petargyurov··on Explaining Huffman’s Impossible Pyramid
I didn't really get it at first, in fact, I might still not be getting it, but if you draw a line from A to C, then you can see that the triangle ABC will not be similar to DEF... when it should be? I don't know.
petargyurov··on Ask HN: How to build a light weight personal blog?
Jekyll + GitHub Pages = Static blog with free hosting

You could substitute Jekyll for other supported frameworks.

Pros:

* Markdown (so super flexible)

* Git as the backbone (free CRM, free history)

* Customisable (if you know how to code)

* Free templates

Cons:

* Jekyll is a bit of a pain on Windows but should be fine on Linux/Mac

* Images might not load super quick from GitHub's servers

* You need to know basic Git

petargyurov··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
If you are looking to do some collective good, consider a wildlife conservation project.

I created a GUI wrapper around a popular AI model for object detection for wildlife conservation [0]

The idea is that most ecologists don't have the technical expertise to run such models, so making their life easier is an important task. The use of AI also saves them loads of time. The project was born when I got in touch with New Zealand's Department of Conservation for volunteering opportunities.

I haven't had time to continue working on this; help is welcomed!

> ML to identify gorillas by their unique nose prints

Really cool stuff. I wonder if face detection is sufficient too? It has been proven to work for brown bears [0].

I have also been doing some open source work [1] to democratise object detection in this space but I haven't had the time to make improvements to the project in a while.

petargyurov··on Show HN: Voiceliner – Capture structured braindumps on the go
The link you posted is a 7 year old question; is the information still relevant? Surely copying the original audio is enough of a workaround?

Not a mobile dev so could be wrong.

petargyurov··on Be curious, not judgmental
I can strongly recommend the book "The Scout Mindset" by Julia Galef.

It's not only an excellent discussion/lesson on exactly this, it's also an incredibly well written book.

petargyurov··on Advent of Code Surveys: Results
Interesting to see VS Code gain more users each year whilst other popular editors/IDEs lose users.

Not necessarily an indication of actual user base; could just be that more/less devs of each "group" are deciding to participate.

Side note; I decided to move from PyCharm to VSCode and honestly, I am starting to miss PyCharm. Yes, it's sluggish to boot but it handles Python so much better: better inspection, highlighting, better Git integration (3-way merge!) and better tooling all round.

I find myself having to mess around in VSC's settings.json for far too long, scrambling to find the relevant extensions documentation because god forbid you include all the keywords somewhere easy to find in the IDE! And to top it all off, there's currently some annoying bugs with error highlighting in VSC that make it a pain to use.

petargyurov··on Show HN: I made a modern web UI for Wikipedia
Looks pretty nice! I installed it and gave it a go. It definitely looks neater on the landing page demo than it does on my monitor; I suspect it's because my monitor is running at 1440p.

Also, it appears a little broken on maths-heavy pages. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourier_series.

Multi-line equations get displaced by the pictures on the side, some even appearing with a horizontal scroll bar. Lots of strange white-space in some equations.

petargyurov··on Ask HN: What browser extensions are a must-have in 2021?
Sure. You now have time for 4x more meetings! Enjoy!

petargyurov··on Timeline of the Human Condition
This is awesome. I've been wanting to make an illustrated all-time timeline infographic that doesn't use AD/BC nonsense. I think I'll use this as a starting point!
petargyurov··on 5 side projects in 6 years, earning $0
I fully agree with you but here's my take on why this is a phenomenon:

1. People like making money when they shouldn't be; we live under the pretense that the only way to earn money is via your day job. A side-hustle makes things exciting. It's like finding treasure.

2. Pair the above with the rise of social media and the lifestyles people portray on there: success, money, etc.

3. Perhaps there is an actual movement away from "normal" jobs, leading to a mentality shift in which people simply want to be financially independent.

petargyurov··on Show HN: Felingua – Language practice by writing pages and reviewing flashcards
Looks interesting. I am also learning Spanish at the moment and have tried translating children's stories as a form of exercise but it is a bit of an effort. My biggest problem is that I am never 100% sure whether the translation service I use, Deepl, is accurate enough.

For instance, a translation service won't advise me on whether the preterite or imperfect was more suitable, and in fact, that sort of nuance is often conflated to the same translation in English.

I haven't signed up yet, but I like the look of it so far.

petargyurov··on Windows 11’s first update makes AMD CPU performance even worse
Obligatory "I switched to Linux" comment.

But no seriously, after having Windows as my main OS for my entire life I finally switched to Linux (Pop!_OS) a few months ago.

Got tired of nonsensical UI decisions, terrible search functionality, user-hostile behaviour, privacy issues, ads... aaaah! That's not what an OS should be like!

petargyurov··on Conservation Directory – A list of companies in conservation technology
This wasn't made by me but I am somewhat acquainted with the creators.

As a software dev who's looking for a job in more "green" field (climate change, wildlife conservation, etc), I found this quite useful.

petargyurov··on I got multiple FAANG offers in Europe
Anyone else a bit surprised by the shotgun-like application approach? I have learned from past mistakes to only apply for companies in which I think I will be happy doing what they do. I can't fathom applying to 400 different companies (but then again I also can't see myself wanting to work at FAANG)
petargyurov··on Reining in the thundering herd: Getting to 80% CPU utilization with Django
> Which exacerbated another problem: uWSGI is so confusing. It’s amazing software, no doubt, but it ships with dozens and dozens of options you can tweak.

