perryprog··on Julia as a CLI Calculator
Not to mention, Spotlight does a /bunch/ of unit conversions. You can even type things like `1km/h to kt` for example. There's quite a few units defined already that I'm usually pleasantly surprised. This also works on iOS.

The one downside is you can't do unit conversions of a mathematical expression, just of a number. (i.e., 2^2 m/s does not work but 4 m/s does).

Whenever I have to do something more complicated I usually use M-x calc or maxima with ezunits.

perryprog··on Discord is not an acceptable choice for free software projects
I couldn’t agree more. I also really want to emphasize a less mentioned issue with Discord, which is its accessibility (or lack thereof).

It’s effectively impossible for anyone with visual impairment that use a screen-reader to use Discord. I could go into (/very/) great length into this, but that’s the gist. What makes this even better is that there’s no getting around this limitation: third-party clients or client modifications are disallowed in the TOS and will cause your account to be banned.

perryprog··on How we hacked Blackboard and changed our grades (2018)
Must've been fixed. My school used It's Learning for a while until this year, and it was fairly secure. HSTS of course.
perryprog··on Nim 0.20.0 (1.0 RC1) released
Don't forget Julia for Python and data science!

(Obviously also a huge generalization :))

perryprog··on Switch from Chrome to Firefox
Safari user here—I personally have never used extensions much (probably my own loss), and on Safari I just have 1Password and uBlock°.

Besides Safari's lack of extensions I find it to be more or less on par with Firefox, assuming you're in the Apple ecosystem. The dev tools feel extremely polished and feature complete. The only thing Safari's dev tools lack IMO is no fancy CSS support for things like grid or animations.

I occasional open up Firefox Dev Edition when I get a weird bug on a webpage and that sort of thing but besides that Safari has served all my needs perfectly.

Hi, and belated congratulations!

Are you by any chance planning to release your source after the ceremony? It'd be really interesting to read some peak-efficiency GMP code as that's a library I've always been interested in.

Additionally, do you happen to know how much longer it could take to factor modulus n and then compute the value for 2^(2^t) using the methods described in the paper? i.e. instead of repeated squaring compute

  2^(2^t mod phi(n)) mod n

Ah I see, thank you!
perryprog··on With Proton and Steam Play, many Windows games now work on Linux
>Let's face it. None of us are running *nix or MacOS for the sake of gaming.

I'll be honest, my main OS for gaming is macOS. Is it the best choice? No, but it works well for me. If there's ever a windows exclusive game then I just resort to GeForce Now[1]. It's definitely not the best option, but I find it to be the most convenient for me.

perryprog··on Programming for Grade 8
I’ve seen those! They’re definitely better, but we’re not really _supposed_ to choose.
perryprog··on Programming for Grade 8
8th grader here! I've been programming for a relatively years (maybe around 7-8, very basic stuff of course, like turtle games and scratch. Huge thanks to my Dad :) ), and this seems like a really really great thing to do.

Most people in my grade I think would be able to make it through making a calculator, but maybe with some trouble. I'm also not sure if many of them have the attention span either.

I think my favorite thing about this is how it's all text based. My school currently does an event every year called "hour of code" where you do some visual programming for about 40 minutes (class period cuts it off). It's usually the same thing every year, and it seems like people don't learn anything new at them.

I hope your students keep on learning, and you keep on teaching!

Interestingly, one of my family members just fell for one of their "DOWNLOAD" ads, while doing some work for a class. She installed it, thinking it was an app for the class, and I had to wipe all of the junk it installed.

After that, I installed uBlock Origin for her.

perryprog··on Show HN: Handwriting for the web
So uhh... seems like some XSS happened. I would advise take this website down ASAP, and fix your bugs, and sanitize your database.
perryprog··on Taking Children Seriously
Child here! 14 years old, in middle school.

If anyone has questions, I'd be happy to answer.

perryprog··on Hello, world: this is WikiTribune
This sort of reminded me of ChaosBot [0], something that sounds like what could be a total disaster, ended up being really neat.

perryprog··on Ask HN: How to become the first result of a Google search for a name?
>Here's what I did: I negotiated with my parents before I was born to give me a unique name.

Yeah, this is really helpful for SEO, so if you haven't done this yet for your personal site, go do that!

perryprog··on Introducing Remembear, new password manager
That's probably true...

I use it for very basic things, so I guess I wouldn't know.

perryprog··on Introducing Remembear, new password manager
Bears are very cute. Can't go wrong with that!

Jokes aside, this would be interesting to compare to 1Password once it matures a little. So far it looks very similar.

perryprog··on Introducing Remembear, new password manager
I use TunnelBear, and I can say it works beautifully. It really is just turn on, turn off.

Does anyone know of any possible alternatives? I'm just curious what the options are, because this seems like a lot of fun.

Ohh good idea to save that sort of thing as a bookmark. Thanks!
perryprog··on FZF and RipGrep – Navigate with bash faster than ever before
Fish user here! FZF works beautifully with fish, no plugin manager needed. `brew install fzf` gives you the option to install scripts for fish if it's your shell (IIRC).

Do you have code for this on GitHub?
perryprog··on Modern terminal-based text editor
I use what I get, if I have a nice config with Vim, I'll use it (badly, but it works well for me). Most of the time I'm happy with nano, assuming it's a one time edit thing like /etc/hosts, or I'm copy-pasting something into a file.
perryprog··on 2016 Underhanded Rust contest: the results
It works fine for me.
perryprog··on MacOS High Sierra
This sounds much smarter than my method of installing each of those from scratch, I usually dedicate a few hours of reinstalling everything.
