peteey··on Why has the hearing aid industry gone completely digital?
Is that a problem of focus or hearing?
peteey··on Day Trading for a Living?
The paper's claim is "virtually impossible".

The post's title is click bait.

peteey··on Americans' fear of losing their jobs grows
The cynicism is uncalled for.

The culture of places are not so well defined in America. It is a new nation of immigrants. Europeans may have lived in the same towns for hundreds or thousands of years. American is less than 250 years old.

Americans identify as individuals. An individual is identified by personal accomplishments or work. Alternatively, a group identity might define a person by location or family name. The root question "who are you?" is asked depending on what approach you take. Identity is a subjective social construct; neither approach is more right than the other.

peteey··on Recognizing the signs of disruption in our urban habitat
Being treated equally may seem like a punishment when you've become accustomed to special privilege.

Suppose property owners have been benefiting from the tax shelters for 10 years. That was the payoff. Don't dally around asking what their next hand out should be. They've been riding the gravy train for years. Now the perks need to end. Welcome to a level playing field.

Florida lacks an income tax too. Property taxes are distorted due to a law called Save Our Homes. SOH limits increasing assessed value of home prices to inflation (Consumer Price Index) or 3%, whichever is lower.

This mostly shift the tax burden to new home buyers and renters.

You get odd effects like in 2009, when property values dramatically fell due to the market bubble bursting, taxes actually went up because the assessed values were so much lower then the just market value.

peteey··on Cryptic, allusive messages from Hong Kong's wealthiest tycoon
Hong Kong is consistently ranked as one of the freest societies. Casting HK in a bad light implies more daunting things about the rest of the world.
peteey··on People love working remotely
Agile and stand up meetings get a bad rap when poorly performing companies adopt the practices. There's no such thing as having just half of your house on fire. If a fundamental business element like customers or leadership is missing, everything else will be bad. Waterfall and agile methods are equally damned when the something else is causing a company to under perform.
peteey··on Key Negotiation of Bluetooth Attack
Bluetooth physically requires some time to pass between communication. 2^56 seconds is 2 billion years. I doubt you can try more than 100 times a second.
peteey··on The subversive messages hidden in The Wizard of Oz
What does the good witch of the North represent?
peteey··on Yield curve is blaring loudest recession warning since 2007
I would not expect a slowdown in manufacturing to be detrimental to the US because Microsoft, Visa, and Facebook do not make physical things. Much of the US economy's value is in IP.
peteey··on The Loneliness Epidemic
Offering strangers liquid drugs in hopes of "some action" was probably creepy back in the day too. Alcohol and hookup culture are not mutually exclusive to loneliness.
peteey··on Google Protest Leader Leaves
I believe the strong term "evil" is only used because Google's motto is "don't be evil".

Not everyone has the freedom to instantly change jobs. The world might be a better place if employees had the right to whistle blow without being threatened with homelessness or fleeing to Russia.

Unions striking and protesting against their companies for better wages seems acceptable. Why is protesting for ethical reasons without quitting faux pas?

peteey··on Against Disenchantment
Science is not always available to repel superstition. Nutrition is the convenient thing to fixate on, but the body is far more complex and is essential to understand. Consider that the dangers of putting petrol in a diesel engine is not explained by understanding the fuel alone. It doesn't help that our bodies vary greatly compared to the number of engine models.

We should be free to dismiss magic as imaginative whimsy without hard science. "Not uh" is a valid counter argument.

peteey··on I Grew Up Gifted, but My Life Didn’t Turn Out the Way I Expected
I challenge the distinction between hard work and smart work. You cannot be smart without hard work. Amassing knowledge and mental ability requires years of effort and work. It is easier for gifted/clever people, but not inherent.

gifted =/= smart

peteey··on Buyer's Remorse: High Debt and Low Pay Leave Some College Grads Rueful
I did not know electrical engineers did mostly design work until my junior year. A professor was flabbergasted when I asked about learning more about soldering techniques, as if I would end up working on an assembly line.

My major was a lucky whim.

peteey··on GitHub Sponsors
We are ignoring something between whales and normal people. I believe the $2 trend is due to the expectation of subscription services. People see $2 as a reasonable exchange of what Netflix or Spotify would charge (for an individual show).

