peter_retief··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Sure, buildings were demolished, is that unusual in a war zone?
peter_retief··on Malleable software: Restoring user agency in a world of locked-down apps (2025)
I also did not know it was a term..
peter_retief··on Malleable software: Restoring user agency in a world of locked-down apps (2025)
I have been trying to promote open source sw for as long as I can remember but peoplel like my wife who is a social worker says it is too clunky and gets in the way, recently I have been vide coding with apps on Raspberry Pi's and just maybe that gap is slowly starting to close.

I for one am watching this space with a lot of interest.

peter_retief··on Ink and Switch interactive homepage
This is amazing I am so grateful to hear about it.

I gave been going in few similar things on my own with localbox

peter_retief··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
I use both (also Headscale)
peter_retief··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
Yet so many developers do not know about it.
peter_retief··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
I have been using CF tunnels for quite some time, very useful if you want to ingest mail on a local server without a public IP and hosting anything locally.

They are providing this for free up to a point, I wonder if all developers are aware of this amazing offering?

apps running on vpn mesh can be really useful
peter_retief··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
It is very hard work and with multilayer boards and surface mount components it is not really a hobby for me anymore, maybe with AI it can be again?
peter_retief··on We found a division by zero bug in FFmpeg with a vibecoded fuzzer
True and funny.

Bugs days are numbered with AI!
peter_retief··on AI-powered email agent that syncs your emails via IMAP
AI-powered email agent that syncs your emails via IMAP and provides intelligent analysis Interesting to analyse 20+ years of my gmail account. Fork the repo and make it better, this is created with AI
peter_retief··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
good luck, nice idea, agents are fun and a bit scary sometimes!
peter_retief··on Premier league bans gambling sponsors
Gambling feeds on human misery, it should never be normalized, they made the right decision.
peter_retief··on Why the future is local app
I am using the older version of raspberry pi 3 B+ to host mail and web services locally behind firewalls. There is a use case here for developing for remote areas that have unreliable internet and power. Still a way to go but there is something in place. This site is a beta running from my lounge at home. https://localboxmail.co.za/software.html

My son wants to throw it away, I want to at least try and reuse it.

Any suggestions for an ancient Chromebook?

Have one that is managed by a school from 10 years ago and they failed to release the device.

I am a fan of alpine Linux which i think may work well on an old Chromebook.

Any suggestions/links welcome

peter_retief··on Teach yourself programming in ten years (1998)
I have mixed feelings about this, I hate the loss of slow "discovery" and the warm fuzzy feeling when you understand something that used to be Greek to you (unless of course you are Greek) The piles of programming books, sadly many unread but admired on the shelf from afar. Now I create programs in languages I only vaguely understand and run remote servers without even logging in, it feels slightly shameful but then we are all complicit
peter_retief··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
Absolutely, I give my agents access to MCP/API and they can check logs and setup checks for potential problems and whatever else
peter_retief··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
It is a really interesting debate, it seems to be a type of abstraction at least, with an interface as a natural language instead of a typed schema.
peter_retief··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
Neither really solved the problem, reality is too nuanced, AI fills the gap.
peter_retief··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
wow this is murky water, I love the abstraction of AI, I feel like the director of an orchestra creating beautiful music in code.

I always resented having to write the same code over and over, now automated by AI

but also support free and open software, as all knowledge should be

peter_retief··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
I got a bill for about R900 for just having a look at some of their services?

I will never use them again, they are huge so probably dont really care about small users

I have actually replaced most of what they do with Raspberry Pi's using cloudflare tunnels

peter_retief··on G# – A modern .NET language with Go, Kotlin, and Swift ergonomics
Yes even I have used C#

My anti MS is a reflex from many years of torment!

peter_retief··on G# – A modern .NET language with Go, Kotlin, and Swift ergonomics
I love Go but am not a fan of .NET

Have to ask what is the point of .NET is it even needed being the navel gazing MS fraternity?

peter_retief··on The Tower Keeps Rising
It is a great analogy.

Also quite like Linus Torvalds likening of AI to a compiler.

He argues that calling AI the "author" of code is the equivalent of saying a compiler wrote your code.

He views AI as an incredibly powerful productivity layer, much like the historic progression from machine code to assemblers, and then to higher-level compilers!

peter_retief··on Designing and assembling my first PCB
I have made boards but never actually used them (the delay between need and supply is too long for me)

I wish I could 3d print a board with all its components - instant gratification (which incidentally was one of my half baked projects)

peter_retief··on A road to Lisp: Why Lisp
Fair enough.
peter_retief··on A road to Lisp: Why Lisp
The real test of a programming language is its readabilty.

I looked at lisp many times and it just doesn't do it for me.

peter_retief··on Workers Cache
Could this apply to workers that ingest email?
