pheon··on Yakuza
this has 0 relation to anything here, period.
pheon··on The games industry is a scam, and this is why you shouldn't go to work for it
Unfortunately making a "hit game" is the same as saying he will build the next Google/Facebook/Instagam/blah...

Having been in the games industry for 10 years, then pivoting into something else it sounds like the OP expected his manager to look after (or even care) about his career / life etc.

Doesn`t matter what industry your in, your boss has priorities. Last of which is your career/life but might appear to be on their list so as to keep you producing thus helps their priorities.

(there are ofcourse exceptions but they are rare)

pheon··on Jiro Dreams of Sushi
that the full menu costs $300 and you will finish in 30min. also reviews of the his sons restaurant say they get angry if you dont eat everything...
pheon··on AMD reveals Steamroller CPU architecture details
AMD`s business and technology development failed.

Athlon era:

1) Got HyperTransport - correct

2) Memory controller/north bridge into CPU - correct

3) lower price point than intel

They had a better product, at a lower price == market share.

Mobile:

They missed (as did intel) the ultra-low power/mobile market

1) ARM owns the market here

Bulldozer:

Made their bet on a high throughput/high latency micro-architecture, which didn`t pay off. So their now stuck with un-competitive technology at a lower price point which to the market == cheap knock off.

To make it worse, their process technology is a generation behind intel which increases costs thus eats further at any price discount.

GPU:

Meanwhile, Intel is eating their "Fusion" style cpu/gpu integration with every release they make. Can`t remember the last time some buzz about AMD fusion but intel HD 2k/3k/4k is in the news all the time.

They should have made Pat Gelsinger CEO when he was turned down for the same job at intel.

pheon··on The Panic Over Fukushima
Japans debt is largely domestic (Japan Post / JGB) thus has little influence on the trade balance.

Banking crisis has been going on since 2008 thus why didnt the trade balance suddenly fall this year instead of 2008/2009/2010

What is your explanation for the sudden change in trade balance?

pheon··on The Panic Over Fukushima
"that the myth of the necessity of nuclear power in Japan is just that. A myth"

This is just wrong. Japan is importing natural gas at prices x2-x5 higher than before. Causing Japans Trade balance (positive for nearly 30 years) to swing negative which is going to cause un-known and negative consequences for economy if this continues.

Energy both in availability and price is the economic engine that drives developed nations... we just replaced our Toyota to a expensive but nice BMW - somethings going to give.

pheon··on What is life like for PhDs in computer science who go into industry?
Your answer implies you have a high ego as you consider the questions below you and only interested in satisfying your own intellect/ego instead of working in a team that gets shit done... read shipping products.
pheon··on Biological impacts of the Fukushima on the pale grass blue butterfly
This is great research, as it provides more empirical evidence on what is actually happening vs bureaucrats fiddling with numbers in excel.. think China`s Official GDP vs Electricity output.

There was a good post a few weeks ago where sea water samples were taken in and around Fukushima area + further out. What was interesting is they detected high continuous levels of radiation in the water south of the power plant which should have diffused by now (half life of I 131)... their hypothesis was groundwater contamination.

pheon··on PCSX2 1.0 released
its not the fill rate/memory bandwidth but the incredibly low latency of the entire GS pipeline (which you cant get without edram) that makes it difficult to emulate.
pheon··on Trading Program Ran Amok, With No ‘Off’ Switch
Point is you dont know what the loss is.

1) They bought too much stock (incorrectly)

2) realized WTF, stopped everything

2a) more likely their clients said WTF is wrong first

3) had to sell the stock for the rest of the day.

Its only after they sold everything did the $440MM price tag surface. Hopefully they sold most of their positions to goldman (instead free market) so one of their investors made a boatload of cash.. giving them favorable terms for a line of credit.

pheon··on Study: High Speed Trading Hurts Long-Term Investors
HFT market making is about being more informed about the true price at the micro structure level than your counter-party. Simple as that, no black magic.

If someone trades with a HFT market maker its because

a) they are un-informed about the current true price

b) they choose to optimize execution time over best price

Its the same market game that`s been played for decades, just with different players and tools.

pheon··on Why I stopped working on the Bongard Problems
two more words "Unabomber Manifesto"

... blah blah blah technology is evil ... blah blah blah going into isolation

pheon··on Everything I’ve learned about selling SaaS in Japan
Jason & Paul, great to see you guys ramping up the hockey stick. Always watching what you guys do, and best of luck!
pheon··on XOR Linked List
its how I use them. theres the list + some other structure/object that points/references the node, usually multiple time and the node is contained in multiple lists - big data + performance optimization
pheon··on XOR Linked List
and your back to storing 2 pointers again.
pheon··on XOR Linked List
.. or you pass any node to a function that operates on the list. iterate up/down insert/delete etc.

point being you dont have to iterate from the start of the list.

pheon··on XOR Linked List
oooh very cool.
pheon··on XOR Linked List
it only works if you are linearly iterating from the start/end of a list.

