ph4··on Salmon return to lay eggs in historic habitat after dam removal project
I'm lucky enough to have a salmon-bearing stream on my property here in the northwest. They are an extremely inspiring species to watch through their lifecycle. Tenacious.
ph4··on Study finds that 52% of ChatGPT answers to programming questions are wrong
I view it as an e-bike for my mind. It doesn't do all the legwork, but it definitely gets me up certain hills (of my choosing) without as much effort.
ph4··on Ask HN: Has anyone gotten complete, permanent relief from tinnitus?
Yes. I got fitted for a mouth guard by my dentist, which I wear to sleep at night. My tinnitus was caused by grinding/clenching my teeth.
ph4··on Ask HN: Working in tech for climate?

ph4··on Pioneering economist says our obsession with growth must end
I was introduced to Daly's work recently through The Great Simplification podcast. I highly recommend this episode:

ph4··on Ask HN: First-time dad-to-be. What do you wish you'd known back then?
Lift with your knees.

ph4··on Kodak factory tour: How does Kodak make film? [video]
Any tips for buying used gear? I purchased three consecutive Nikon FEs off of eBay, and each one arrived with a different mechanical issue. I was lucky enough to be covered by return policies in those cases, but I'm hesitant to purchase again.
ph4··on Major nuclear fusion milestone reached as ‘ignition’ triggered in a lab
So is the goal just to fuel our current patterns of consumption and development with fusion, or nuclear, or whatever?
ph4··on The Lost Canyon Under Lake Powell
"Lake Powell, which some people consider the most beautiful place on earth..."

Nobody actually believes this.

ph4··on Ask HN: 5h-10h per week side gig?

ph4··on Django 3.2
What was so painful about it? Unless you're making some really significant changes to your models, Django's migration commands handle 99.9% of cases including most common edge cases. I can't imagine it being any easier, and certainly haven't seen any other web frameworks handling migrations any better.
ph4··on Nuclear should be considered part of clean energy standard, White House says

ph4··on We Expect 300k Fewer Births Than Usual This Year in the US
I'm sure there are all sorts of negotiations and esoteric adjustments going on behind the scenes - $45k was the total of the itemized invoice sent to my insurance company. I'm unsure exactly of how much it will cost me out-of-pocket, but I'm expecting $3-4k.
ph4··on We Expect 300k Fewer Births Than Usual This Year in the US
My first kid was just born last week. The hospital billed my insurance company $45k. This is for an uncomplicated, straight-forward vaginal birth.
ph4··on Hacker increased chemical level at Oldsmar's city water system, sheriff says
Why would 11,100 be recognized as a valid value to begin with?
ph4··on Prosperity comes at 'devastating' cost to nature
This reads like religious dogma to me.
ph4··on 1% of farms operate 70% of world's farmland
This is a gross over-simplification of an incredibly complex problem. For those interested in an analysis that goes beyond 140-character insights, please read A Small Farm Future by Chris Smaje. And for those uninterested, be cautious of these "common sense" hot takes.
ph4··on 1% of farms operate 70% of world's farmland
For those interested in the subject, I encourage you to read Chris Smaje's new book, A Small Farm Future. Fascinating analysis of the existing state of affairs, and where we might be headed.
ph4··on So you want to write your own CSV code (2014)

ph4··on Ask HN: Mind bending books to read and never be the same as before?
Sex, Ecology, Spirituality by Ken Wilber

The Wisdom of Insecurity by Alan Watts

The Passion of the Western Mind by Richard Tarnas

The Nature of Consciousness: Essays on the Unity of Mind and Matter by Rupert Spira

Becoming Animal: An Earthly Cosmology by David Abram

ph4··on Ask HN: What’s the most important modern simple invention?
I'm having trouble seeing how this even makes the top 100 list of "most important".
ph4··on Santa Cruz decriminalizes psychedelic mushrooms
It's ironic that you ask for a "fairer representation", and then go on to deliver an inaccurate, "reefer madness"-esque, culturally and personally conditioned caricature of psilocybin.
ph4··on The Myth of Self-Reliance: An encounter with Emerson’s essays
This comment has nothing to do with the article. You responded to half of a headline.
ph4··on Aussie firefighters save world's only groves of prehistoric Wollemi pines
Not necessarily. Increased fire frequency is the primary hypothesis cited for why the population of Wollemia nobilis is so small today. They've absolutely seen fires in their past, but due to the nature of the physical isolation of this particular grove (incredibly steep, wet, narrow sandstone canyons), they've been insulated from the worst of it.
ph4··on Neural correlates of the DMT experience assessed with multivariate EEG
Isn't obsessing over the neurobiology of DMT experiences burying the lede? The far more interesting question in my mind is how mystical experience engenders lasting psychological benefit. And considering DMT's 5-7 minute half life, I doubt it has a lot to do with the physical brain.
ph4··on AWS Experiencing Intermittent DNS Resolution Errors
Thanks, this fixed my issues with my local dev environment.
ph4··on Vegan takeaway orders quadruple over past two years
I stopped eating meat at the start of this year after reading "Eating Animals" by Jonathan Saffran Foer. My primary concerns were ethical. I'm not necessarily morally opposed to eating meat, but I am opposed to the inhumane conditions of factory farming.

I am shocked at how easy it was to stop. I always pictured some long and tormented inner battle, but the book made the necessity of the decision self-evident. I eat meat maybe once per month now, a 99% reduction in intake, with no significant physical or psychological struggle whatsoever.

ph4··on Employee happiness and business success are linked
Serious question, why post something for discussion if it's behind a paywall?
ph4··on What If Consciousness Comes First?
For those interested in potential viable ontologies other than reductive physicalism, I encourage you to read the works of Bernardo Kastrup. His most recent book, The Idea of the World, is well-argued and very interesting.
