pezezin··on On social reality in China
> Japan does not have this problem at all, even though they invented the anime aesthetic. Where is the Chinese Mario, Elden Ring, or Metal Gear? What studio is producing a truly original distinct visual language?

I live in Japan and I strongly disagree. The products you mention are the ones strong enough to get exported overseas, but within Japan itself you get a thousand manga/anime/dorama/idols/games per year that all look pretty much identical, everything feels extremely derivative.

Many languages still call them "condensers"; from the top of my head, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, and likely many others.
pezezin··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
I agree with you. First, "broken" is not a binary, it might not be broken but it might not work well either. Second, sooner or later everything breaks, and you better be ready for when that happens.

On the other hand, Retroarch users will keep running MAME 2003-Plus until the sun becomes a red giant...
pezezin··on An airport cooled by natural ventilation
That is also true. I guess it also depends on the airflow and if there is a breeze or not, inside the buildings air tends to get stagnant.
pezezin··on An airport cooled by natural ventilation
It really depends on the humidity. 30 degrees in my dry hometown in central Spain is tolerable, 30 degrees with 90% humidity here in Japan where I live now is pure pain.
pezezin··on 2DWillNeverDie
But for whatever reason, here in HN you see a lot of people that don't play games but feel the need to give their opinion on the gaming industry, criticize modern gaming, and ramble on how old games where better. I find it really weird...
pezezin··on Fearless SIMD v1.0
MAME was started in 1997 and is now on version 0.289 xD
pezezin··on 2DWillNeverDie
I find this kind of comments weird. So you stopped playing for 25 years and now are surprised that games have evolved?
pezezin··on 2DWillNeverDie
There were plenty of terrible games back then, but we only remember the good ones.

Likewise, there are plenty of amazing games nowadays, but the ragebait culture makes us focus on the bad ones.

pezezin··on Far-left party wins Berlin election, pledging to nationalise housing
> For example, housing standards of Japan and the US, which are way cheaper and still serve two of the richest countries in the world, would never be allowed in Germany. That makes housing unaffordable and drives people into poverty.

I live in Japan, so I know it first-hand.

Housing standards in Japan are awful. The average Japanese city is chaotic and ugly with zero urban planning, and the average Japanese house is built with the cheapest possible materials and has zero insulation. I remember reading that the average Japanese house uses 7 times more energy than the average German house! You do NOT want to build houses like Japan.

pezezin··on Original Sony PlayStation 2 security chip 'broken wide open' after 26 years
I understand your point, and I kind of agree, but does it really matter? When we enjoy old artifacts we don't have the same experience as someone who did it back in the day. Old paintings will shift colours, old buildings will decay and might become ruins, old books might need to be "translated" due to language shifts, and in any case we lack the proper cultural background to fully appreciate them.

In a few decades everybody who played the PS2 upon release will be dead, and our descendants will not care if the emulation is 100% accurate or just 99% accurate.

pezezin··on Original Sony PlayStation 2 security chip 'broken wide open' after 26 years
The PS2 was released in 2000, so yes, after 26 years.

Yeah, I have also seen those ones. Why 3:2 instead of the more common 16:10 is a mystery to me.
pezezin··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
Don't feel bad. I also live in Japan, and in my experience most homes (mine included) still use gas boilers and kerosene heaters. Not to mention that houses are built to be as cheap as possible, so insulation is almost non-existent and you boil in summer and freeze in winter.
pezezin··on What will our economic future look like?
Not every country is like the US. My country has a public healthcare system; I never needed private insurance and never had to pay for a visit to the doctor.
pezezin··on What will our economic future look like?
If I remember correctly, the procedure was to prepare a food sample, put it in a temperature-controlled environment for 24 hours, and next day see if something grew there or not. If it did, the food was contaminated.

You could try shortening the time to 6 or 12 hours, but then

1) if something grew then the food was contaminated, but if it didn't, how can you be sure it is good or you just didn't wait enough? You would get a lot of false negatives.

2) the lab followed a normal 8 hours a day schedule, so nobody would be there to analize the results. You would not gain anything.

pezezin··on The Kuycon P20 – 28" 4500x3000px 3:2 monitor
Sorry, I forgot to mention that you can find them in 16", but I would like at least 24" to use it as my main monitor.
pezezin··on What will our economic future look like?
This was also a public health system (Spain), but I guess it might depend on the country.

Now that you mentions labs, he spent the last 10 years of his career (maybe more, I don't remember clearly) working at a food analysis lab and there was a lot of waiting for results there, but it is what it is, microorganisms take their time to grow and no LLM in the world can make them go faster.

pezezin··on The Kuycon P20 – 28" 4500x3000px 3:2 monitor
Talking about unusual monitor aspect ratios, what I would really want is a 3840x2400 monitor. 1920x1200 is somewhat common and easy to find, but 2400p is only available on a few laptops.

Why 2400p? Because it is the LCM of 400, 480 and 600, so it would allow perfect integer rescaling of my favourite MS-DOS and early Windows games.

pezezin··on What will our economic future look like?
My dad is a retired nurse. Most of his work was giving shots, treating wounds, extracting blood, putting IV catheters, etc. In other words, physical tasks. How is an "AI agent" or LLM going to take care of that?
pezezin··on Please don't rearrange our shoes when we turn up, paramedics in Japan urge
According to my Japanese GF, the elders don't understand it either. She had to setup some banking services for her dad and it was a painful mess, but doing it in person is equally annoying. So at this point it is a fucking mystery who actually likes the system and why nobody tries to change anything.
