Actual humans love me, tech bros fear me.

pesus··on Is Show HN dead? No, but it's drowning
It often is. The concept of "gatekeeping" becoming well known and something people blindly rail against was a huge mistake. Not everything is for everyone, and "gatekeeping" is usually just maintaining standards.
pesus··on Stanford Review: Is YC for Cowards?
This is a very strange article. The lament about how Stanford students "said things that made people mad and didn’t immediately apologize", but the example linked is a newspaper story about students screaming homophobic slurs at people and telling them they hope they die of AIDS. This is the supposed "courage" Stanford students used to have?
pesus··on Homeland Security Wants Social Media Sites to Expose Anti-ICE Accounts
Have they stated the justification for this anywhere? You'd think a site that brands itself as being for hackers would value its users having control over their comments/privacy.
pesus··on CIA suddenly stops publishing, removes archives of The World Factbook
If it was about the cost of updating it, they wouldn't need to remove the archived versions.
pesus··on CIA suddenly stops publishing, removes archives of The World Factbook
Now that you mention it, I'm pretty convinced this is the reason they took it down. If you can't dispute the facts, get rid of them, I guess.
pesus··on How AI assistance impacts the formation of coding skills
I think we're going to see a small minority of juniors who managed to ignore the hype/peer pressure/easy path and actually learned to code have a huge advantage over the others.
pesus··on Please don't say mean things about the AI I just invested a billion dollars in
On one hand, we're actively destroying society, but on the other, billionaires are getting richer! Why are you mad at us!?
pesus··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
Depends on if their new love provides as much money as their old one, which is probably not likely. I'd rather have had those decades to stash and invest.
pesus··on Denmark's struggle to break up with Silicon Valley
The average person has almost no way of making any serious impact on society, especially in this time period. Besides that, the US was founded by people taking "the easy way out" and leaving another country, so it's only fitting.

Though the commenter mentioned working at a FAANG, so maybe they're far more culpable in this situation than the average person. If that's the case, I'd have to agree with you.

pesus··on X Didn't Fix Grok's 'Undressing' Problem. It Just Makes People Pay for It
Makes complete sense when you view it through the lens of Musk's opinions.
pesus··on Google is dead. Where do we go now?
I don't think the vibe shift they're describing has fully taken place yet, but I think the foundations have been laid and it's started. It's probably going to be a while and take further societal changes to fully come into fruition, though.
pesus··on Nabokov's guide to foreigners learning Russian
You being uncomfortable with people different than you does not mean there's a conspiracy.
pesus··on Programmers and software developers lost the plot on naming their tools
I still think of the short-lived Apple eMac when I read it.
pesus··on Everyone in Seattle hates AI
It is absolutely sane to be angry at people's livelihoods being destroyed and most aspects of life being worsened just so a handful of multi-billionaires that already control society can become even richer.
pesus··on Everyone in Seattle hates AI
Frankly, tech deserves its bad reputation in SF (and worldwide, really).

One look at the dystopian billboards bragging about trying to replace humans with AI should make any sane human angry at what tech has done. Or the rising rents due to an influx of people working on mostly useless AI startups, 90% of which won't be around in 5 years. Or even how poorly many in tech behave in public and how poorly they treat service workers. That's just the tip of the iceberg, and just in SF alone.

I say all this as someone living in SF and working in tech. As a whole, we've brought the hate upon ourselves, and we deserve it.

pesus··on The AI bubble is 17 times the size of the dot-com frenzy and four times subprime
That's probably less likely than ever.
pesus··on US memo to colleges proposes terms on ideology, foreign enrollment for fed funds
Why are they forcing unpopular viewpoints on people? We do not need to be teaching creationism or teaching that climate change isn't real (to name a couple examples) just because they're less popular.
pesus··on US memo to colleges proposes terms on ideology, foreign enrollment for fed funds
> People on the left think conservative political violence is worse. But conservatives don’t see it that way.

It doesn't matter if they "see" it that way. The statistics don't change because they don't like them.

pesus··on US memo to colleges proposes terms on ideology, foreign enrollment for fed funds
The "units" of critical thinking and meeting people who are different than you.
pesus··on U.S. hits new low in World Happiness Report
Agreed. Even as someone only on the tail end of the millennial generation, the total disappearance of hope in the past 10-15 years (but especially in the last 5) has been palpable. There's a tweet that's been floating around recently that says something along the lines of "basically nobody under 40 expects good things to happen ever again", and I think that sums it up pretty accurately.
pesus··on Meta Ray-Ban Display
I've ever seen them in the California Bay Area either. I don't go into the office for my current job, though, so maybe there are some tech bros out there wearing them?
pesus··on Meta Ray-Ban Display
I'm really not a fan of them. There's already too much recording going on on a daily basis. I would personally avoid anyone wearing these. They say the mandatory LED activation prevents the issue, but I still don't trust it, and find it very off putting either way.
pesus··on Waymo has received our pilot permit allowing for commercial operations at SFO
A lot of times the Waymo is only a few bucks more, so if you were going to tip the uber driver it balances out anyway.
pesus··on Waymo has received our pilot permit allowing for commercial operations at SFO
Anyone who's taken enough Ubers and/or has had bad enough luck to have gotten a terrible Uber driver. Pretty much everyone I know, along with myself have had multiple awful Uber driver experiences.
pesus··on DOJ Deletes Study Showing Domestic Terrorists Are Most Often Right Wing
The article is not wrong just because the above commenter didn't like it. Take a look yourself: https://archive.is/2024.10.24-222147/https://nij.ojp.gov/top...
pesus··on DOJ Deletes Study Showing Domestic Terrorists Are Most Often Right Wing
Reading the actual study says:

> Since 1990, far-right extremists have committed far more ideologically motivated homicides than far-left or radical Islamist extremists, including 227 events that took more than 520 lives.[1] In this same period, far-left extremists committed 42 ideologically motivated attacks that took 78 lives.

pesus··on Meta just suspended the Facebook account of Neal Stephenson
Did you miss the part of my 2 sentence comment where they openly praised Hitler? That makes someone a Nazi.
pesus··on Silicon Valley is pouring millions into pro-AI PACs to sway midterms
No, the actual evidence would be the investigation and report that says the opposite of what you're claiming. A baseless "this random person said it didn't happen!" claim isn't evidence.

Edit: what exactly do you think you just linked in your edit? That's an investigation by a Trump lackey into the origins of the investigations of Russian interference. You just provided proof that the initial investigation was not politically motivated and is credible. You're welcome to analyze the actual reports and evidence instead of clinging to the word of someone appointed by a convicted felon and fraudster in an attempt to prove they didn't cheat.

pesus··on Silicon Valley is pouring millions into pro-AI PACs to sway midterms
You should probably take a look at the actual evidence instead.
pesus··on Meta just suspended the Facebook account of Neal Stephenson
This was back around 2019 or so, but you're not wrong at all. Back then Zuckerburg et al at least pretended to be against hate speech. It's so much worse now.
