last at least 5 years. And only one of these is an open-source project with a limited budget.
phoronixrly··on When did Google get so weird?
Yeah, good luck getting me to be a good little source of information for LLM companies to profit from.
phoronixrly··on Was silent reading unusual during Augustine's time?
I'm sorry, are you reading more because LLMs are doing your job in the meantime or are you reading more because you're mostly reading LLM output day to day now?
phoronixrly··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
If you are referring to banking apps, I just don't use banking apps that don't work on my degoogled phone thus granting them the low fraud risk they so strive for with forcing locked devices.
phoronixrly··on HomelabFest will be in St. Louis in September 2027
The guy has an obvious conflict of interest - running a youtube channel/taking sponsorships. I've never undestood why so many people take his word at face value. It's at best attempts to manufacture hype for views and at worst shilling for whoever gave him money to shill for them (i.e. qualcomm buying arduino is good actually)
phoronixrly··on Alberta's image as world's only rat-free region shattered by discovery of rat
Agreed from my observations as well. Animals like rats, pidgeons, gulls need food. In urban environments this means trash. Live in a society that keeps its environment free of trash (including properly kept landfills) and pests will be significantly less.
phoronixrly··on August 27 TCRF DDoS Attack Postmortem
There's a person who decided to ban bot traffic from their own site, and there's a person who committed a felony in response. Definitely a 'both sides' situation according to HN comments.
phoronixrly··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
I sure as hell am never again releasing human-authored open-source in a way that can be scraped. My Github is now relegated to the lowest quality slop from the cheapest models.
phoronixrly··on Claude's Load-Bearing Seams
Oh I am doing it on purpose lately here in HN, and it's hella hard to sound as dumb, repetitive and cliche as Claude.
phoronixrly··on What to do when your Waymo holds up a Secret Service motorcade
I can agree that cars should not exist. I cannot agree that cars that already exist and sadly emburden cities with their presence should not just stop and safely wait for the resolution of a road situation.
phoronixrly··on What to do when your Waymo holds up a Secret Service motorcade
As opposed to what?... Floor it? Just stopping is the safe default* that should be practiced by more human drivers, too.

*) In the general case especially within cities. There are exceptions - for example on roads with high speed limit like euro highways, where stopping for non-emergency reasons is banned anyway.

phoronixrly··on Comma's hands-off driving tech under investigation after 2 fatal crashes
> even if machines are still worse than humans (they aren't)

As I said this is still a subject of research. This statement has a source of 'trust me bro'.

> Imo we should allow (and then enforce) self driving even if machines are still worse than humans

How about we do that after a drastic reduction of car use? How about we do that after car manufacturers start taking responsibility about road deaths caused by their 'self-driving' software, and hardware corner cuts?

phoronixrly··on Comma's hands-off driving tech under investigation after 2 fatal crashes
This goes to show that any car, be it internal combustion, electric, manually operated or self-driving is still a car, and thus is still capable of inflicting death (among other negatives). The difference is still just in the frequency of deaths (and with self-driving this is still under debate).

Good.
phoronixrly··on Heretic removes restrictions from language models
Can the load-bearing gaps that are worth being flagged for pinning down be abliterated out of a model?
phoronixrly··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
> if you didn't know ahead of time they were AI-generated

You can't be serious... Are we looking at the same posters?

phoronixrly··on North Korean nuclear test sets off years of earthquakes
Who said anything about engineering... Do it the American way -- mine the entire fault with nukes, set them off simultaneously, broadcast the entire thing live and sell ad time!
phoronixrly··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
I still do open-source. You just get the code on a CD like the good old times!
phoronixrly··on EU Floats Canada Becoming the Bloc's First 'Associate Member'

phoronixrly··on EU Floats Canada Becoming the Bloc's First 'Associate Member'
LMAO, right, just as representative!

Get this Brexit-era disinfo off my screen...

phoronixrly··on EU Floats Canada Becoming the Bloc's First 'Associate Member'
You keep spreading this, but the eurocommssion president gets appointed by the European Council, which consists of democratically elected heads of state.

She is no less democratically elected than the prime minister of a parliamentary republic... They get appointed by the democratically elected parliament.

phoronixrly··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
No, it's necessary only when the alternative is to mutilate the print edition...
phoronixrly··on V1.1 state of open source- OS 4.4 months behind frontier [pdf]
Thank you, I won't even bother opening TFA.

Calling out LLM-generated text seems not to be welcome here. Last time I dared say an article was unreadable because of the amount of slop poured into it, I was accused that '[I have] the usual "big words hard" mindset of people who aren't used to reading well-written prose'. I am never again pointing LLM-generated texts out.

phoronixrly··on Waymo pulls over, calls cops on juvenile riders who had 'ghost gun"
I was going to say that this is the only surveillance that I would be OK with, considering the users are not on public property. However, I hadn't considered that calling the police on anyone in the US (especially for carrying a firearm) does not carry the same consequences as elsewhere...