IMHO one of the (few) primary benefits of linked lists is random access to insert/delete/iterate an element without having to traverse the entire list. Something that breaks with xor lists.

Secondly if you have so many nodes that the memory saving of one pointer is significant. Its likely traversing that list will take forever and force you to use a different algo anyway.

... an improvement on basic linked lists would be 16B/32B/128B/512B etc alignment of the nodes memory address and bit packing the Left/Right offset in units of the alignment unit. Hell you could probably beat xor lists for space for a range of workloads.

pheon··on Ask HN: Why don't people use Lua more often?
1) lua is not owned/marketed/pimped by any company

2) lua has no primary app domain/killer app. games to web to embedded to.. ?

3) lua is happy being itself. dosent try to "be the solution", its just a tool.

pheon··on Declining As A Manufacturer, Japan Weighs Reinvention
it should be healthcare because

1) massively ageing population 2) technology infra is 1st class

pheon··on Demoscene - The Art of the Algorithms
market absolutely, look at the amount of scene stuff on the web.

I think your question is, will someone pay money for a pure off the wall demo - short answer is no.

long answer is they kinda have for a while, futuremark was the classic commercialized demo. difference tho is, it had a utility besides the eye candy.

pheon··on Demoscene - The Art of the Algorithms
same here but mid 90`s oh the nostalgia. Kinda surprising, demogroups were kinda like small startups at least on the production side. biz side/product development/customer development/etc etc ... non existent, guess that`s why it was so fun.

Still great learning experience for a kid.

pheon··on The demise of the low level Programmer.
the order we learn is only a function of the constraints of the type of problems/projects we choose.

.. yet it is sad when a freshly minted CS grad thinks bit shifting and multiplication have nothing in common.

pheon··on Sony to Eliminate 10,000 Jobs, 6% of Workforce, Nikkei Says
add to that the content side, sony music, sony pictures. the music & movies are great but the vast majority dont pay for them.

sony has no leadership. leadership is not "break down the silos and lets all work together".. thats management.

pheon··on No Free Lunch for Intel MIC (or GPU’s)
dont overlook the power of a brand. In this case its x86 which means brand intel, which is about as strong as it gets in Tech.

Alot of decisions are made by non-technical or are technical but lack the depth of understanding.

e.g. propose intel MIC vs Telira (similar thing but with MIPS cores)

pheon··on The Psychology of Tackling Hard Problems
3 reasons to not turn back in 2 categories

Category A : walking in the dark tunnel is enjoyable

1) having fun so keep walking

Category B: its not fun

2) Peer pressure, either family, friends, investors, cofounders/employees

3) Expected upside at the end of the tunnel is greater than the walk back

In reality its a combination of 2) & 3) and why pg&co strongly recommend co-founders. e.g. 3) starts you out, 2) keeps you going.

pheon··on How I survived a plane crash
seems HN has finally become reddit.

what does this have anything to do with hacking, startups, or even computers.

pheon··on Facebook will take action to protect the privacy and security of their users
its simply understanding your client`s pain point(s) and providing a solution.

Thing is there`s 2 users here

1) facebook user. demanding inappropriate access to their personal life is invasive - todays memo... check.

2) employer/potential employer. Understanding the character of the candidate. Facebook offers a premium service e.g. say $10k/seat that offers more in-depth access. similar to LinkedIn`s premium account.. yet users dont feel violated.

Todays note address 1) maybe 2) will be addressed in the future. Im sure that would be quite the cash cow.

pheon··on [dead]
...it states their classifying woman as "childless women" which likely skews their results dramatically. e.g. filtering out all the low/0 earning women but including the low earning men.
pheon··on The Little White Box That Can Hack Your Network
It seems more and more like the concept of 'local law enforcement' needs to die. Open everything up to everyone at large, and harden all men, women and children to the realities of violence.

We should disbanded corporate, local, state, federal and country law enforcement. there should be no countries, borders or walls anywhere and you should also leave your house/apartment/car door unlocked because we have all been hard ended by carrying loaded assult weapons and heavy armor 100% of the time, including your 5yo school kid.

oh.. will get karma from hell for this.
