philwelch··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
Right, my point is that if they were men raping four and eight year old boys, they may very well have been convicted of sodomy rather than child rape like they would in some Western countries.

The state law in Washington even had a similar issue. Bestiality was prohibited by the sodomy statute, which the state repealed in its entirety as a gay rights thing. After the Enumclaw incident the legislature scrambled to re-criminalize bestiality.

philwelch··on Why is Singapore no longer "cool"?
Many traditional cultures don’t really distinguish between homosexuality and pedarasty. That distinction, or at least the cultural recognition of a distinction, is largely a distinctive artifact of the sexual revolution, a western phenomenon.

We have a whole damn solar system we’re barely even using. Overpopulation is a fake bugbear of small minded bucket crabs.

It’s more generational-cohort-ism.

Singapore is small enough to kick the can down the road, but it’s still not sustainable to depend on immigration from other places that also have below replacement TFR
philwelch··on America has a tungsten problem
Nobody’s going to pay for a feasibility study in a regulatory climate with sufficient barriers to mining. Canada might have less of that thanks to its resource-extraction economy but it’s a huge problem in the US.

Just out of curiosity, what country manufactured the device you typed that comment on? There’s a lot of room for relations to get more hostile.

That’s never been the standard for riot control, but frankly I would be skeptical of anyone who was in the middle of a rioting mob who claimed they were minding their own business and playing candy crush on their phone.

philwelch··on CIA to Sunset the World Factbook
The thing is, there’s really no good way to check a lot of the numbers you see in sources like the World Factbook.

Take population estimates for instance. Much of the world either doesn’t have the state capacity or can’t be trusted to maintain accurate, publicly known population figures. There are some countries where they haven’t had a census in decades and their official population figures are entrusted to numbers provided by regional governments which receive national funding on a per capita basis. Every region has an incentive to inflate their population numbers and, in a system where they’re all competing for funding from the central government, this eventually becomes common practice. Even national governments have little incentive to share honest figures with the rest of the world, and national governments that aren’t even accountable to their own people like China and Russia are also well practiced in keeping secrets. And population is probably one of the easiest things to measure.

The problem is that some people just accept the first number they find and are militant about not thinking beyond that point. If you tell them the radiation meter tops out at 3.6 roentgen, they say “3.6 roentgen, not great, not terrible”.

The accusations weren’t particularly credible and similar slander campaigns against people like Joe Biden aren’t nearly as prominent.

Even notorious dictators like Mao Zedong get treated with kid gloves as long as they’re on the left: https://www.tracingwoodgrains.com/p/how-wikipedia-whitewashe...

> We're in a topic about tear gas being used to attack protestors.

You say protestors, I say rioters and organized physical resistance to legitimate law enforcement. If you think that’s a “tall claim” you’re the one in a media bubble.

> government jackboots suppressing lawful first amendment activity

If that was actually happening, I would be opposed to it. The only people suppressing lawful first amendment activity were Don Lemon and his friends invading a church, interrupting services, and blocking the exits as they screamed abuse at the parishioners.

Excellent point, and I think those bombings are not as well remembered as they should be. However, none of those bombings happened at the encouragement of and with the tacit cooperation of state government authorities.
philwelch··on Best Gas Masks
The reality is that tear gas is not an effective riot control tool. It works fine against spontaneous mobs of sports fans after their team loses, but it's not especially effective against prepared insurrectionists.

The last time the US faced this level of organized political resistance against lawful federal authority, the Army and National Guard routinely used fixed bayonets to control segregationist protesters. The same technique would work today, but with modern rifles being significantly shorter and hence being less effective bayonet platforms, a dedicated spear might be the better option.

Such weapons, employed in a close-order formation, would be much less lethal than they might seem at first blush. Historical data from 18th and 19th century conflicts shows that, even in battles where bayonet charges happened, there was still an extremely low rate of actual bayonet casualties. Even trained and disciplined soldiers will break and rout rather than let themselves be stabbed with bayonets (or, presumably, spears).

philwelch··on Tesla fined for repeatedly failing to help UK police over driving offences
Tesla isn't speeding either (probably; if FSD is speeding that's another issue), they're just manufacturing cars and leasing them to people in the UK.

In most US states, auto registration and auto titles are two separate things, which means our automated traffic camera systems can mail the tickets to the people who are probably actually driving the car. But I guess it's easy for a country like Britain to lay that kind of burden on auto manufacturers when they don't have any of them anymore.

philwelch··on Tesla fined for repeatedly failing to help UK police over driving offences
I've never seen you before either.
philwelch··on Tesla fined for repeatedly failing to help UK police over driving offences
Automated systems are fine, they would just be a lot better if they were used to dispatch patrol vehicles in real time rather than mailing letters to auto manufacturers.
philwelch··on Tesla fined for repeatedly failing to help UK police over driving offences
If they stopped arresting people for mean tweets I'm sure they could more than make up the manpower shortfall.
philwelch··on Tesla fined for repeatedly failing to help UK police over driving offences
That’s a horrible system. Britain used to be famous for the professionalism of their police and now they can’t be bothered to make a traffic stop and give people speeding tickets face to face.

philwelch··on CEO of health care software company sentenced for $1B fraud conspiracy
That’s fine. Prison guards, like all public employees, shouldn’t be unionized and prison labor should be earmarked either for restitution or public use (picking up highway litter, manual construction labor for roads and government buildings, etc.)
philwelch··on CEO of health care software company sentenced for $1B fraud conspiracy
The executives likely would, the SEC already does this.
philwelch··on CEO of health care software company sentenced for $1B fraud conspiracy
Criminals need to be isolated from peaceful society anyway, and if we’re going to the expense of warehousing them, the least we can expect is for them to contribute something back. The ethical justification for prison labor is obvious and the analogy to heritable chattel slavery is ludicrous.
