I have seen tens of counter examples to this in the West. Men often get more confident, more stable, and more stable as they get older, and the world itself simply treats them more respectfully.

> What motivation will Americans have to fight and die for Taiwan?

Well if the Yanks are smart, the second it becomes a US state you strongly encourage two way migration so there are a bunch of square-jawed, grass-fed, All American kids living there that the US press can get exited about. Jack, Diane, and Tyrone getting shot at by the PLA is going to be a Big Fucking Deal.

Heck, if I was Taiwan I’d stop spending money on defence and just start spending money giving free university tuition to Americans.

How much are the fees for converting to Bitcoin, the recipient converting from Bitcoin, and the transaction costs? TransferWise is quoting me an effective all-in price[0] of £1.98 to send someone in Brazil £100 of my hard-earned Sterling. I’m struggling to believe you’re getting Bitcoin in or out of fiat for less than 2-5% a go, and transaction cost is ~$15, so ballpark this is costing $25?

0: £100 -> 729.83, where Google says it “should” be 744.61;

I am curious about this. If Uncle Sam serves Coinbase notice that it considers the contents of XYZ wallet to be stolen goods, then haven't they created lower-value coloured coins, and won't other exchanges start creating lists of those pretty quickly?

My understanding is that you aren’t sharing a general connection to the internet, you’re specifically letting Amazon devices tunnel some data back to Amazon’s parent servers. I’d expect data caps to be some of the worst in the US. Poorer countries had their internet infrastructure put in much more recently. That said, I also suspect you can’t just look at mean (average) speed to get a feel for that.

Sanctions against key people are probably more effective while not causing too much anti-American sentiment in the general population or a rally around the flag effect. Hard to rile up the people because a dodgy oligarch can no longer keep his roubles in a London bank, where Babushka Svetlana freezing to death 'cuz the Yankees cut the gas is a martyrdom event.

> They've made America look quite incompetent the past decade or so

This itself is American propoganda; the strategy is to be absolutely all over your opponents, knowing that they can't complain about it for fear of looking weak, while complaining loudly about how their meagre attempts are the end of the world, getting public and Congressional support for more spending.

Before the Snowden leaks, someone suggesting the US had the SIGINT capacities they actually did have would have be laughed out of serious circles as a crank, and you better believe they haven't been sat still over the 8 years since.

"nation-state" is not just a fancy infosec word for country, and there's some debate as to whether the USA constitutes an actual nation state, rather than a state.

You do not understand the concept:

I decide I want to try a bit of "something new", and I pay someone to induce a Capgras delusion in me. At which point, my wife seems like an imposter. I wish to have sex with this new person, and I am also sure my real wife has given me permission to, prior to this. You can tell me as much as you like that it's "really" my wife, but, in my delusion, I am quite sure it's just someone who looks like her, and delightfully and consentfully have sex with the imposter new person -- who is giving their consent the whole time -- with all the thrill that entails. Afterwards, the delusion wears off, and I realise it was just sex with my wife. Everyone has consented at every point to this.

> Several patients have presented with transient "Capgras delusion", a psychiatric disorder in which a person believes someone close to them has been replaced by an impostor.

> "It's quite disturbing because, for instance, a patient would tell his wife: 'Sorry ma'am you cannot get in bed, I'm a married man' and even if the wife gives her name, he'd say: 'You're not the real one,'" Dr Marrero says.

You could spice up a lot of marriages if you could harmlessly cause Capgras delusion for a few hours
