philote··on Slack is down for some users
Any recommendations on getting Discord notifications to reliably show up in a reasonable time on mobile? That's the one big issue I have with Discord. Otherwise I find it very useful.
philote··on Traffic Simulator
I guess it depends on the country. Here in the US trucks don't have limiters.
philote··on Django: Reformatted code with Black
I also prefer the close paren to be on it's own line. Besides how it looks, it feels easier to me to add to the code inside the parens (but this is likely because I use vim).
philote··on Django: Reformatted code with Black
Personally I prefer my code to read more like a sentence

instead

of

being

split

up

into

too

many

lines.

philote··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
To me it's not about getting free content, it's about not paying with my information and being unable to pay any other way. If a site wants to use ad networks that track me across the web, too bad for them. And also too bad if they don't offer a subscription model that disables ads AND tracking.

Also, ads can be served in ways that makes blocking much more difficult. It's just harder to do, and harder to track users across sites. (and therefore, probably less lucrative to the site owners).

What happened to serving ads based on site content? How is using poor algorithms that require a lot of tracking and then make bad guesses about your interests any better?

philote··on Doing too much work on one's own before looping in others
In my case, I'm the senior engineer and the rest of the team are juniors. There's generally not much I can ask them that they'd know the answer for. On the other hand, looping them in is a good learning experience for them even if they can't help me solve the issue. But due to time constraints that isn't always possible.
philote··on My out-of-body experience in a sensory deprivation tank
Yep, sounds similar to a hypnagogic state.
philote··on Gunicorn
It's straightforward to call sync functions from async ones. Are you referring to the fact that those sync functions could block and cause the async code to perform worse? I admit it's a few more lines of code to write a script that runs async code.

I've worked on several projects recently where async was used throughout and haven't had issues. There are many async libraries now, like ones to utilize GCP services, make HTTP calls, connect to Redis, etc.

philote··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
Just curious, have you seen any studies or evidence on whether omicron has caused the micro-clotting that seems to be the cause of some of these long-term effects? Everyone seems to be saying the effects of omicron are not as bad, but that talk seems to be limited to short-term effects, not the longer-term ones you brought up.
philote··on Ask HN: Has remote work made you move to a new location or consider it?
Yes, just before the pandemic we moved from a major city out to a rural, mountainous area. The area we moved to is much quieter and more full of nature, and yet we can somehow get fiber/gigabit internet while we could only get cable in the city. I hope to never have to go back. I don't miss the traffic or airplanes or crime. I do miss some of the entertainment opportunities, but it's only 2 hours to the city and there are plenty of outdoor activities to do now. My biggest complaint is lack of good restaurants, though this has prompted us to learn to cook better.
philote··on More than you want to know about gift cards
If it's a type of exchange where that may happen, then neither side likely needs the money. It's best to get just give a card. I think cash is more appropriate for parents/grandparents/aunts giving money to their kids/grandkids/etc, and less appropriate between peers. If you feel the need to get your peer something, then get them something you think they may like. If you don't know what that is, then IMO you should stick with a card or nothing at all.

My family has been moving away from gift giving, in favor of spending time together instead. Show people you care for them all year long and don't buy in to these over-commercialized traditions.

philote··on Blizzard executive asks employees to “consider the consequences” of union card
The headline makes it sound like Blizzard is throwing shade on unionizing by pointing out only the potential negative side of unions.

And you don't find it odd that Blizzard is only concerned about their employees' welfare when they're trying to unionize?

philote··on Ray Tracing with POV-Ray: 25 scenes in 25 days (2013)
I was just telling my son about POV-Ray yesterday, since he's starting to learn to use Blender and I dabbled with POV-Ray as a teen. I'm quite impressed that it's still being actively developed 30 years later.
philote··on FerretDB: A truly open-source MongoDB alternative
Plus, isn't it MAANA now? (Meta and Alphabet)
philote··on FerretDB: A truly open-source MongoDB alternative
Hah, I wasn't taking FerretDB seriously because it mentioned it was previously MangoDB. I was only familiar with https://github.com/dcramer/mangodb.
philote··on Fleet, a Lightweight IDE from JetBrains
I have to agree with you. At least in my experience this seems true (with a few exceptions). I feel that devs that rely on auto-complete and such of an IDE are never really forced to know the libraries and code they're using. To me it feels like training wheels they never take off, and therefore can never move at full speed. But maybe it's just that due to the popularity of these IDEs, many newer devs are using them while older, more experienced devs are still using what they're used to.

