personjerry··on GPT-4o's Memory Breakthrough – Needle in a Needlestack
That's great to hear. My biggest issue with GPT-4.0 was that as the conversation got longer, the quality diminished (especially relevant for coding projects)

I wonder if it'll be better now. Will test today.

personjerry··on Show HN: I created an app for you to be a more unpredictable romantic partner
I think you're saying "it's the thought that counts" and it's good enough that they thought to get you something, even if the idea comes from an app?

But then why use an app at all then, you could get them a used bottlecap and "it's the thought that counts"

personjerry··on Show HN: I created an app for you to be a more unpredictable romantic partner
One of the most important characteristics in a partner is authenticity.

If they didn't think of getting you flowers themself (and had to use an app), is that real?

personjerry··on More than 100 arrested in Spain in $900k WhatsApp scheme
Soon your calls won't be safe either; Voice cloning is getting REALLY good.
personjerry··on How I think about debt
That's a really naive view. If you take on debt for a good reason, you can alter the trajectory of the function completely.
personjerry··on Using a LLM to compress text
I mean, sure this is compression in the sense that I can send you a tiny "compressed text" and all you need is this multi-terabyte model to decompress it!
personjerry··on The Rabbit R1 is probably running Android and is powered by an Android app
> It feels like we need to wait for the underlying technology to advance before we can get to the next set of interesting products.

I think it shows a lack of creativity to say this, because existing technologies can definitely be used in novel ways to create value. Perhaps we just love to imagine new technologies as engineers.

But for example, the iPhone was nothing "new" in terms of hard tech but it definitely changed the world.

Looking for remote Product / Growth opportunities. I have a proven track record in product management and growth, helping startups build teams and leading them to create successful software products with fast user growth and high retention, most recently as Head of Growth at Dendron Inc. (YC W21).

I'm technical, with engineering and leadership experience at Facebook.

personjerry··on Show HN: I made a spaced repetition tool to master coding problems
I feel like spaced repetition is exactly what you shouldn't do. Spaced repetition is great for rote memorization of arbitrary facts but programming is about how to think about and solve problems.

If you master the methods and ideas, you should be able to derive the answers on the spot. That's better than memorization because then you can actually deal with real interviewers who 1) Want to hear your train of thought and 2) Will give you random changes or variants to problems.

It's not about memorizing solutions, because in reality when are you ever going to reverse a linked list or balance a red-black tree? No, so if you're going to put in the effort anyway, you should learn the concepts and understand when to apply them so your knowledge is actually applicable. This will actually make you a better programmer, and you'll do better with the interviews that are actually good (I speak with experience giving interviews at FB).

personjerry··on Never struggle to give feedback again
There's some nice ideas here but the reasoning / breakdown could be better "defined".

I highly recommend reading Crucial Conversations if you want to learn how to systematically have these conversations that seem "confrontational". As a recovering introvert, it was super useful to break down these social interactions and understand the mistakes that I (and most people) make. It was part of management training at Facebook; I found it also helped me in many contexts outside of work too.

personjerry··on Two lifeforms merge in once-in-a-billion-years evolutionary event
What's more likely, it happens once in a billion years and we happened to catch the exact specimens doing it? Or it happens a lot more often and we happened to catch an instance of it, but it's usually not as impactful or memorable as the mentioned instances?

Terrible sensationalist reporting.

personjerry··on Two hunters from the same lodge afflicted with sporadic CJD: is CWD to blame?
The three scariest afflictions to me are: Cancer, Rabies, and Prions
personjerry··on Stacking triangles for fun and profit
Also fun exercise:

Go through Euclid's Elements (i.e. http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/elements/bookI/bookI.html)

Read the definitions and then prove all the postulates yourself, in order.

personjerry··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?
Finished? Haven't managed that yet
personjerry··on Justin Trudeau announces $2.4B for AI investments in Canada
Being a Canadian, having worked in SF, London, and Toronto, this actually seems like a reasonable approach. It's certainly hard to compete on wages but a lot of people do appreciate Canada and life here, and cutting these costs would go a long way.

personjerry··on Redis adopts dual source-available licensing
Yeah but they got moderate paychecks for like a decade? Isn't that a "sustainable business model"?
personjerry··on Redis adopts dual source-available licensing
> But charity is not a sustainable business model

Wasn't Dwarf Fortress charity funded for a long time?

personjerry··on Show HN: Personal Knowledge Base Visualization
How do you make it useful though?
personjerry··on Features lost across versions of macOS
Why is this flagged and unvouchable?
personjerry··on Two scammers, a web of betrayal, and Europe's fraud of the century
> He bought her a Bugatti in green, like her eyes.

> The problem was that he lacked capital. He needed more than the 80,000 euros he’d received from El Ghazouani.

A Bugatti is like a few million dollars no? This discrepancy doesn't make sense to me, if he already had the money on that scale why did a few hundred thousand euros of investment matter so desperately?

personjerry··on The First Dune Game 32 Years Later: An LGR Retrospective [video]
Dune 2 was my first computer game. I played it as a child with my dad when we lived in China. Later, we'd play Dune 2000, Red Alert 2, and eventually Starcraft (all pirated of course). I wasted a huge amount of time but at least it helped instill in me a passion for computers.

Starcraft turned into Warcraft into Dota, and now I have 5000 hours in Dota 2. I often wonder what I could've accomplished if I hadn't been swallowed up by video games!

personjerry··on How I got scammed on Facebook Marketplace (2023)
The title should be "How PayPal refunded me for a scam" no?
personjerry··on Show HN: Name That Nation
Why's it so slow? When I press Continue it takes like 1 second to load the next country?

It's like 195 jpegs, just pre-load them please. I can't continue like this after 3 countries, it's too tedious.

personjerry··on Ask HN: What have you built with LLMs?
I built https://eternalsouls.ai/ for a client recently.

You just export and upload a WhatsApp conversation and it will learn the personality AND voice of your conversation partner. You can send/receive text or voice messages; It was pretty damn spooky to actually have a voice conversation back and forth with an AI standing in for my "friend"

personjerry··on Infinite Craft
Ok I played this way too long, the most ridiculous straight up is `Steampunk Bahamut Batpunkestilla Rex`
personjerry··on The Hacker News Top books of 2023
A professor introduced me to Euclid's Elements a long time ago, and he had us derive the principles from the axioms one by one in order, as Euclid did. It's a fun exercise!
