petergatsby··on Zoom closes account of U.S.-based Chinese activist after Tiananmen event
It's time for western companies to stop pretending it's possible to be economically successful in China whilst remaining true to their purported western values.
petergatsby··on Does Zoom use end-to-end encryption?
Article dances around and equivocates. Simple answer is "no".

Whole purpose of E2EE is to assume server is untrusted, but build a secure system anyway.

Zoom can watch & read your content whenever they want to. Full stop.

petergatsby··on Zoom’s encryption has links to China, researchers discover
I've really grown to dislike the "people who presumably consider themselves ethical defending a regime that represses free speech and expression, brutally crushes dissenters, disappears ethical doctors, is led by a 'president for life' dictator, and has literally hauled off 1M muslims to internment campus where their organs are being harvested and their culture is being erased, thing".
petergatsby··on The link between premarital sex and marriage stability
End of 5th paragraph:

>"unfortunately, the NSFG doesn’t have full data on men’s premarital sexual behavior, and in any event they recall their own marital histories less reliably than do women)"

petergatsby··on Repl.it 1.0: IDE that Grows from Playgrounds to Fullstack Apps
Repl.it is amazing -- my company builds software for higher-ed and repl.it is consistently the most oft-requested integration, in CS classes but also in STEM more broadly.

petergatsby··on Ride-hailing apps may help to curb drunk driving
Study credits Uber because specificity > vagueness. From 2011 - present Uber was responsible for vast the majority of ride-share rides: https://www.thestreet.com/story/13536061/1/uber-now-more-pop...

petergatsby··on Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around?
Stop rewarding the most hyperbolic, sensational content by propagating it the furthest, fastest. Turn tweets into "ice-berg tips"; user taps on tweet to see more, nuanced info.
petergatsby··on We should kill the 40-hour work week
Informative piece on circadian rhythm -- not sure how it justifies getting rid of the 40-hour work week.
petergatsby··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
In theory perhaps.

But anyone who's been paying attention knows, depressingly, that the stories coming out of Uber aren't new or unique.

The gross culture depicted in these kinds of posts maps pretty-much 1:1 with the wider culture of the Valley.

petergatsby··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
"As investors, we certainly want to see Uber succeed, but success must be measured in more than just returns."

-- Sure, but Uber is already a mission-driven company whose success is inversely proportional to horrible things like DUI deaths -- statements like these impede their progress

petergatsby··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
Fowler's post shed light on Uber's serious internal problems -- no doubt. But going public with a post like this erodes founder-investor trust. It's across the line.

Publicly condemning the internal culture the post depicted would be reasonable, even helpful, but trying to "expose" Uber's leadership for showmanship and posturing ('hiring' Holder who was ostensibly involved long-before the Fowler post) to mitigate the pr fallout is counterproductive. Don't kick your founder when he's down.

petergatsby··on Show HN: FOSSA – Effortlessly track and comply with open source licenses

petergatsby··on SeedRamp
It's a tiny amount indeed, but not everyone looking to start a startup has access to f&f with $20k to blow.

Their goal, for better or worse, seems to be to circumvent the relationship-building part of fundraising at the earliest stages of startup development.

petergatsby··on The Tipping Point: Most Americans No Longer Are Middle Class
I'm not sure that class-based polarization is inherently problematic. Surely some degree of inequality is an inviolable consequence of a society that values both freedom and private ownership.

Imagine an America in which the poorest families had two cars and a four-bedroom house, in a safe neighborhood with good schools. Would it then be considered problematic if Gates and Buffet became trillionaires?

The problem is poverty; the problem is that the south pole is too far south. It's problematic that many still don't have access to the fundamental Maslow's. The space between the poles isn't.

petergatsby··on The Tipping Point: Most Americans No Longer Are Middle Class
Half-full headline: "American middle class shrinks, lower-income marginally increases, upper-income up 50%".
petergatsby··on Things the media does to manufacture outrage
"World outrage" isn't a constant.

The internet means information travels faster than ever before, but also inadvertently causes "interesting things" to outpace "the truth".

Properties like Upworthy/Buzzfeed/ect. exacerbate this. Von D is right not to capitulate.

petergatsby··on Paper is Dropbox's new vision for how teams can work together
There seems to be this misperception of board members as individually highly influential on the actions of a company.

Rice was probably hired for several of the reasons that you mentioned above. Ultimately though, it's hard to make useful speculation from outside of the company, with little knowledge of the company's long-term goals.

petergatsby··on Paper is Dropbox's new vision for how teams can work together
Leaders of large companies usually have to manage a wide array of disparate and sometimes diametrically opposed interests.

The guys at Dropbox are smart; isn't the "obvious" assumption that Rice could be useful in helping them to better manage some of these interests (e.g. potentially reducing govt. snooping by facilitating a more level playing field for comms. and negotiation)?.

Aren't most reasonable people utilitarians? :)

petergatsby··on Paper is Dropbox's new vision for how teams can work together
Positions on complex, high-level issues usually don't translate into predictable behaviors in specific, real-life scenarios.

As for character, it's unclear what's unsettling about presumed utilitarians acting towards what they believe to be best outcomes.

petergatsby··on Bill Gates: ‘We Need an Energy Miracle’
I think you're right; market forces, left alone, are unlikely to realign incentives within a desirable time-frame. This seems to explain Gates' stance.

However, the creative capitalist would argue that rather than penalizing fossil fuel companies (via Carbon tax), governments would do better to reward innovators via more 'green tax credits' and like financial incentives. You get the same* overall impact, just with less political push-back and more R&D, driven BY capitalism.

And by the way, Gates invented "Creative Capitalism" (https://www.fpsct.org/uploaded/faculty/johnsonc/U_S_History/...).

petergatsby··on Paper is Dropbox's new vision for how teams can work together
It's tempting to criticize the decision to hire Rice based on weak spots in her track record, but we should resist the urge.

In reality, Rice could've been recruited because of her relationships with top govt. security officials, in the hopes of facilitating more conversations, in which Dropbox has more leverage, to push back against mass surveillance.

If something like this isn't the case, then firing Rice wouldn't be a resolution anyway.