Quick edit: I work with some junior devs who all use IDEs. It pains me when I ask them where some code is and they only give me the filename and not the full path. I guess this is because that is what is most prominent in the IDE.

philote··on Emojimix
Yep, and I'm guessing there are also groups of emoji that work the same when merged with another emoji. For example, I think any monkey emoji + bread gives monkey bread.
philote··on I'm “still afraid to use spaces in file names” years old
Can't you usually just put quotes around the filename and/or path to prevent all those issues?

Edit: nope, just tried it and scp still sees the quoted filename as a host + path

philote··on A patent troll backs off
I agree it sounds like an ad. A quick search found this however: https://joelx.com/how-to-beat-a-patent-troll-in-east-texas/1... which makes me think it's legit. Weird it's almost verbatim from the blog post, but hey why bother spending time on a new write-up I guess.
philote··on Governor vows criminal prosecution of reporter who found flaw in state website
I wonder if he's trying to "control the narrative" in the hopes that he (or the state) isn't sued for releasing private teachers' data to the public.
philote··on Every search bar looks like a URL bar to users
Also, there sometimes isn't a good separation between the browser and the page itself. For example, I use a dark theme on my browser and was on a site that had a dark nav bar above their logo. They also had another navigation area, so I didn't even notice the top nav bar. I couldn't figure out how to log out of the site due to that.
philote··on Southwest new CEO denies walk-off rumors, defends pilots amid schedule meltdown
Anecdotal but I've heard from friends about scheduling (and other) issues with SWA. And when I flew SWA two months ago they had to put me in a hotel for a night due to a 6 hour late flight making me miss my connection. So yeah I'm guessing it's really what they say it is.
philote··on When Facebook went down this week, traffic to news sites went up
If a pizzaria wants business, it makes sense for them to advertise and have a way for people to find them. There are many alternatives to Facebook to help businesses do that, just like there are many ad agencies for them to use to get their ads on radio and TV. Business of course want to keep costs low and FB is (AFAIK) "free" to get started on. But once they get on FB, don't they still need to expand their reach by using Facebook ads? Or is just having a page enough? (I don't use FB so I'm clueless how that works)
philote··on The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've used
The author spent some time explaining the need to have a reliable laptop and spending $150 for 24-hour service and having two Powerbooks at once. But there was no mention of anything about reliability and repairs (well, replacement parts) for the Framework. I'm curious if he plans to keep a second Framework laptop in case parts are sold out, take too long to ship, etc.
philote··on Designing Beautiful Shadows in CSS
The "Posts" nav item has a dropdown that overlays the document and is still completely flat.
philote··on Web-based editor
A degree in Computer Science should teach you most of those things.
philote··on T-Mobile Hacker Who Stole Data on 50M Customers: ‘Their Security Is Awful’
Could this be because so many companies don't focus enough on security? So there isn't enough collective experience out there, making it hard to find those that do have the knowledge and experience.
philote··on Red Ventures has turned very specific advice into very big business
Just curious, what brought you to HN to create an account and comment on this post?
philote··on Hash collision in Apple NeuralHash model
But then you're searching and finding child porn images to send.
philote··on How to Hack APIs in 2021
I think it's just like anything that's gotten popular. SPAs are all over the place now, which means there are plenty of bad implementations along with the good ones. But generally you only notice the bad ones due to frustration. This isn't SPA-specific IMO. I've seen plenty of server rendered pages/sites that were also poorly done back when those were more the norm. Heck, I still help maintain a set of CGI scripts that are horrible and slow.
