Agreed. Also, you can try to satisfy both new and expert users. It take more thought and design, but that principle is in both Nielsen's Heuristics and Shneiderman's Golden Rules.
peterleiser··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
Wow, really? Do they limit your time on it? I would imagine that thing is in constant demand.
peterleiser··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
I had occasional access to a Bloomberg terminal 20 years ago and I still miss it. I miss it a lot. I wish they offered a cheaper option for users who only need to use it infrequently. I mean, $25,000 annually is brutal if you're not a broker-dealer.

peterleiser··on Whistleblower warns Postal Service mail ballot system has catastrophic problems
Thanks for the correction! I misread the outbound vs. return mail details. I agree with you about the IF on the cycle of delays.
peterleiser··on Whistleblower warns Postal Service mail ballot system has catastrophic problems
1 million ballots at 10,000 per batch means 100 batches. It seems they will use 400 ballots from each batch as a sample, and if anything is wrong for one of those 400 sample ballots, then the entire batch of 10,000 is sent back. Some nefarious actor could find 100 messed up ballots and include one in each sample of 400, and viola! 100 ballots invalidates 1 million votes. That's quite a system they got there.

> Three honest possibilities, and I’ll be straight with you about each

This. I don't know if the "honest answer" phrasing is part of the system prompt or alignment, but when people say "honestly" all the time I start wondering how honest they're being.

peterleiser··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
<sarc/> A website can track where your mouse pointer is, but surely they wouldn't do this on purpose just to get ad revenue.

peterleiser··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
This. My favorite is when I search for products on a website or app and the results appear in batches, with subsequent results interleaving with the previous results. So when you want to select a particular result and start to move your mouse and click, or move your finger and press, you often end up selecting something unintended because a later result pops into the location.

But LLM's passed the Turing test, so we're done, right? ;-) Seriously, though, I agree with you that people keep moving the ball.
peterleiser··on Folding Paper Globes
That they don't show how they look when folded is either bizarre, or that the end results are disappointing.
peterleiser··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
Exactly, it depends. I completely believe your experience. My wife's experience was instant bricking and Apple's warranty completely excludes liquid damage. If you have Apple Care+ they'll replace it for a fee.
peterleiser··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
I agree completely! Our Garmin Descent Mk3i dive computer smart watches are the best watches I've ever seen. They just work. You can charge it for an hour or so and it's good for 25 days. I hated having to charge previous watches every day. It has a double-tap light on/off feature with a very bright LED, four light levels, and a red light mode. It automatically starts tracking my dives and is rated to 200 meters. It can also do diver-to-diver messaging, air tank tracking, and group tracking using subwave sonar. And it has all the normal pulse ox, heart rate tracking, step tracking, sleep tracking, and smartwatch stuff. Just don't enable the one touch kill-switch ;-). Apparently it's a feature for military divers to erase their data (but sounds like a marketing gimmick).
peterleiser··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
The only IP ratings that I trust are on dive computers and dive computer watches (but I've read mixed results about Apple Watch Ultras for diving). The Garmin Descent Mk3i dive computer and smart watch is a solid performer.

Yeah, and drop your iPhone, in a ruggedized case, into 3 inches of bath water for 5 seconds from a height of one foot and then realize apple's IP68 claim is laughable.

peterleiser··on How to draw construction equipment for kids
Lol, right on! I grew up on a farm in an area where the economy centers around Ag. There used to be an annual fundraiser dinner in a nearby town (population 309) with various games for kids. One of the more popular games was to see who could hammer a nail into a board first. Good times.

California Democrats would need to choose pragmatism over party and rapidly deploy nuclear power for desalination.

But states playing no-rules hardball with each other would end up being a gigantic fail for everyone.

Definitely red. But I think in northern and central california the whole blue city / red outside cities thing is kind of like the European Coal and Steel Community. So much shared infrastructure and interdependence, and water and electricity is not evenly distributed.
peterleiser··on I researched every attempt to stop fascism in history. The success rate is 0%
Yes, just a thought experiment. I grew up on a farm in Northern California (mostly rice and tomatoes), lived in the bay area for 20 years for college and working in tech, and now live in a red state. I tell people the same thing you do about blue cities and red everything else. It's bizarre how many people in red states and blue states don't know that (and don't want to believe it).

The site says "Right now youʼre the only person with the page open, but you can cheat and just open this URL in another tab to see what itʼs like with others." I'm using Firefox and Chrome on Ubuntu. When I try a second tab or one in Firefox and one in Chrome my computer's network connection locks up (pings stop). I have to close the tabs and then pings to google.com come back at 30 seconds and slowly come back to normal. It appears that http://playground.nostrcheck.me/relay is the problem.
