pferdone··on How I Practice Piano
Haha, I knew my post had the potential to be taken the wrong way...and its not $200 for 'books' but for hours upon hours of video learning material, live sessions with teachers, backing tracks for your practice songs, PDFs with practices for your particular lesson and so on. I‘m just really a fan of the site and wanted to share my experience, and no I haven’t been paid to write this text on my 5yrs old account with 100 karma. :)

p.s yes I‘m not a native speaker

pferdone··on How I Practice Piano
I started playing piano in February/March and since 'real' lessons are out of the question right now, I wanted to learn it the right way. I looked around and I didn‘t wanted it to be a party trick, where I can play 3 songs by heart and that‘s it. I found pianote and to me it‘s one of the best teaching sites about a particular subject I‘ve ever seen. They take so much time to teach you the fundamentals and their progression path with 'The Method' makes learning fun and challenging. If you‘re looking for a good online course, I think there‘s no better one out there. Even a friend of mine, who plays drums in a band heard of it and said he only heard good things about it. I practice almost everyday and pianote is the best investment in myself I did in a long time.

edit: ah well, the HN downvote army comming in for voicing my experience on the subject discussed, what can you do... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

pferdone··on Why cats won’t punish a stranger who harms you
The video linked by CraneWorm shows a cat (when acting on instinct) doesn‘t care about size differences. The dog probably outweighs the cat 4:1 yet the cat is able to stand its ground.
pferdone··on Why cats won’t punish a stranger who harms you
Yeah I‘d argue (as it always is) it depends. A lot of people know this video where a cat protects its hooman from a dog https://youtu.be/EEa6jZv-Khc so there‘s no general rule.
pferdone··on Why do interviewers ask linked list questions?
But do you ask this question, because it‘s part of the job to write linked lists or because it‘s something they should know if they had proper education?
pferdone··on Coinbase Is a $100B Crypto Cult
If Bitcoin showed one thing, it's that we can have a way to transact ownership of bytes from one address/wallet to another with a shared network without intermediaries and implicit trust of parties. IMHO it's a very big PoC and the number of people participating over the years makes it a success to me.

Did we forget about PRISM[0]? It's all the same, just different labels depending which side you're on.

I think you're both on the same page here, but (and I'm also guessing here) I think OP implies there's a certain bias when it comes to chinese servers. And I too have this feeling, that if it's a server in the "western world" not a lot of people would bat an eye. But if it's a chinese or russian server, now that's something "we don't want".
pferdone··on Data fetching on the web still sucks
Half of the stuff he mentioned are covered by apollo-graphql and libs in that eco-system: query batching, notifications (via subscriptions), automatic state updates via cache, typesafety with typescript and grapqhl-codegen. It doesn‘t seem like he even looked at the libraries he listed. :(

Just gotta say: amazing!

My follow up question would be: are you able to compare your results to actual photogrammetry data to see how good your reconstruction performs?

pferdone··on NeRF in the Wild: reconstructing 3D scenes from internet photography
how many pictures or angles are needed to produce good results? I get that landmarks have an abundance of source material, but whats a reasonable amount of data to reconstruct scenes?

TerraPower [1] seem to have a good alternative with its Traveling Wave Reactor. It can be run on nuclear waste we already have and provide energy to 10bln people with US per capita power consumption for basically eternity.

pferdone··on Apollo raises $22M to simplify app development
I‘m not talking about theory here but about my professional experience using GraphQL and Apollo for two years in production code. To be specific: I would hardly have a use-case for Redux when apollo-client already has built in local state handling capabilities. Throw in TypeScript and generate your type interfaces from your schema and your queries and there‘s no second guessing. GraphQL and Apollo is not at fault for people writing bad code who mix patterns and ideas that shouldn‘t go together.
pferdone··on Apollo raises $22M to simplify app development
> With GraphQL, my understanding is that there is zero back end work. You just tell the GraphQL engine what data you need and it magically arrives into your browser.

It doesn‘t quite work like that. Someone still has to implement the backend (resolvers). If you want to request dogs from your backend someone still has to implement the dogs query, but (and I think that‘s one of the greatest things about GQL) as soon as it is implemented, you can introspect your backend and see exactly which properties a dog can have. So you know whether the dog object has a name property, or an isHungry property and so on. So now you can specifically ask for a dog and its name if that‘s all your view needs. Another view might only need the breed, so that‘s what you query for...view specific queries.

pferdone··on Apollo raises $22M to simplify app development
> When I reference a Person object in my view that I'm using, will phone number be there or not, who knows.

Well you know, because your view has a query that asks for a Person object with or without a phone number. The cache (your store) is managed by Apollo not yourself.

pferdone··on Interview with Japanese demoscener 0x4015 (2017)
I have this firm belief that demo writers are literal gods amongst programmers. Nothing comes close to their knowledge and craftsmanship and the resulting art they create. To me it is the purest form of programming bar none. I'm in constant awe and have the utmost respect for these guys. Just had to get it off my chest. Thanks for reading!
pferdone··on Announcing TypeScript 3.1
Static vs dynamic typing aka catching type errors on compile and not on runtime. Easily refactor code and all references there of. I would also say that I‘m faster using TypeScript BECAUSE of autocompletion, implicit code documentation through types, etc. The cost you listed are solved during the setup of a project.

I can just talk for myself, but I started a project at work and pushed for TypeScript. We now have automatically generated Swagger-clients fully typed, with a GraphQL layer infront of it with generated types for queries. Basically everything is typed now and I don‘t have to test or check incomming data or guess what kind of object I have to expect from our backend. The tooling is so good now, that the benefits outweigh any setup hassle you have upfront IMHO.

Not true. Direct quotes from the article:

Still, Ersek cautioned that the pilot may be too early on and “too small” to draw conclusions, as Western Union has only tested the cryptocurrency for transfers between two currencies—U.S. dollars and Mexican pesos—so far.

“I don’t want to kill it,” Ersek said of the partnership, adding that the Ripple team working with Western Union “are good people” who are “very innovative.”
