perryh2··on Show HN: Sysdig, a tool for Linux system exploration
This tool is very similar to what I had created last summer as an intern (strace/lsof analysis), but it seems to be a lot more rich in features. I analyzed system calls as well as application tracing (New Relic) to find/fix performance bottlenecks.
perryh2··on Tesla Motors plans to debut cheaper car in early 2015 (2013)
What is the main attraction behind buying a Tesla or other electric vehicles? The main sources of energy in the United States are still oil, coal, and natural gases. This means that most energy use in the US will still contribute to pollution and consumption of a non-renewable resource. It makes a lot of sense to drive an electric vehicle in a country like France, where 75% of energy comes from nuclear and around 15% comes from hydro sources.I think a Model S would still be an interesting car to drive given the torque provided by an electric motor, but the car still is pretty heavy (5,000 lbs due to batteries) and uses a lot of electricity to charge.
perryh2··on Good laptops for Linux
The version of XFCE in 13.10 works well in HiDPI (15" 2880x1620 on my T540p).
perryh2··on Good laptops for Linux
I just got a Lenovo Thinkpad T540p with a 15" 2880x1620 display. Despite all the changes in this generation's Thinkpad line, I really like my purchase. The keyboard is very good and I'm okay with the trackpad, since I tap rather than click. I'm running XFCE, which works well for the most part with my HiDPI display. I've got Bumblebee installed to switch between my discrete Nvidia and Intel GPUs. For $1200 I got this amazing screen, Intel i5-4200M CPU, 4gb memory (added another 4gb), 500gb disk (swapped for SSD), dual band Intel wifi with support for AC, and 9 cell battery.
perryh2··on Ask HN: Best IRC channels?
The last time I checked, that channel has almost nothing to do with startups.

perryh2··on Best Linux Laptops (2013)
Don't. The Y510p has a really cheap screen. I know its price sounds enticing. I compared its screen with my Macbook Pro and it looks very "washed out".

This email does make me cringe, but I think Yahoo is certainly getting a slice of the best and brightest from new college graduates. I was interviewing onsite recently and everyone interviewing there were from some of the best schools in the country.
perryh2··on DigitalOcean Sucks. Use DigitalOcean
What are some use cases that you have for running your own kernel? I just can't think of much need of running a custom kernel. There's a lot of different kernel versions to choose from. For subsystems like process scheduling, you can just load your own kernel module to change that.

perryh2··on Startups: stop using generic form letters when you tell a candidate 'no'
Giving personalized feedback seems to be a potentially good idea when telling a candidate 'yes' as well. People interview at multiple companies and sometimes a more personal connection to a company that gave out an offer can be enticing.
perryh2··on Google, IBM, Mellanox, Nvidia, Tyan form OpenPower Consortium
The computer in the #1 spot was recently announced in China and sports Intel's Xeon Phi coprocessors, which include many cores per unit. The system in the #3 spot uses all cpu's and is completely homogenous. I worked in HPC at LLNL last year and saw the POWER processors. They are very small units and don't draw nearly as much power as Intel Xeon series.

Here's a picture of the Sequoia machine: http://imgur.com/6UrZndM

Each of those cards is a single node in the cluster.

perryh2··on Google, IBM, Mellanox, Nvidia, Tyan form OpenPower Consortium
For those that do not know, IBM processors are used in high-performance computing applications. Some of the world's fastest supercomputers are based on POWER [1]. These supercomputers can have hundreds of thousands or even millions of cores for massively parallel computing. We've seen recently from some of these systems that the POWER processors are much more effective than x86 processors. They consume lower power and generate less heat. If combined with Nvidia GPU's for CUDA and Mellanox's commodity InifiniBand interconnect hardware, we could have affordable clusters for heterogenous high-performance computing.

In the past, the supercomputers/clusters sold by IBM do not include hardware from these other companies. I think this partnership with Tyan (major manufacturer of current x86 chipsets) will also allow 3rd-party vendors to build systems with IBM POWER processors.

In other words, POWER is not in the same market as x86 or ARM. It does have its own niche in the market.

perryh2··on I got access to all of BitTorrent Inc's source code and sensitive documents
They offered $500 as a nice and thankful gesture. If you wanted money, take it and don't cry about not getting more. You're not entitled to more money nor do you deserve more.

perryh2··on Storage Space Doubled For All Linode VPS plans
The people behind DigitalOcean have been around for a while with ServerStack, the parent company. The main engineers also used to work at another major cloud hosting company.

perryh2··on Rackspace releases CLI for managing cloud via Ruby
fog doesn't seem to be a CLI. Tugboat (by Jack Pearkes) is a very good CLI for managing DigitalOcean services.

Why are guns even used on dogs? Shouldn't there be a way to sedate aggressive dogs? I just don't understand. Getting shot by a gun as a human or dog is almost always going to be fatal.
