ph4··on The decline of the family has unleashed an epidemic of loneliness
Don't move. Stay in your small town. Narrow the scope of your dreams, dial down your ambition to something more reasonable. Jettison idealistic principles, come to terms with self-imposed limits on your potential using elaborate rationalizations. Opt-out of the status game by creating a new I-don't-need-status game. Struggle to find opportunity in a stagnant or declining economy. Struggle to find a compatible partner in a significantly smaller dating pool. Earn less. Pay less for lower quality food from chain restaurants. Pay less for housing with limited access to natural or cultural wonders of any kind. Explore and experience less. Settle. Compromise.

Make some friends. Go to your friends' funerals when they die from opioid overdoses. Make some new friends. Go to the local bar with them, listen to the same songs. Every weekend.

Your parents die anyway.

It's the American dream.

(I don't think either of these depictions are helpful or accurate).

ph4··on Repositories held for ransom by using valid credentials
The attacker is also threatening to make these private repos public, or misuse their access to the repos in other ways (likely additional types of breaches).
ph4··on Sedate a Plant, and It Seems to Lose Consciousness. Is It Conscious?
Convention = arbitary. It's conventional. For convenience. Relative. Not absolute. Same as your lines defining what is and isn't conscious.
ph4··on Sedate a Plant, and It Seems to Lose Consciousness. Is It Conscious?
You're drawing arbitrary cutoffs in your height example. Which brings back the original question, what's your selection criteria for consciousness?
ph4··on Ask HN: Which books do you wish you'd read earlier in life?
The Book and The Wisdom of Insecurity, both by Alan Watts. Then I could have inoculated myself from the myopic obsession with eco-consciousness promoted by the rest of the books in this thread.
ph4··on Sedate a Plant, and It Seems to Lose Consciousness. Is It Conscious?
Seems to me that consciousness is a matter of degree, with devices like thermostats at one pole, and self-reflective neocortex-style consciousness at the other.

Not that I have a strong desire to defend the consciousness of thermostats. I just wouldn't consider the article pseudo-scientific rubbish, and I definitely wouldn't just write off this type of inquiry or discussion as some kind of harmful fake news.

ph4··on Sedate a Plant, and It Seems to Lose Consciousness. Is It Conscious?
Do you have a working definition of consciousness?
ph4··on Sudden savant syndrome, in which exceptional abilities emerge after brain injury
Reading these comments is a fascinating look into the ontology assumed by militant scientific materialists.
ph4··on History of AOL Warez

ph4··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
Is there a clear, objective, and accurate list of the ways in which the DNC rigged the primaries? All of my searches turn up shady conspiracy web sites.
ph4··on Introducing Bootstrap Studio
We've been using this for about 6 months to bang out prototypes very quickly. Happy with it so far.
ph4··on Show HN: Nodal. Next-Generation Node.js Server and Framework
Starting with Django 1.7, migrations have been available in the core package.
ph4··on Ask HN: What are the books that changed the perspective of your life?
Alan Watts - The Wisdom of Insecurity

An exploration of man's quest for psychological security and spiritual certainty in religion and philosophy.

ph4··on Learn AngularJS
So what should we be learning if we want to be exposed to high-level, highly-transferrable concepts related to front-end frameworks?
ph4··on Ask HN: Who are your favorite poets?

The heart can think of no devotion
Greater than being shore to ocean -
Holding the curve of one position,
    Counting an endless repetition.

    Robert Frost
ph4··on Cities with High Salary to Cost of Living Ratios for Software Developers
Sorry, the trivial amount of people using noscript is simply unimportant to me.
ph4··on A Software Engineer’s Adventures in Learning Mathematics
I'm taking Discrete Math now and have both books. Epps' has much simpler explanations. I haven't taken algebra in 5 years and find that Rosen's assumes a lot more knowledge, frequently skipping lots of steps in its explanations, which can be very confusing if you are rusty in the basics.
ph4··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2014?
Wonderful book. Try "The Wisdom of Insecurity" next. And to anyone considering either of these, I think TWoI is a slightly better intro to Watts' work.
ph4··on What was your best passive income in 2014?
I wrote all the content myself, which took maybe 20-30 hours. The theme is a profession in the veterinary field, so it offers advice to prospective students and people interested in the career (schooling, salary, etc.)

It requires zero maintenance. I haven't touched it or written anything new in a couple years.

ph4··on What was your best passive income in 2014?
About $75-$100 a month from a simple AdSense site that ranks highly for some key terms. Pretty lame.
ph4··on People (understandably) hate to register
This is a good way to piss off your marketing department. Unfortunately sometimes UX has to take a hit in the name of the bottom line. Email/direct marketing works. It won't deliver value to every user on every contact, but even 5% response rates can offer ROI.
ph4··on Alexander Shulgin has died
A one of a kind, once in a generation human being.
ph4··on LSD, Reconsidered for Therapy
Sorry, but that sounds like absolute bullshit.
ph4··on How Understanding the Process of Enlightenment Could Change Science
So? Why does do you need science's permission to do anything?
ph4··on Group Matchmaking Startup The Dating Ring (YC W14) Launches In San Francisco
What the heck is with that logo?
ph4··on Show HN: I built this game alone – design, code, music, sound, marketing
You're like the Survivorman of development, carrying your own cameras and playing the harmonica on top of the real stuff.
ph4··on How Religion Destroys Programmers
Slightly off-topic, but would anyone recommend Sonmez's Pluralsight videos - Java Fundamentals in particular?
ph4··on Cookie Bomb or Let's Break the Internet
Terry Davis scares me.
ph4··on Show HN: Kimono – Never write a web scraper again
Very nice job. What about scraping data from password-protected pages?
ph4··on 100 Days of Meditation
It's worth it to me because I have seen significant shifts in my baseline sensory clarity, concentration, and equanimity. These improvements benefit everything I do every moment of the day.

There is a lot of scientific research on meditation underway. You might want to check out the IONS Meditation Bibliography to see if any of the studies interest you: http://noetic.org/meditation-bibliography/bibliography-info/