Average patrons might be willing to donate $100 a year if they understood they were allowing art or research to exist instead of just paying for market-rate viewership. This type of donation would allow 1,000 dedicated followers to support a niche cause instead of the lowest common denominator stuff creators like Pewdiepie has to put out to amass millions of fans.

peteey··on Tesla's solar factory is exporting most of its cells
>excess battery production

Tesla buys batteries from Panasonic. Why would Tesla have excess supply?

peteey··on Death rates from energy production per TWh
The post is irresponsibly spreading fear based on imagination.
peteey··on Does Employment-Based Insurance Make US Medical Care Unfair and Inefficient?
The bleeding example makes costs seems like random accidents, but most spending is on genetic illness and the elderly.

A lifetime supply of insulin is much more expensive than setting a broken bone. We are not all equally likely to have cancer or respiratory disease.

peteey··on Riding alone in a car is an increasingly unaffordable luxury
Not all transport time is "wasted". Consider the difference of a normal vs congested road. Suppose a trip would normally take 15 minutes, and takes 25 minutes in congestion.

The 10 minute difference is the waste. The 15 minutes is some acceptable transit time you agree we must have. This discussion is centered around the waste.

Claiming there is some essential traffic time is a straw man argument

peteey··on Jack Dorsey Is Gwyneth Paltrow for Silicon Valley
Are being healthy and not unhealthy the same thing? For example not smoking is "not unhealthy" in the sense it does not hurt your lungs, but I would not consider standing around not smoking as being healthy. Similarly drinking water is not unhealthy compared to the harms of soda and dehydration.

The traditional form of healthy is avoiding harm; avoiding less than normal health. Ice baths and fasting seem like an attempt to be above the baseline normal healthy. Its an addition instead of avoiding a subtraction.

peteey··on Why Drug Prices Keep Rising Despite Congress's Efforts
US forced insurance seems like part of the problem. From the article, the response to "when did drug prices ratchet ups" was "when prescription drug coverage became part of Medicare"

This singular problem point was completely ignored by the rest of the article and in the proposed solutions.

It seems like no matter what drug companies charge, our government MUST pay it. And citizens not covered by the government MUST buy health insurance. The ACA says it is illegal for you not to buy coverage; if you don't there is a fine. If you to not pay this fine (individual responsibility tax), you go to jail.

The case of Nelene Fox shows that HMOs MUST pay for anything, even unreasonable procedures for terminally ill patients.

How can the market function when you MUST PAY?

peteey··on The Difference Between ‘Violet’ and ‘Purple’ (2015)
Colors are not purely spectral. Pink and brown are colors that must be mixtures. Black is no color. Normally I wouldn't care, but the point of article is the difference between mixtures and wavelength. The point of the post is semantics.

Some child just learning the colors gets a free pass, but if you put up a website to explain something and its wrong, I think its reasonable to "aggressively" say so.

peteey··on The Difference Between ‘Violet’ and ‘Purple’ (2015)
Monitors produce a mixture of blue and red. This is the definition of purple. Our monitors are not capable of producing violet. There is no "kind of" violet to discuss.

The article deceptively passes off purple for violet, and shows magenta for contrast. It is wrong.

peteey··on Facebook Still Tracks People on Yelp, Duolingo, Indeed
The ad-networks will always try to take extra value regardless of dependence. Ads exist on paid services. My Economist subscription requires me to swipe away Oracle ads. The last flight I was on tried to sign me up for a credit card. No matter what a customer pays, there will always be a temptation to make a bit more money by showing an ad.

Ads will exist until people are empowered to block them.

peteey··on Google Moves to Address Wage Equity, and Finds It’s Underpaying Many Men
As a man, I have relied primary on two people at different points in my life; my wife and my mom. Their loss is not my gain. This is a team game.
peteey··on Cancer Complications: Confusing Bills, Maddening Errors And Endless Phone Calls
The socialization of the insurance market puts the citizens paying at the mercy of the healthcare industry.

Wouldn't it make more sense to socialize the healthcare industry itself? Our tax dollars pay for much of the education and hospitals. Are we entitled to ownership?

peteey··on Small World: The Tiny House Trend
>debt

The concept of "tiny house" romanticizes a small budget. Poorer people get smaller houses.

peteey··on Something mysterious is blocking car key fobs from working in an Alberta town
This does not start the car. Starting is a fairly important step.
