phlipski··on So you want to build an embedded Linux system?
If you're looking to build a product using an embedded linux system you're better off just using an off the shelf SOM from an embedded board vendor like Toradex or Phytec (to name 2 - there are dozens out there). There are some quasi standards around compute modules now like SMARC and SODIMM where the vendors build little pcb's that contain the SOC, DRAM, PMIC and optional EMMC and WIFI. Then you just built a carrier board to breakout the IO like USB, UART, HDMI, MIPI DSI/CSI-2, etc.... The design/layout/validation of the SOC/PMIC/DRAM is the hardest part and unless you're shipping in volumes > 100ku annually you're probably better off outsourcing the SOM.

If you're just looking to learn then by all means give it a shot! Jay's article is a great primer in the basics but just know that all of those parts are pretty slow/old by today's standards. That article is 4 years old and even 4 years ago those parts were fairly slow/cheap/low-power/low-pincount relative to the SOT at the time.

phlipski··on So you want to build an embedded Linux system?
The Toradex's, Phytec's, Boundary Devices, etc... of the world all do a decent job with their BSP's but just know that they pull from NXP's mainline BSP release so there is a lag in time from when NXP makes a new release. Sometimes they'll fork their own libraries which I've seen cause some problems with application level software from NXP.
phlipski··on Show HN: Foosbar – My autonomous foosball-playing robot
I haven't been wowed by a demo like that in years. That was awesome!!!
phlipski··on BeagleY-AI: a 4 TOPS-capable $70 board from Beagleboard
MLCommons provides MLPerf which is a series of benchmarks anyone can run and compare results. For devices like the BeagleY-AI the "edge" category provides a series of various benchmarks to run covering things like object detection, speech recognition, and now smaller LLM's.

phlipski··on BeagleY-AI: a 4 TOPS-capable $70 board from Beagleboard
Keep in mind that once you've prototyped a product on the BeagleY-AI board - you can actually BUY the TI AM62A74 chips in volume for ~ $25. Good luck sourcing the SoC on that Jetson Orin Nano board...
phlipski··on Physical Intelligence is building a brain for robots
So maybe we should start with building a "pinball wizard". A "deaf, dumb, blind" system that plays by sense of touch - or in this case some accelerometers and pressure transducers? radically reduced bandwidth inputs...
phlipski··on World War II 'rumor clinics' helped America battle wild gossip

phlipski··on Losing two jobs in one year
YOU (in the non-personal sense) may make your job an important part of your identity. But I would ask you to ask yourself the following questions - "What do your close friends do for a living? Does what they do for a living matter to YOU? Does what they do for a living in any way affect your relationship?"

I ask this as a thought experiment because I personally believe that we THINK people care about our jobs more than they really do. True friendship should (and does) transcend "jobs".

Maybe I'm an outlier - but I believe most folks just want to have a good time with their friends - specific careers be damned!

phlipski··on The dating app paradox
Just because I'm married with kids doesn't mean I've stopped noticing/appreciating beautiful people.
phlipski··on The dating app paradox
Married with 3 kids here. If was single today I'd be at the local rock gyms 24/7. I took my kids climbing a few weeks ago and I couldn't believe how many women were in that place. Roughly a 50/50 male/female ratio, and everyone is super fit. Yoga pants - chefs kiss. Easy to strike up conversations too when looking for help with a problem...
phlipski··on The dating app paradox
With all due respect here - "20 years of successful online dating" sounds like an oxymoron! Unless you're choosing to date and to not enter into a long term relationship?
phlipski··on Show HN: Atopile – Design circuit boards with code
First off - best of luck to y'all. The HW EDA space is sorely in need of tooling improvements. I'm curious as to how your product differs from JITX. They claim the same sort of thing - code based PCB development. And they've been around for a few years now.
phlipski··on TinyML: Ultra-low power machine learning
NXP's new MCX N94x and MCX N54x microcontrollers both have dual Cortex M33 cores and an integrated NPU. Eval boards should be available for purchase any day now.
phlipski··on All the Major Tech Layoffs in 2024 So Far
Order's from who? Certainly Musk re-platforming hate speech (and lies) in the form of Alex Jones and re-tweeting antisemitic posts had NOTHING to do with corporations wanting to flee right?
phlipski··on Reverse Engineering the TouchBar Screen and MIPI DSI Primer [video]
This is a great video! I wish it existed a few years ago when I struggled to find good information about the MIPI DSI, CSI-2 and D-PHY interfaces. That led me to write my own app-note - partly to teach myself but also to then teach others. You can find it here:

https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/application-note/AN13573.pdf

I used the same RT1170 EVK as shown in the video for my examples in the app-note.

phlipski··on The Hacker News Top books of 2023
Great list. I picked up "Introduction to Algorithms" by Thomas H. Cormen, Charles E. Leiserson, Ronald L. Rivest, Clifford Stein for the first time in 20 years since undergrad. Still a useful! The classics never die. I get a kick when I see "The Art of Electronics" and "The C Programming Language" still being recommended on the regular. Nice to see that my undergraduate education from 20+ years ago is still relevant! I think this also helps to underscore the idea that tech fads come and go, but the fundamentals never die.
phlipski··on Coral Dev Board Micro
Those i.MX RT parts are BEASTS!
phlipski··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Interesting results. Toyota at the top is no surprise. But Mini at #3?!?! WTF?? And Mercedes Benz second to last?!?! Porsche at 8 and Tesla at 14 are both surprising to me as well. But on thing to note about consumer reports methodology is they only poll consumers about the first year of ownership. Following for a longer time span (5 years?) would be better.
phlipski··on NASA's Voyager Team Focuses on Software Patch, Thrusters
"as OTA software patches"

Technically it's like 0.0001% OTA and 99.9999% OTVoS (Over The Void of Space).

phlipski··on Mojo is available for local download
With all due respect - scared of what? I'm genuinely curious what you're worried about. Can you give me some real world examples of a possible negative repercussion from signing up? I haven't signed up. I don't have an account, just been a curious lurker for the Mojo thing over the past couple of months.
phlipski··on A look into the finances of SpaceX

phlipski··on Network protocols for anyone who knows a programming language
Excellent little primer that clearly and simply explains basic networking!
phlipski··on Ask HN: How to deal with 0.1X programmer colleagues?
If you can convince them to sit upside down while they work then you can turn them into a 10x programmer. The inverse of 0.1 = 10!
phlipski··on To make more stingers, U.S. needs to revive production technology from scratch
The biggest challenge I see is the qualification process. If you want drop-in replacement electronics how do you guarantee that the functionality at the pin is an exact replacement for the original electronics?

phlipski··on Fastest Growing and Declining Industries from 2021-2031
Hard to imagine satellite and telecom tech will decline 21.6% but interesting list to ponder none the less.
phlipski··on Ask HN: Resources for older developers?
I was the youngest engineer (by quite a bit ~ 10 years) in my team for a good decade. Which in hindsight I probably should have left earlier than I did. But from that experience what I did notice is that there were two types of older engineers. Those that continued to WANT to learn new things and those that were intellectually lazy and essentially said, "We've never done that before." Well the intellectually lazy all got laid off over time. The guys who wanted to learn new things generally kept finding ways to stay relevant and add value to the organization. I think it's simple as just - never stop learning!
