peteretep··on Imperial Delusions
Do you believe it was an empire under the Mughals? If so, what's changed?
peteretep··on Imperial Delusions
Are we saying a country with 1.4bn people, 22 official languages, 5 major religions, over 100 ethnic groups isn’t an empire? Before the Raj, most of it was the Mughal Empire (1500-1800). Before that, the Delhi Sultanate, pretty definitely an empire (1200-1500). The only thing missing is the nomenclature.

If you don't think the goal was violent insurrection then what, specifically, do you think the people were doing there?

They were protesting just fine outside of Congress, why did they go into congress? Why were they trying to find Nancy Pelosi? Why did the Capitol police think they needed to use deadly force?

I spent the first ten years of my programming career without a degree, like you. I got a SoftEng MSc at 30. It was worth it. Sometimes we just don't know what we don't know.

And they got Capone for tax evasion. Brushing off a conviction under 18 U.S. Code § 1752 -- which seems to be what people are being charged[0] with -- as "petty nonsense" is itself misleading, as it's the part of law that deals with "PRESIDENTIAL AND PRESIDENTIAL STAFF ASSASSINATION, KIDNAPPING, AND ASSAULT"[1]

> Actual public safety is an afterthought

Are we talking about the people who participated in a violent insurrection against the US, or is this another group?

If you want to have nice things (eg: a democracy) then you can’t be letting people who commit some mild treason off just because they’re dumbasses who got caught up in the moment.

The next yahoo who decides they want to try and block the peaceful transfer of power needs to 100% understand that they will be prosecuted.

The best time to have your email on a personal domain was ten years ago, the second best time is now.

Trivial to register a domain, setup Fastmail, and then download all your Gmail one-off and then ongoing. Over the next year or two, correct the email address people have.

peteretep··on Bank of England to crack down on 'secretive' cloud computing services
Cloud computing feels like one area we have fantastic competition in, even if there are only 3 major players (with one or two smaller ones). Feature and price competition between AWS and Azure is fierce, and if you’re dumb enough to have any trust at all in Google as a supplier then there’s even GCP.

> some get paided per interview

I guess over a large enough number you’ll find people doing anything, but with a long history with the recruitment industry in a couple of countries, I’ve never seen this. With good reason too: there is no end to the number of fake developer CVs I could generate.

> some you have to pay

In many countries that’s illegal, and I’m also yet to see this in the Real World

That’s a weird framing. One party would introduce single-payer in a heartbeat, the other demonises it. Let’s not pretend we’re talking about “government” as a whole here, rather than the GOP
