phakding··on Ask HN: Help, I am stuck in another pointless weekly meeting
Use it as a break from work. Browse internet, meditate etc. Being bored is not a bad thing.
phakding··on Yabbos: Yet another browser based operating system
Why were you unable to come up with an appropriate name for you browser based operating system?

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=yabbos

phakding··on Why open office design makes people less productive
These and some other trends are originated in Agile methodologies, are they not? Software engineering is being taken over by pseudo scientific ideology is what it is. Funny thing is, no proof/studies are needed to make sweeping changes like these.
phakding··on Ask HN: How do you foster strong engineering culture in your organization?
I think hiring people with right attitude is the only solution. You can try to create a strong culture around them, but it's like taking a horse to water. The drinking part can't be forced. I am not saying right incentives and good culture is not necessary. That however only takes you so far.

Another thing that comes to mind is peer pressure with right people can do wonders.

phakding··on What to do during break from work?
Chit chat with co-workers about non-work/technology related topics. Football/sports, house, family, kids, politics etc etc.
phakding··on Sears Hires Advisers to Prepare Bankruptcy Filing
They are shedding tears for themselves. Most of them left a while back, bit some are still sticking back.
phakding··on Bullshit asymmetry principle
In ideal world, your technical argument would be enough for higher-ups to take your concerns seriously. In real world, it's mostly how much they like and trust you. If they don't, then validity of your argument will be of no value.
phakding··on Sears Hires Advisers to Prepare Bankruptcy Filing
I have many friends who work for Sears corporate. Listening to them, it seemed like Lampert bet his company on his libertarian ideology. Turned out Ayn Randian ideology doesn't work in real life.
phakding··on Ask HN: How to avoid TV addiction?
Watched it for third time recently. I agree.
phakding··on H-1B: As immigration furor roils Silicon Valley, Canada smooths way for techies
Never said it's impossible. Is it practical though? If you are migrating to a country 8000 miles away, would you live like you lived in the slums of Dharavi? Some will. Most though, would like to live a normal life commensurate with their income.
phakding··on Ask HN: What are the engineering challenges in high frequency trading?
Rewriting GC seems like a serious overkill. One could achieve serious low latency with hotspot.
phakding··on H-1B: As immigration furor roils Silicon Valley, Canada smooths way for techies
One story doesn't make a pattern.
phakding··on H-1B: As immigration furor roils Silicon Valley, Canada smooths way for techies
I am one of those and almost everyone ( with exception of one or two every class) in my masters programs we're on F1 Visa. Most of my friends work six figure jobs in cities nowhere close to as expensive as Bay area. I know for a fact, nobody has accumulated million dollars in cash. Close to million in worth? Yes if you count real estate with mortgage, but not that kid of cash. Math doesn't add up.

> That sounds great. Come to USA after college, make a million dollars in a few years, move back home, get married, and build the Indian economy

LOL. Your comment doesn't even pass smell taste. How many people working as developers will make million dollars in few years after paying payroll taxes? Federal, state, social security, medicare on top of paying for housing, car insurance, health insurance, renter/house owner's insurance, trips back to homeland etc etc. Forget about fun and entertainment, or clothes, shoes, phones, computers, internet etc. Even with extreme level of penny pinching, 40% rate of saving is almost unachievable.

Now assuming every single immigrant that comes here after college makes $150 right off the bat, that $60K in bank every year. At that rate, to save million dollars, one would need 16.66 years. That too assuming there are no incidentals that become money pits.

Good luck getting married at almost 40 or getting uprooted and having to adjust to the different work environment or progress in the industry without any contacts. It's not all puppys and rainbows.

phakding··on Ask HN: What are the engineering challenges in high frequency trading?
> Reading some opinions you feel like for low-latency a GC language is a no-go. Maybe you care to comment on that.

This is false as far as my experience goes. I've personally worked at two exchanges (big ones) and they do use java. Also have interviewed with many trading firms that use java for trading platform.

phakding··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a Senior Software Engineer?
Take it easy. Work Is not your baby. Don't attach emotions to work. Do all you can for 8 hours and then forget the moment you get out of the door. Don't respond to emails from home. Don't carry work phone unless you must.

Invest in family, kids, hobbies, health, stocks/bonds, travel etc. There's more to life than work.

Remember you work to live not live to work.

phakding··on Nobel Prize in Chemistry Is Awarded to 3 Evolutionary Scientists
You are not on Fox news, mate.
phakding··on Why I’m Worried About Google
What is Google's end goal here? More accurate targetted advertising?
phakding··on Ask HN: How do we save the planet?
I totally agree with you. The republican party is merely a middle man though. They have been doing the bidding of their corporate overlords. Same in other countries like Australia. "Clean coal" is being promoted, forests have been bulldozed and coral reefs ignored.

How do you deal with such reckless greed of uber-wealthy?

phakding··on Vote.org needs your help increasing voter turnout this year
Is there anything that can be done to move voting day to Sunday or make voting day a federal holiday? As a non-native, I am curious.
phakding··on The annoying habits of highly effective people
You probably misunderstood the post you replied to.
phakding··on The annoying habits of highly effective people
Well I don't even know what a cto does. I have been in many meetings with them, but besides making high level decisions and asking for status, I don't know what they do.

Besides I was born in poverty and needed lot of efforts to be able to socialize with people born upper middle class. I can only imagine what else I need to learn to socialize within upper echelons. I can't explain it to you fully.

Thanks for asking though, I never thought through this before.

phakding··on The annoying habits of highly effective people
> Interesting perspective. Is it your belief that people read these as how-to or self-help books?

My friends and acquitances definitely read these books to glean some sort of inspiration/hidden jem that would start them on path to riches.

My life has no parallel to lives of these people and there's nothing I could copy.

It's my opinion that the odds of me being a CEO of a huge Corp are same as a person who is homeless for years going through college and getting a job making six figures.

phakding··on The annoying habits of highly effective people
Never understood people's infatuation with reading CEO biographies. I've read a few and never found anything in it that could relate to. May be I am not meant to be one of those people. Even if I worked hard, got in at work at 5 am every day, I don't think I could go from being a lowely team lead to cto or CEO of a multi billion dollar corporation. I don't think it just works that way. I could be very wrong, but that's my experience.
phakding··on Ask HN: What is something you achieved that you once thought was impossible?
Not being poor anymore. Took years of work and patience. I remember in my teens, walking past a five star hotel or a fancy mall would give me anxiety, make me feel like someone would yell at me if I tried to go in. Now I routinly stay at such hotels. Good times!
phakding··on Ask HN: What is something you achieved that you once thought was impossible?
Not OP, but I would recommend Chantix/Champix. It's like quitting on easy mode.
phakding··on Ask HN: What are some alternatives to Google maps?
I second here maps. This is navteq maps of past. Last time I checked they were more accurate than Google maps.

I worked for the company few years ago.

phakding··on Ask HN: How do developers learn new skills quickly?
Quickest way is to build something with what you are learning. It's frustrating at first when you don't know much, but once you get a little success you can quickly build on it.

Books usually start from very basic and it takes long time to start writing something useful and fulfilling.

phakding··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
I bought the DVD after it was released, but could never bring myself to watch it. The few clips I watched were extremely disturbing for me.
phakding··on Ask HN: Do you regret becoming a programmer?
This profession lifted me out of poverty and made it possible to take up hobbies without having to think about money. I am thankful.
