peteey··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
The problem may be deficit spending. Part of the budget is paid for with debt. I don't think you can auto-approve a raise in the debt ceiling.
peteey··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
You are giving credit where it isn't due. Are these loans conditional on a good credit score?
peteey··on Big Cities No Longer Deliver for Low-Skill Workers
Agreed, and the increased prices are for existing drugs. We are not seeing an increase in cost due to innovation. Price increases are caused by companies charging more year after year for the same pill.
peteey··on Guy Says He's the First Person to Attempt Editing His DNA with CRISPR
Only changes to the gamete cells (sperm and eggs) will move on to the next generation.

You can change the DNA of specific cells. A change in you skin cell's DNA will not propagate to your bone cells. The skin cell has instructions to make a bone cell, but skin cells do not make use of that part of the code.

peteey··on Kenya will start teaching Chinese to elementary school students from 2020
How are you judging positivity?

Classroom time should be spent on the most important things. Learning for the sake of learning is meaningless. There is no value in knowing how many dots are on the ceiling. The classroom time could been spent learning something more meaningful. For example, cursive writing should not be taught.

I would suggest only praising skills that help a child economically or make life fulfilling. I do not consider learning different ways to say a word as fulfilling as history, art, or philosophy.

peteey··on Fundamental rule of traffic: building new roads makes people drive more (2015)
Yes, it is a problem. I can't recall the details, but I have heard compelling arguments why waiting in lines is awful from an economic perspective. You might enjoy hearing an economist's perspective on time.

Poor people would likely benefit overall from more efficient use of roads.

Interstate roads allowed people to live far from things they need (e.g. jobs). Your suggestion is backwards, people should be located near things, not the other way around. Roads with no fees have distorted supply and demand. The market can't function.

peteey··on Fridge 0.2
> A cow consumes, worst case ~80 gallons per day.

I assume most of the water needed to sustain cows is spent on the plants they eat.

peteey··on Electric scooters are causing injuries and accidents
The pedestrian won't hear the scooter coming.
peteey··on Electric scooters are causing injuries and accidents
Your suggestion may not be that simple. Consider Florida statute s. 316.2065 (11) "No person upon roller skates, or riding in or by means of any coaster, toy vehicle, or similar device, may go upon any roadway except while crossing a street on a crosswalk;"

Laws generally exist for a reason, and some reason forbids scooters from the bike lanes. Bike lanes are for bikes only.

peteey··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
The law says a lot of things. I'm ok with short sellers losing their shirts regardless.
peteey··on Suspect in YouTube Shooting Angry That Her Videos Had Been 'De-Monetized'
There is merit to making guns harder to find.

A crime motivated by anger might not happen if a few days pass while searching for a weapon. Passion fades with time

Effort is also a factor. Most people I have worked with will completely fail at a task if it requires them to get up from their desk and talk to someone. Finding a gun on the black market seems significantly harder than a shopping trip to Walmart

peteey··on UN: Facebook has turned into a beast in Myanmar
Someone hasn't read the Old Testament. God mellowed out when he had a kid, but before that he smote entire cities. Sometimes God did it himself. Sometimes God ordered Israelites to commit genocide.
peteey··on Illinois pension benefits have grown six times faster than state revenues
401Ks and IRAs are good for retirement if and only if the economy doesn't collapse. 2008 saw +50% of the DOW's value "go away". Some individual retirement portfolios lost more.
peteey··on Section 230: A Key Legal Shield for Facebook, Google Is About to Change
>freedom protects your right to sexually exploit underage girls

That's not what he said or implied at all

peteey··on A fork on GitHub is no fork
Is fork part of git? I don't see it mentioned in the official documentation: git-scm.com

Fork seems like some feature cloud storage services invented.

peteey··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Florida Says Yes, but It’s Not So Simple
Florida is trying to act early. Ending daylight saving time is becoming popular throughout the US. Florida's tourism market would reap more gains if we fixed the clocks with an extra hour of sunlight in the evenings.
peteey··on Lost Art of Bending Over: How Other Cultures Spare Their Spines
I give my workouts thought so those are proper form. When I pick something up, I don't consider anything and curl my back.
peteey··on Utility poles
Ground is literally the ground. The Earth makes a good return path. The hot wire is going positive and negative relative to the land you stand on.
peteey··on Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Steps Aside, Focuses on Initialized Capital
Some people like low effort repetitive content. I don't think its good, but there is a market for that type of entertainment.
peteey··on Telegram removed from the App Store for 'inappropriate content'
News is free on the web and free as an app. You are not making a distinction. I paid nothing for my NPR and BBC apps.
peteey··on Commission fines Qualcomm €997 million for abuse of dominant market position
The mods should not do anything. The title of the post closely resembles the title of the article.
peteey··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2017)
You probably want to change "work on internet censorship" to "bypass internet censorship". I was confused by you bragging about censorship until I checked your website.
peteey··on PocketBeagle – A $25 open-source USB-key-fob computer

peteey··on PocketBeagle – A $25 open-source USB-key-fob computer
EEPROM allows you to write individual bytes. Flash requires you to write many bytes (~256) at once.

Some flash chips compensate by including a small amount of RAM to handle read-modify-write operations.
