phillytom··on Everything I wish someone had told me (about freelancing)
I would suggest finding someone who's trusted in working with local small businesses - probably themselves a small local shop with a few accountants - ask your hardware store owner, coffee shop owner, etc. If you are within a taxing municipality it can be helpful to have someone who knows the local ins and outs.

Generally speaking, the tax implications of being a freelancer are less complicated than small scale retail (e.g. no inventory).

phillytom··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (March 2012)
SEEKING FREELANCERS - Remote - Frontend - Javascript, HTML, CSS

I'm looking for a number of people who are interested in freelance work in (primarily) JS. Remote is fine, prefer full time (or close) availability. The development will be using our API and the Google Closure library (exp not required). A strong background in JS/HTML/CSS is needed.

There are a large number of projects available and they require little coordination, so they are pretty ideal for remote freelancing.

Contact me at tjanofsky at monetate if you're interested or have any questions.

Thanks!

phillytom··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (August 2011)
Conshohocken (Philly suburb), PA

Monetate is hiring - local only, happy to relocate. We've hired some great people that we met through HN. We're a SAAS provider of testing, targeting and personalization tools (e.g. content targeting, segmentation, A/B testing). We've got some grad, high-volume customers and we are growing fast.

http://jobs.monetate.com

Technically, we write lots of client-side JS for our customer-facing product as well as code that runs on our customers' sites. We're also looking for backend engineers that want to work on large data and web performance. We work in Python, but experience with that is not a prereq.

We have fun problems at scale, great people to work with, and we get instant feedback from our clients on everything we put out! We're having a blast.

phillytom··on Ask HN: How do you collect delinquent payment for contract work?
Same here, happened 2 or 3 times in 10 years. You need to decide if the amount is worth the continued ongoing aggravation of trying to collect. A direct phone call is a good place to start if you haven't already, it's easier to ignore email and letters.
phillytom··on Poll: How much do you make as a programmer?
I worked independently for years and health insurance can be really expensive. I eventually discovered the health savings account (HSA) / high-deductible combo. You can find packages that you pay about $300/month for which buys you access to group pricing (so you get the $30 Advil if you go the the hospital, not the rack rate $800 Advil) of which you pay all of up to a high deductible. In the end your exposure to medical bills for an emergency end up the same as or lower than what you'd be paying for low deductible coverage - e.g. $3600 / yr for premiums plus a 5K deductible puts you in the same monthly range you'd be paying for an HMO, but only if you use all the care. Email is in my profile if you want more details.
phillytom··on Google Singleton Detector
Also most people forget that the typical approach to singletons can yield multiple instances if the application employs multiple classloaders.

phillytom··on StackOverflow’s Careers 2.0

phillytom··on StackOverflow’s Careers 2.0
Can anyone comment on whether or not they have found advertising on the SO jobs board to be a good source of candidates? I listed a position there in December for a systems engineer with EC2 experience and got no responses - I've had much better luck with Startuply for example.

I second tptacek. This is one of the most effective places we have found candidates - we just hired our 3rd person from HN. Every candidate that has approached us through HN has been thoughtful and intelligent - although obviously not everyone is a match for what we are working on. Certainly I can offer anyone from here a actual person to talk to about your background and interests and what we are working on.

phillytom··on Ask HN: How does having a baby change your life?
My kids are the same age and I agree completely. At some point after my kids were born I found that the change in responsibility made many other areas of my life simpler.

Once I began to understand how I could fully commit myself to my children and what it means to have kids that fully depend on you, many other things became easier to prioritize and commit to, or reject. It was easier for me to focus at work and realize that I need to make that time valuable, it was easier to exercise and eat right, it was easier to say to no to people and drop activities that were not core to what I was doing. Maybe clarity around priorities is what changed the most for me.

phillytom··on Ask HN: Independant Consulting
I was an independent consultant for almost 10 years - the first year or two can be the toughest. One of the best pieces of advice that I got before I started was that you know that you're ready to be a consultant when people are calling you and offering you money to do work for them (i.e. your network and reputation is already mature). If you resort to a brokered arrangement the rates aren't nearly as compelling. If you think you've got contract work that will take you through your time period, go for it.

If you want to discuss further, or are interested in discussing F/T work (the company I work at - Monetate - is hiring in the Philly area) feel free to email tjanofsky at monetate dot com.

phillytom··on Ask HN: Free trial vs money back guarantee
Cost of provisioning and supporting was already mentioned - that's big .

Another key point to consider is the amount of effort required from the user in order to derive value from your product. If the product can be used easily and passively (e.g. Pandora) than a free signup makes the most sense.

If your product requires higher user engagement to be useful - i.e. they need to dedicate an hour or two to working with it, or need to integrate with something, than a refund or out may make more sense - many people treat free trials as worth what they paid for them - nothing. If someone has to pull out a CC, they have more likely overcome the hurdles necessary to engage with your service.
