peter422··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
So you are vehemently anti-youtube, yet it still sounds like you get tons of content from it.

Why not get your content from ad-free platforms?

peter422··on Data centres account for between 1.5% and 2% of global electricity consumption
The larger your footprint in the cloud is, the larger incentive you have to make it more efficient though. I think it’s a somewhat self-correcting problem.

The biggest players are running highly, highly efficient software.

peter422··on What saved the ‘miracle house’ in Lahaina?
Metal is much more expensive as an upfront cost.

It may pay off in the long term but most homeowners don't think in a 50 year time horizon.

peter422··on The Plumber Problem
Modern industrial farming "wastes" tons of energy to get their desired outputs.

It's possible that the machines were advanced at some things but something that human bodies produced was something they couldn't directly synthesize.

peter422··on Bankman-Fried used $100M in stolen FTX funds for political donations, US says
I'm pretty confident the bribe money was under scrutiny the entire time (see campaign finance charges), and his bail was revoked for unrelated reasons.
peter422··on Cruise blames Outside Lands for driverless car traffic fiasco in San Francisco
Wait until you hear about what happens when it's the driver who is drunk and not the pedestrian.

Autonomous cars can be far from perfect and still safer than human drivers, who all consistently overestimate how safe they are.

peter422··on Show HN: WordPress, Ghost alternative at $29/Year
The fact that any business is sustainable at this price point is not a relevant point, it might have been a bad choice for them too. What you are offering is also a lot more complicated.

Not to mention it’s in the vertical of blogging which has been around for 20 years, in which your offering is very similar to every other alternative, and there are many well known free alternatives.

If you have the technical skill to make a service this complicated, make something that people value more than $2 a month, and make something that hasn’t been made 100 times before. Execution is more important than idea only if the idea isn’t terrible.

peter422··on Show HN: WordPress, Ghost alternative at $29/Year
Given the amount of customer service per user, feature support, technical support and dev-ops that will be required to run this, I doubt there is any way this business could be sustainable at $29/year/user. Not to mention how you’d actually need to grow via marketing.

If I were you I would stop on this idea immediately and come up with somewhere where the average user would expect to pay $50-$1000 per month for the service. I don’t think this is a good vertical to get into. Your competition are both better than you at the bottom of the market (free alternatives) and the top of the market and there is very little left for you. And even if you do get tens or hundreds of users, it will be just as unsustainable and you’ll also have the guilt when you decide to shut it down and kick all your users off.

peter422··on Threads users down by more than a half
By this logic Twitter should also be growing, as it’s even better than threads in terms of content.

Yet not only is Twitter not growing but it’s shrinking.

I think your expectations for success in this vertical are off.

peter422··on Study suggests isometric exercises best for reducing blood pressure
It’s more of a hybrid exercise but “pause squats”, in which you hold the weight at the bottom position before coming back up are a very good variation of a standard squat.
peter422··on Study suggests isometric exercises best for reducing blood pressure
Dr. Stuart McGill (PHD, written multiple books about back health), strongly promotes isometric exercises for back health.

However at the end of the day stability only gets you so far, since we are always moving, so it really makes sense to combine isometric exercises with other ones to get a robust exercise plan for whatever goals each person has.

peter422··on Community Note correcting Musk’s anti-vax tweet mysteriously disappears
https://academic.oup.com/jid/advance-article-abstract/doi/10...

Here is recent, high quality one, but there are many more (and some with conflicting results - but to my eye the best studies all point to similar conclusions).

peter422··on Community Note correcting Musk’s anti-vax tweet mysteriously disappears
There have been numerous studies showing that omicron severity is very likely equivalent to prior strains.

The decrease in serious illness is due to prior immunity and vaccination.

Though it’s obviously a hard thing to prove either way. But certainly I do not think it should be assumed that omicron is inherently more mild.

peter422··on Google is already pushing WEI into Chromium
It’s like having the “I’m not a robot” button embedded in your web browser.
peter422··on Wind and solar will be 25% of U.S. generating capacity within three years
Also I’d assume the people who physically install rooftop solar are different than the people doing utility scale projects.

We should be doing both!

peter422··on I am dying of squamous cell carcinoma, and potential treatments are out of reach
It is against medical ethics for the placebo not to be the current standard of care, and experimentally it must be… If you can’t beat the current standard of care then your drug isn’t effective.
peter422··on New in Chrome 115
I don’t work at Google and don’t use ad blockers because I want the sites I visit to get paid.

Anyways, all things being equal, I’d prefer more relevant ads.

peter422··on Don't Take VC Funding – It Will Destroy Your Company
I remember when "silicon valley" came out, and after watching a few episodes I thought it was so stupid and unrealistic... This isn't how startups operated.

Then I talked with other people in the startup world who said it was a perfect match.

That's when I realized that I just worked at competent places.

peter422··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
So you do have a mysticism about what it is like to go to Harvard.

Regardless of how selective they are with admissions it also doesn't mean that a large chunk of the people they rejected wouldn't have also done fine there.

Arguably it's much easier to get good grades at Harvard due to grade inflation if you are a good student (which you are by definition if you are at the top of your class) than at state schools.

peter422··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Your cut off makes no sense, because Harvard is about potential. If we had a perfect, balanced, equitable test for academic potential than of course we'd use it, but we don't. So you can't just use the distributions about existing tests to prove your point.

If you truly think that the top 2.5% of black students would be "out of place" at Harvard then you have a completely invented mysticism of what it means to go to Harvard.

peter422··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
You don't believe there are 300 multi-generation American black students per year that wouldn't be utterly out of place at Harvard?

Don't throw out numbers like that unless you are willing to back them up, because your claim seems completely insane.

peter422··on Try: run a command and inspect its effects before changing your live system
Just run the whole operation in a transaction and verify whatever you need to verify before committing.
peter422··on Google no longer automatically indexes websites?
If the site is so good other people should naturally link to it over time and the situation will work itself out.
peter422··on Google no longer automatically indexes websites?
There are an infinite number of URLs on the internet, Google obviously cannot crawl and index them all. They choose what to crawl and index based on mainly site reputation and inbound links, just like they used to 20 years ago.

If they aren't crawling or indexing your site, then link to it from a high reputation place.

peter422··on It could cost $21B to clean up California’s oil sites, study finds
You don't need to take their comment seriously... After all they didn't make the counterargument and therefore it's a overly biased point and thus not useful in any way.
peter422··on California spent $17B on homelessness – it’s not working
Your argument is that an immigrant would rather be homeless in the US than housed in their home country?

Almost no data backs that up.

peter422··on Automatic emergency braking should become mandatory, feds say
Every possible change to a car’s safety system will cause some deaths and save others… look at airbags.

The aggregate stats are the most important things to look at, especially for something like AEB which has the ability to save pedestrians, which as of late are getting mowed down more and more frequently.

peter422··on Automatic emergency braking should become mandatory, feds say
Yes everybody here seems to be ignoring that car accidents are the leading cause of deaths for children and young adults… car safety is not a solved problem!
peter422··on Ask HN: How does archive.is bypass paywalls?
Google gives precise details about how to verify their bot is crawling your site and how to denote what content is paywalled and what isn’t.
peter422··on Elizabeth Holmes ordered to pay $452M restitution
It's not always possible to prove criminal negligence or malice from incompetence.

There are a lot of well intentioned people doing things that directly or indirectly harm people. We generally grade people on intentions and not results.

Other countries have different strategies and those also come with trade offs.
