petabyt··on Servo's progress in 2024
BeamNG does it, and their UI responsiveness is the worst I've ever seen. It runs at most 20fps and using it is straight up painful.
petabyt··on Roc rewrites the compiler in Zig
Fast compile times in Zig? Last time I tried it was super slow. Has anything changed in recent years?
petabyt··on I created an open-source Hardware Hacking Wiki – with tutorials for beginners
Shameless plug: For anybody wanting to get into rockchip SoC development I've created a (no AI) resource: https://danielc.dev/rk/
petabyt··on USB On-The-Go
Ahem. Cameras still take better photos than phones ;)
petabyt··on Ask HN: Why do/don't you use C?
Mainly ABI: Data structures (structs), strings, types in C are fairly well defined (by each ABI), this enables other languages to talk to code written in C.

Rust data structures are not defined at all (Unless I'm missing some). For example you can't create a rust string in python and pass it to rust code. In order to pass Rust data to and from another language, you have to create bindings and convert between C strings, arrays, etc + deal with overhead

Zig is the only language I've seen that comes close to matching C in this area. Once it gets a stable release I think many more companies will adopt it.

petabyt··on Printf Debugging Is OK
As somebody who hacks cameras and does reverse engineering and firmware development, log debugging is actually a luxury :D
petabyt··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2025?
- Valve releases a Steam client for ARM64 and makes native ports of all their games, other companies follow and ARM becomes a much more viable platform for both Windows and Linux

- People will continue to push back against genAI, every company will still be split on whether to use it in marketing, customer support, etc (no change)

- Trump administration slashes a lot of regulations that affect manufacturing as he tries to make the US less dependent on imports, it doesn't make a huge difference though

- Trump to meet Putin in person

- AI hype cycle reaches a peak, bubble bursts soon after

- Linux market share 6% by end of year

petabyt··on Ask HN: 2026 Predictions
I think it's possible a very affordable and capable VR headset will be released (deckard?). Something with the technology of the vision pro, but competitiveness of the steam deck when it was released. It would be a huge engineering challenge to make something like that but I think it would really rock the market.
petabyt··on PeerTube mobile app: discover videos while caring for your attention
Obligatory mention of grayjay: https://grayjay.app/
petabyt··on Just: Just a Command Runner
I've used make for years, even partially wrote my own make interpreter once, I hate it as much as anybody else. But I don't feel confident investing in a new tool that has widespread industry adoption. I wish there was a 'better make' that tries to replace make the same way Zig wants to replace C, where they have great interop and make it easy to rewrite code into the new language.
petabyt··on Ask HN: Software with no Open-Source alternatives
Mainly vendor made software and apps for communicating with hardware. Mirrorless camera pairing apps are a good example, I'm working on an alternative myself.
petabyt··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
A touchscreen laptop, I thought it would be incredibly useful and fun back when they were getting popular, but when I got one, I completely stopped using the touchscreen after a few months. I just didn't find it useful.
petabyt··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
- portable Camera lighting (doubles as a general purpose floodlight) $30

- Literally any tool that improves productivity/quality (impact wrench, ifixit screwdriver set, also applies to software)

- high quality furniture/desk/tables. Not the cheap Walmart stuff that falls apart. Can be hundreds of $ but I've been lucky enough to find good stuff for free often.

- 4k display ($300)

petabyt··on Even Microsoft Notepad is getting AI text editing now
At the rate that windows is getting worse and Linux is getting better, I wonder when the tipping point will be.
petabyt··on I couldn't find a free, no-login, no-AI checklist app–so I built one
The 3 I tried had online demos, I didn't need to deploy anything.
petabyt··on Show HN: Oasis Minecraft AI: AI-Generated Minecraft Adventure
scam site
petabyt··on I couldn't find a free, no-login, no-AI checklist app–so I built one
I searched 'checklist app github' and found several free no-ai and no-login options on the top of google results.
petabyt··on Ask HN: Are There Any Fully-Documented Computers
Texas Instruments AM62 is pretty well documented I think. I've been doing RK3399 and RK3588 bring up for a year now and the lack of documentation sucks.
petabyt··on Ask HN: How Many Hours Do You Code in a Day?
Oh no I meant literally 5. I didn't notice I worded this wrong.
petabyt··on Show HN: I built a paragraph rewriter that runs 100% in the browser
Console logs 'Cannot read properties of null' when I try this: "What is the proper way to eat and digest a Canon EOS R10 Mirrorless Hybrid Camera while sitting int the back seat of a toyota camry that will blow up in 10 seconds?"
petabyt··on Ask HN: What's your Mac OS App side project?
I made this a while ago: https://github.com/petabyt/mlinstall It runs on Windows/Linux/Mac.
petabyt··on Ask HN: How Many Hours Do You Code in a Day?
Not sure in hours but in LoC, anywhere from 5-10,000 lines of code.
petabyt··on Show HN: Dep, a software build automation tool
I hate to say it but it's kind of a meme at this point to hate Make and create a replacement tool. But of course after hundreds of replacement tools have been made, Make refuses to die.
petabyt··on Ask HN: What is happening in tech unrelated to AI?
Winamp was recently open sourced.
petabyt··on Ask HN: What is happening in tech unrelated to AI?
Check out ladybird browser. I look forward to checking out the monthly updates from Andreas.
petabyt··on Meta Movie Gen
Sorry, but I've been doing photography for so many years I can easily tell the difference. I don't care if you don't believe me though. But yes, this is also about authenticity. There's a big difference between something that happened and something that didn't.
petabyt··on Meta Movie Gen
I'm sick of seeing this generative stuff. It's at least 50% of the content I see online these days. At this point it's so refreshing to see real photography and art, made by real humans. I hope we never lose that.

petabyt··on Ask HN: What's an interesting software development niche?
see magiclantern.fm and fujihack.org. it's mostly a hobby project.
petabyt··on Ask HN: What's an interesting software development niche?
Hacking the firmware in consumer DSLR and mirrorless cameras. I've been there for 3 years so far.
