philippp··on Ask YC: A startup blog or vlog?
There will be days when keeping a chipper face on video is going to be impossible. Stress shows on your face long before it shows in your writing.
philippp··on NoFollow Links on Hacker News
What SEO tool are you using?
philippp··on DHH: Are you sure you want to be in San Francisco?
Are you just trolling now? For the record, my roommate and I are paying $1,800 for a 1400 sq foot two bedroom. And that's a lot, when I compare with my friends who have lived here for more than a year.
philippp··on DHH: Are you sure you want to be in San Francisco?
I'm not planning to have kids in the near future, but sincerely hope that this trend shifts (as more people move out of the suburbs and into cities) when the time comes.

I walked to school as a kid, and could walk/bike to my friends' houses until I was 12. Then we moved to the suburbs, and visiting friends had to be worked into my busy parents' schedule -- hence, life got less social.

philippp··on Did you sign Google's noncompete? Good, you're fired
Because this is a legit story and prime argument as to why blanket bans are imperfect?
philippp··on Did you sign Google's noncompete? Good, you're fired
Non-competes don't stand up in court. Who would sign this type of agreement, though? I've signed non-competes before, but "I agree to provide a copy of this Agreement to any person or entities seeking to hire me before accepting employment with or engagement by any such person or entity." is insane.

I've never been so glad to not have taken a Google job.

philippp··on Why We’re Suing Facebook For $25 Million In Statutory Damages
Maybe a single thread for all April fools jokes would be appropriate?
philippp··on Why We’re Suing Facebook For $25 Million In Statutory Damages
"We’ll be filing the lawsuit tomorrow" isn't the punchline.

"I can say without hubris that I am a very important person" is. ;)

philippp··on Hackers Assault Epilepsy Patients via Computer
AFAIK "Hacking" is the creative implementation of any technology to do something it wasn't designed to do.

Cracking and griefing regrettably fall under that umbrella as well, as do physical assaults perpetrated with technology.

philippp··on Doomsday fears spark lawsuit over collider
People have always feared the world will end (doomsday!) because it's the only alternative to their guaranteed and insignificant personal demise.

It's a shame that this cowardice stands in the way of science.

philippp··on How To Hack Facebook In 51 Seconds
Web applications, especially amateurish ones, are insecure. I'm sure there are bigger sploits in FB itself.
philippp··on Ask YC: do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend?
It's depressing to read things like "Nope. Life as a computer science major in college and an overall geek leaves very little time."

I'm sure you play videogames, read/post on non-industry forums or do SOMETHING not work related. Socializing with women will help you find "the right one" in the long run, and will keep you from being taken advantage of once you "make it."

Personally, I broke up with my girlfriend of three years before moving to SF, independent of deciding to start YC. Overall, not having to "keep up" has definitely helped me.

I've been single throughout the nosebleed "grind-and-build-and-demo" three month YC cycle, but I regularly went out in SF and even had some flings that were fun but shallow distractions.

I've recently started dating an amazing woman who's completing her studies while working in Los Angeles; she's at least as busy as I am and we're "dating" in whatever capacity is possible. Although we're both ridiculously busy we respect our space/priorities, and it's fun and affirmative.

To each his/her own I suppose.

philippp··on "I loved that I couldn't take the Auctomatics to a bar for a company meeting."
Not being professional programmers probably helped them. I joined YC after working first as a "Software Engineer", then in a managerial position in a software firm.

I had to unlearn a lot of processes and "best practices" to get to the pace a startup requires. They started at the right pace.

philippp··on Ask News.YC: How to re-motivate yourself?
I agree 100% -- when I find myself drifting off during the workday, I take a break for however long it takes to get back on the horse. Sometimes that's an hour long bikeride, sometimes it's an entire weekend of "no laptop".

In either case, the mind sorts itself. I know EXACTLY what I have to do during my next run and I'm motivated and charged to execute.

philippp··on Learning to Smoke
More haxoring, less poor life choices plz.
philippp··on 10 web trends that should die - article is from 2005 but could have been written today
Seeing at these are still "problems" after three years mean that a lot of people are doing them successfully.
