peterjlee··on How Much Sleep Do Fitbit Users Really Get?
TIL Gen Z is a thing. I feel old. Also, I'm guessing most Gen Z fitbit users are in college because there's no way high school kids can wake up at 8:12AM and go to school.

peterjlee··on Infarm wants to put a farm in every grocery store
If marijuana is legalized, why bother growing it indoor?
peterjlee··on Infarm wants to put a farm in every grocery store
The plants taking up space in the grocery store have a pretty fast turnaround time while these basils will take few weeks to grow. Though I guess they could have these "farms" in some cheap warehouse then move it to the grocery store only when they're ready. Ok, this seems a bit more viable now.
peterjlee··on Infarm wants to put a farm in every grocery store
This may work for a few Whole Foods customers who pay $5 for a bottle of herb infused water but I wonder if the cost is going to be reasonable enough for most people. Real estate cost alone may trump every other cost savings. Even if that "farm" can produce 10x more per square foot from vertical farming, the real estate cost of a grocery store in a city is a lot more expensive than a farmland in the middle of no where.
peterjlee··on Be Careful with UUID or GUID as Primary Keys
>Presumably records are locked in such a way that simply knowing a URL doesn't allow you to bypass security. In case this doesn't happen. If there is a leak, with sequential ID, you run the risk of leaking the whole table. With UUID, the leak can be more limited.

Also, sequential ID may reveal some information you may not wan to share. If someone's user ID is 1234, that may be an indication the service has at least 1234 users.

peterjlee··on Electric vehicles reached 2M cars in 2016
I think guimarin meant that the fund is mostly from the sale of the oil from Norway. Since Norway is making money from selling oil, it does makes sense to diversify and invest in other industries.
peterjlee··on GitHub Major Service Outage
Funny thing is Github sometimes makes more sales after an outage because clients want to upgrade to the enterprise edition to host on their own servers.
peterjlee··on GitHub Major Service Outage
Why not just use Github Enterprise then?
peterjlee··on A hole in Finland is being prepared to contain radioactive waste for 100k years
Alpha particles are basically Helium atoms without the electrons so it's fairly easy to contain it. A sheet of paper is enough to block an alpha particle.
peterjlee··on How Anker is beating Apple and Samsung at their own accessory game
If you already know how and where to get those stuff that's great. But for most people, they just want a quality product at a reasonable price with out much thinking or research. Amazon is full of fake Apple/Samsung cables and chargers or no-name brands that might fry my phone or start a fire. So I am paying for the convenience but it is at the price I'm willing to pay because I'v been burned (not literally yet) too many times trying to be cheap..
peterjlee··on Not Hotdog App
So what you're saying is you can update the neural net to do dick or not dick without going through the App Store review?
peterjlee··on UK virtual reality firm Improbable raises $500M
SoftBank is actually not the largest telecom company in Japan. Though SoftBank does a lot more than just telecom. Telecom just happens to be the more consumer facing business. Also, SoftBank made $50 billion by investing $20M in Alibaba 17 years ago.
peterjlee··on UK virtual reality firm Improbable raises $500M
I think that's more of a branding thing. Telecom is just one of the things SoftBank does and it just happens to be more visible to consumers. Berkshire owns Geico but you wouldn't call Berkshire a insurance company.

peterjlee··on Startup CTO – Premature Scaling
My answer to most scaling question is: by the time we have that problem, we'll have a lot of customers and money so we'll hire smarter engineers with experience in scaling to figure that out. I still make sure we don't do anything stupid right now so the future engineers have more options on how to scale. Also it helps that I'm not working on a zero-revenue consumer app.
peterjlee··on Facebook Is Shutting Down VR Content Division Oculus Story Studio
Which VR headset are you using? I've tried HTC Vive and I had no problem with glasses on. I also own a Gear VR and the lenses are adjustable enough so I don't even need to wear glasses.
peterjlee··on Stupid security things
I'd argue this is one of the more secure questions compared to other common questions like "Your mother's maiden name" or "The make of your first car".
peterjlee··on Is Every Speed Limit Too Low?
In S.Korea, you never see a cop on the highway. They just have speed cameras on accident prone zones and put up camera warning signs miles ahead so people actually slow down. It seems pretty effective.
peterjlee··on Going Multi-Cloud with Google Cloud Endpoints and AWS Lambda
Wouldn't this make your service less reliable since downtime in either cloud service can cause your service to be down?
peterjlee··on Jeff Bezos Is Now the World's Second Richest Person
If you count the number of billionaire, Palo Alto alone has 13 billionaires in a town of 66,000 people. It's ranked #25 on the list of cities with most billionaires and Seattle is not even on the list.

peterjlee··on Sellers printing counterfeit books and selling under Amazon's brand
When I buy phone chargers from Amazon I intentionally avoid the manufacturer branded ones because I know it's going to be fake. I usually choose a well known 3rd party brand with good reviews.
peterjlee··on Netflix Replacing Star Ratings With Thumbs Ups and Thumbs Down
I've always liked Rotten Tomatoes ratings more than IMDB star ratings. Rotten Tomatoes rating is basically, what percentage of critics gave a thumbs up.

peterjlee··on Snap Tumbles Below IPO Opening Price as Analysts Say Sell
Facebook had $1B in profit in 2011(1), the IPO was mid 2012. Maybe it wasn't enough to justify the $100B+ valuation at IPO but at least they had their business figured out; which is not the case for Snap, yet..

peterjlee··on Images and video showing extent of Oroville dam damage
Also the emergency spillway was never used since the dam was constructed 50 years ago so nobody really knew that the erosion would be that bad.
