phito··on Free software hasn't won
> I really don’t know how you’re going to change that.

Better education, which is definitely not the current trend.

phito··on Putting a dumb weather station on the internet
Cool project but I would just have used a zigbee/wifi weather station, they are just as cheap.
phito··on Show HN: Timelinize – Privately organize your own data from everywhere, locally
That's great, I've been running a timeline of my life in excel, I wonder if this could replace it.
phito··on What .NET 10 GC changes mean for developers
It works just fine out of the box. The articles/manuals are just if you want to really understand how it works and get the most out of it. What's the issue with that?
phito··on Unix philosophy and filesystem access makes Claude Code amazing
I would love to do this, but obviously the privacy concerns make it not worth it for me. And no, local LLMs are not an option for now.
phito··on Unix philosophy and filesystem access makes Claude Code amazing
Then it'll loop back again to CLI (or even direct system calls...) once human input won't be necessary anymore.
phito··on Unix philosophy and filesystem access makes Claude Code amazing
> Humans (or at least programmers) "build the tools to solve the problem" so intuitively and automatically

From my experience, only a few rare devs do this. Most will stick with (broken/wrong) GUI tools they know made by others, by convenience.

phito··on The history of cataract surgery
I thought the first picture of the article was an USB-C connector...
phito··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
Not to mention the risks of being on a list.
phito··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
Wouldn't be an autism thread without all the label gatekeepers
phito··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
Unless autism gives you an eating disorder, making it so you have absolutely no energy reserves cough cough
phito··on YAML document from hell (2023)
how is it annoying...? it's literally like that in almost every single language out there. IMO seeing unquoted strings in YAML feels weird.
phito··on $2 WeAct Display FS adds a 0.96-inch USB information display to your computer
You need to install an executable on your machine.
phito··on $2 WeAct Display FS adds a 0.96-inch USB information display to your computer
Yep it starts being really fun when you can go directly from an idea to making it, because you already have the components on hand from previous projects/hoarding.
phito··on Why your outdoorsy friend suddenly has a gummy bear power bank
Also I doubt that Haribo has special light battery technology. Seems more likely that they lied on the capacity... Article doesn't test the capacity
phito··on The bloat of edge-case first libraries
Yeah I'd say most people view it as such, until they hit (docker hub) rate limits.
phito··on The bloat of edge-case first libraries
I've only seen these kind of libraries in JavaScript. They are a direct result of poor language design.
phito··on Are touchscreens in cars dangerous?
Please no, I hate using any voice control, even if it works well. Sometimes, especially when I am alone, I do not want to speak.
phito··on If you are good at code review, you will be good at using AI agents
As a human, I do agree that it would be better and we should strive for that. However I don't think humans are really driving all this progress/innovation. It is just evolution keeping doing what it's always done, it is ruthless and does not care at all whether we are having fun or not.
phito··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
Great, I will look into that. Thank you!
phito··on If you are good at code review, you will be good at using AI agents
Because the goal of "AI" is not to have fun, it's to solve problems and increase productivity. I have fun programming too, but you have to realize the world isn't optimizing make things more fun.
phito··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
Could you please elaborate? I find this interesting as I'm building a k8s cluster and also have a bunch of RPIs laying around...
phito··on I’m Not a Robot
I did not select tomato.
phito··on The best YouTube downloaders, and how Google silenced the press
https://www.tubearchivist.com/

There's even a good Jellyfin integration

phito··on I’m Not a Robot
Fruits and berries are not vegetables. But potato man is :)
phito··on I’m Not a Robot
Really fun and creative! Currently stuck at 17 (draw a circle) because I'm using a laptop in a car :(
phito··on The health benefits of sunlight may outweigh the risk of skin cancer
> for a species that evolved in the sun, I do not believe one bit that sun exposure, which incidentally is linked to many benefits because it’s so bloody normal, is something that can only be dealt with modern technology and we should be deathly afraid of it. Sure, UV radiation can cause mutations, but our immune system has evolved over billions of years to deal with this exact problem.

Yeah, most of the time our immune system deals with it, but sometimes it misses one roge cell and you've got cancer. That's why you want to limit your exposure to mutations even if you're somewhat adapted to deal with them.

Then it's a matter of looking at studies and statistics and deciding for yourself. Personally, I'll keep putting on sunscreen, as I sunburn easily ;)

phito··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
Not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur
phito··on I ditched Docker for Podman
It's easy in theory. I'd say about 30% of my containers require root and just wouldn't work on Podman.
phito··on Finding thousands of exposed Ollama instances using Shodan
Any decent router is going to block connections from internet to your local network by default. For ollama to be accessible from the outside, they had to allow it explicitly. There's no way to blame ollama for this.
