philistine··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
The whole of the SR-71 was built around what kind of cameras was needed to perform the mission. Modern electronics and cameras are much smaller. I would presume an unmanned plane launched from a bomber could perform the mission today.
philistine··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Yup, Kerbal teaches you that very quickly. At the right spot in an orbit, the difference between touching water and infinite falling is very small.
philistine··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Europe manages to give a measurably better lifestyle for more people for less money than the US. Europe’s a success.
philistine··on Factorio that you can touch
> I do know that if I wanted to build a 10K SPM kilobase without ever going to space, I still could

Yeah, not everyone plays with the expansion.

philistine··on Apple iPhone 4 “Antennagate” Q&A (2010) [video]
There were what I would graciously call zealots who were adamant Apple had to build on OpenDoc to break Microsoft’s nascent monopoly with Office. When Jobs adequately cancelled all efforts on OpenDoc under the very correct vision that you can’t ship OpenDoc in a shrink wrap package, those zealots were furious.
philistine··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
I do not believe that once the ink dries on what the EU is willing to concede that the people in Canada would agree in a referendum.

This reeks of being custom made to enrage one person in particular and give leeway for negotiations.

philistine··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
He's as crazy as a coocoo clock.
philistine··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
Kids have a very poor ability to foresee and choose delayed gratification. The cookie experiment is proof of that. To children, a piñata is an exercice in intense delayed gratification. That and you get to hit things.
philistine··on AirPods 5
The long stems were literally the same length as on their wired headphones. They encased a bluetooth antenna and battery inside their existing design.
philistine··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
Those people need better glasses.
philistine··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
Do not use a display made for commercial kiosk use as a tv.

They have terrible response times, brightness levels meant to be seen under sunlight, not for the fine differences of movies.

philistine··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
The whole discussion on what the EU is doing has devolved into this idea that everyone will be forced to offer a backplate that pops out and a battery you can remove with your fingers.

The directive is far more complicated, and you will not see that at all.

philistine··on Asahi Linux on M3
This is it; why make your own CPU, if you can't make large breaking changes because you've promised Linux support?

Apple is not interested in tying their hardware design to Linus Torvalds.

philistine··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
Apple chose SCSI as its connector of choice in the 90s. It was a standard, it was faster and better than Serial, and PC manufacturers never bothered to offer it.

Apple chose an internal connector that worked with their CPUs. They couldn't even offer the connection styles on PCs; they worked differently.

Apple built its own mouse and keyboard cabling because they wanted to allow their users to connect their mouse to their keyboard, and to start the computer from the keyboard. No common cable offered them that.

Apple was literally first to the common rigid diskette. That they came up with file systems of their own is a measure of their early investments, and their need to maintain compatibility. They couldn't move to FAT, they had already made their own stack.

From my side of the fence, PC makers were laggards trying to save pennies who couldn't be bothered to invest in better technologies. Apple's success in cornering the majority of profits in the computer sector is a measure of their continued failures.

philistine··on European Commission Revives Push for Encryption Backdoors in ProtectEU Strategy
Look to the Westminster system for the true solution to the Commission’s lack of accountability.

Let the MEPs of each country vote on who amongst them will sit on the Commission.

philistine··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
Not significantly. Your point that only failed states decide to use another nation's currency is automatically a failed state is simply untrue. It can be a marker, but it's not an automatic mark. Montenegro is not a failed state.
philistine··on Inception-style curved map for turn-by-turn directions
Not every road owner in the world has provided how many lanes a road has. To tell you which lane to stay in, it need to know how many there are!
philistine··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
This shorthand that marketing means a bad thing is actually not true for Apple. Apple's marketing is how it ought to be at every company. They do market research to figure out what users need, they famously came up with the iPod's click wheel, they don't just do the ads. Of course Apple is eminently critiquable, but its marketing division is what everybody should do.
philistine··on hdiutil is deprecated in macOS 27 Golden Gate
Yeah, Apple is very weary of breaking user functionality. They'll just break your app's ability to run.
philistine··on Canada suspends trade negotiations with USA and match tariffs dollar for dollar
Québec makes 80% of the world’s maple syrup. You pretty much can’t get it anywhere else.
philistine··on Grand jury declines to indict Ohio man charged with destroying Flock camera
This attitude can be a strong precursor to positive change. In Canada, Dr. Morgentaler performed abortions in Montréal, and prosecutors were unable to compose a jury of enough people who would return a guilty verdict for any abortion. So it created an untenable situation for the government, who had no choice but to let doctors completely break the law until they were deemed unconstitutional against the newly penned charter.
philistine··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
If you want to see how exactly a Westminster Parliament would stop duly elected MPs who did not follow the rules, look at the 2022 controversy about the Parti Québécois MPs who refused to pledge allegiance to the monarch. They were physically stopped by the sergeant-at-arms.
philistine··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
It still works; he's one of the most lucrative dead artist!
philistine··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
Every Briton is entitled to one lunch with Adele.
philistine··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
DO IT! They probably do not even consider the idea that they would lose customers due to UX. Lower rates, promotions, change of circumstances, but there probably isn't a checkmark in their loss of customer forms that include we made our user interface worse.
philistine··on Can Intel finally beat ARM on performance per Watt?
The biggest tell of the A-series' chip concessions are the ports. A first for Apple, only one USB-C port is Thunderbolt, the other one is USB 2.0 speed. Apple made a computer with a chip made for devices with one port.
philistine··on As a Windows user, it's a surreal way to install a program
I moved to the Mac App Store version of OneDrive specifically because of the constant issues with the background processes it insists it must have running at all times.

The MAS version has only one of those and it works.

philistine··on As a Windows user, it's a surreal way to install a program
> Still, I think .pkg package style installers are the most intuitive process for non-techies, especially those coming from windows where MSI and install wizard style exes are common.

Nope. It's an app that is simply the .app bundle, skipping the whole historical footnote of a .dmg completely. Once you first run it, it asks if you want to move it to Applications, and promptly restarts from its new location.

philistine··on Show HN: I spent 2 years designing a mechanical Magic Keyboard
