phob··on Do I Really Need a Programming Language?
Often when using C++ I find myself solving C++ problems, not real problems. In a domain with very difficult math and performance challenges, the C++ problems will be dwarfed by the difficultly of the real problem you are solving.

For domains outside of physics and applied math, I think the dominating factor is often the inherent trickiness of writing correct procedural code vs. the ease of writing strongly typed functional code.

Vim and Emacs seem to work fine if you have Gnu's win32 tools.

What advantage does this have over flot?

phob··on "No matter what price we choose, we always make the same revenue"
At the lower price, you produce a lot more consumer surplus. This is valuable if you're the charitable type.

This class looks really intense. I'm so excited for this -- just look at that syllabus!
phob··on New MacBook Pro series
The problem with anecdotal evidence is that it makes you under the impression that you know something. If it were as harmless as it were useless, there would be no problem.

"4HWW is about identifying the highest impact things and cutting out the rest."

This is one of the primary aims of GTD.

phob··on Could It Be? Spooky Experiments That 'See' The Future
But we do have reasonable priors on parapsychology from its wasteland of unreplicated, flawed studies, with no convincing results despite decades of effort.
phob··on Could It Be? Spooky Experiments That 'See' The Future
This is why we replicate studies. Unreplicated parapsychology results are a dime a dozen.

phob··on Life Hack - The 30/30 Minute Work Cycle Feels Like Magic
It's pretty awesome. I have it set up to lock my computer without any way (besides going to the tty screens) to unlock it... Any other way and I end up postponing the breaks and not taking them.
phob··on Fun with Clojure: Turning Cats into Dogs in Hanoi
Saying that two groups are homomorphic doesn't tell me much more than there exists a group homomorphism... As far as I know, isomorphism implies one can be transformed into the other through renaming.

I don't know anything about topology, so I'll take your word for it.

phob··on Why Apple can’t beat Android
To play devil's advocate, a single open platform like Android would leave plenty of room for competition.

Yep, that's good 'ol vim for you.

phob··on Ask HN: Best cross-platform code editor?
I completely agree with you, except that I value customization higher than you do, so I choose emacs.

Have you considered VIPER mode for emacs? I know it's not complete VI emulation but it's pretty close. If I was to start again (with no muscle memory built up) that is absolutely the way I would go.

phob··on Land of Lisp is finally out...and has a music video.
Actually, this could be done if the program didn't use any print or input commands. In general, it still cannot be done.

phob··on You're a Bad Programmer. Embrace It.
That's called progress.
phob··on Ask HN: What habits made you a better programmer?
Are you a colemak or dvorak user?

I agree with you on all of those items. It's a little scary, actually.