I am glad I am not the only one. I've had so many issues with setting up sockets, both with gevent and uWSGI, only to be left even more confused after reading the documentation.

petargyurov··on Lab-made dairy products are now a reality
> Milk is substitutable. You loose the taste for it in a year or so. Cheese? I have tried many vegan cheeses. They all suck.

I've been trying to make more environmentally conscious food choices: pretty much cut out meat, I didn't drink milk in the first place, but cheese... cheese is my nemesis.

petargyurov··on American parents are sending their kids to 'Russian math' (2017)
I couldn't actually remember what time we started in the UK (it was either 7 or 8) so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. It was probably closer to 8.
petargyurov··on American parents are sending their kids to 'Russian math' (2017)
I am Bulgarian. I moved to the UK when I was 12. I had to join primary school halfway through Year 6 (the last year of primary school).

The level of mathematics shocked me. They were still learning factorisation, something I had learned years ago. It was a breeze.

Of course, in secondary school (ages 12-18) the content eventually caught up with me. Part of me wishes I could have somehow kept studying the Bulgarian way.

What is surprising even still is that school in Bulgaria was from 07:00 to 13:00. In the UK it's 07:00 to 15:00. You had more time to do homework in Bulgaria and more time to be a child.

petargyurov··on Open Terms Archive – Follow changes to terms of service
I was expecting this to show me a pretty timeline of diffs but instead it emails you the diff (I presume) when a change occurs. Kind of useful I guess, but I don't really fancy signing up to it.
petargyurov··on I made a site to explore the best UI/UX design tools out there
Some feedback:

* add some left and right padding, i.e. center the table or at least make it match the padding in your navbar

* back button functionality is broken (Firefox 87)

* Popularity metric doesn't really tell me anything at the moment (i.e.: a "progress bar" without labels is fairly pointless)

* Some columns are too wide for their contents (e.g.: pricing)

* Not sure the supplementary text is needed next to some icons (e.g.: The green tick icon in Version control is enough, the "View file version history" text adds nothing)

petargyurov··on Launch HN: Superpowered (YC W21) – Calendar in your menu bar
I'm sorry for being negative, but paying $10 per month for what is essentially a calendar widget is blowing my mind. The fact that this is even in YC and not just a side project is taking what's left of my brain and blowing it into the stratosphere.

> We’ve only solved a small part of a bigger problem. The SaaS platforms we use for work don't work well together. It shouldn’t take cycling through ten different apps and Chrome tabs to stay on top of everything.

Can someone give me an example of this problem? To me this feels so "extra"... Maybe I'm missing something.

petargyurov··on Microsoft Sculpt Wired Conversion Mod
I have a bit of a sour experience with this keyboard. I love it, I really do.

But when I accidentally wrecked the receiver, here's what I found:

* MS doesn't offer replacement receivers

* Each keyboard is paired to its specific receiver so you can't even buy an off-the-shelf replacement

* MS make it extremely hard to reach a person to speak to

* Their website practically doesn't have support for this keyboard

My Sculpt is now a useless piece of plastic.

petargyurov··on Kea parrots perform domain-general statistical inference
The authors are currently working on the next iteration of the model which will hopefully come with a few improvements.

AFAIK, they are keen on getting their hands on data that proved difficult for the model -- I suggest you get in touch with them if you think you could help!

petargyurov··on Kea parrots perform domain-general statistical inference
Thanks :) I had been looking to enter the conservation space and at the time I had plans to travel to NZ for tourism purposes. The two ideas kind of merged, and knowing that NZ has lots of cool species I figured I'd check out their conservation department. I sent out an email asking them if they need any help with anything and that's one of the things they were keen to have.
petargyurov··on Kea parrots perform domain-general statistical inference
In case any camera trap folk are here, I'm currently volunteering with the NZ Department of Conservation to build an AI-assisted image sorting tool that speeds up the weeding out of empty images.

https://github.com/petargyurov/megadetector-gui

This is currently used to assist the conservation efforts of various endemic species such as the kakapo, kea and takahe. (The ML model used is not limited to just these species!)

petargyurov··on Black coffee can be good for your heart, studies show
Interesting, thanks. I wonder if the "Human Effect Matrix" is manually "calculated" or if they've automated it somehow.
petargyurov··on Black coffee can be good for your heart, studies show
For a while I've had this idea of making a website that lets users search for a food item (e.g: coffee, wine, turmeric) and they are presented with a count of how many studies show it has positive or negative effects on the body.

Of course automating the parsing of thousands of papers (and ensuring the verdict is correct) is a huge task. And that's without mentioning the reliability of each study...

petargyurov··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I am digging the design on your first project, thought the exampe self-review is a little too dense for me -- I'd like to see some more padding around things -- or maybe the black and white colour scheme is making things appear that way?

I actually like the idea itself, but personally I wouldn't pay for it. I can only see this as an enterprise/teams offering.
