peripitea··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
Except you don't need to solve any remotely hard technical problems for the capabilities to be terrifying here.
peripitea··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
That doesn't explain why it's abuse, though. How does the company benefit by paying this foreigner $200k + benefits + immigration fees/legal bills compared to hiring a US citizen? Abuse is e.g. bringing in cheap foreign labor at below US market rate. This is not that.
peripitea··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
How exactly is the system being abused by this guy being paid $200k?
peripitea··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
Don't worry all those rural hospitals are about to shut down anyway.
peripitea··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
If you listen to the interview Trump & team gave, it's $100k per employee per year.
peripitea··on OpenAI claims gold-medal performance at IMO 2025
It can be 10-100x faster for some tasks already. I've had it build prototypes in minutes that would have taken me a few hours to cobble together, especially in domains and using libraries I don't have experience with.
peripitea··on OpenAI claims gold-medal performance at IMO 2025
It sounds like you're saying AI is just doing brute force with a lot of force, but I can't imagine that's actually what you think, so would you mind clarifying?
peripitea··on EverQuest
Eventually some of your players explore everything there is to be explored, and you need something more involved to keep them occupied.
peripitea··on EverQuest
Yes I thought the same.
peripitea··on EverQuest
EverQuest was my first real brush with agency. I was still a teenager but I loved researching strategies and game mechanics to figure out how my guild and I could play more effectively, and it paid off. We were never world first, but we got closer than we should have for the small server we were on. The feeling that the work I was doing was contributing to the success of an entire organization of people, and that this group of adults was happy to defer to me as long as my work ethic and ideas were good, was so much more powerful and motivating than anything I'd experienced in school. I don't think I felt that empowered again for another ~decade, well into my "real" career.
peripitea··on 4-7-8 Breathing
That is still hyperventilating in a technical sense, as is the breathing you're doing for a minute beforehand; both will result in lowering your CO2. If you're actually holding your breath and going under water, please take an intro freediving class. So many people die every year just because they don't have the basic safety training necessary to turn this activity from extraordinarily dangerous to quite safe.
peripitea··on 4-7-8 Breathing
You don't do breathing exercises to get better at breathing. It's for your brain.
peripitea··on 4-7-8 Breathing
Get a cheap pulse oximeter and try it yourself if you're curious. It will not cause your oxygen levels to change in any meaningful way barring some very serious health issues.
peripitea··on 4-7-8 Breathing
Can you elaborate? As others are saying this can be extremely dangerous. Normally I wouldn't just reiterate other comments but if it might save a life can't hurt to be sure.
peripitea··on Which year: guess which year each photo was taken
Hey, small bug to report: When you share your stats, the date seems to be based off local time, not the day of the test. So like here in PT, it's 4/23, but I just did tomorrow's quiz (because it releases at 9pm PT = midnight ET); the share text should say 4/24 but it still says 4/23. Or put another way, I shared two different results with my group chat today that both said 4/23.
peripitea··on Which year: guess which year each photo was taken
You can just take a screenshot of them. Not the cleanest way to do it but probably the fastest if you don't already have special tools on your phone.
peripitea··on Which year: guess which year each photo was taken
Tried plugging it into the new o3 model out of curiosity and it got 0.2, i.e. it got everything exactly right save for one that it missed by a year.
peripitea··on Telegram abides by EU laws, including the Digital Services Act
I'm just pointing out how implausible the claim is that the vast majority of Americans are far worse off than Spaniards. Of course there's more to life than money and GDP/capita is an imperfect measure, but the median American leads a very comfortable life.
peripitea··on Telegram abides by EU laws, including the Digital Services Act
>In the US the vast majority never "makes it" and they are far worse off than we are here.

Mississippi, the poorest state in America, has 33% higher GDP per capita than Spain does.

peripitea··on Rebooting (something like) early Triplebyte
Are companies hiring enough for this to be viable and to get 20% of first year salary? I thought all of that had died down significantly, but I haven't been following closely.
peripitea··on CFPB Takes Action Against Coding Boot Camp BloomTech and CEO Austen Allred
Yeah it's really hard in both this article and the comments to tell what was actually problematic and what wasn't. A lot of people seem to think ISAs are fundamentally problematic but none of their arguments seem compelling to me. It's not even really clear to me that they did/didn't deliver value. I'm assuming some of this is true, but hard to tell how much -- the CFPB isn't really giving sufficient details to know how much of what they're saying is true in spirit vs legally true political posturing. Regardless, I'll be cautioning anyone who asks me for bootcamp recommendations and is considering BloomTech.
peripitea··on CFPB Takes Action Against Coding Boot Camp BloomTech and CEO Austen Allred
Those schools still charge you $50k and take 4 years of your time, so I'm not sure how that comparison makes sense, particularly for working folks looking to uplevel their skills.
peripitea··on Governance of Superintelligence
What do you mean there are no plausible mechanisms? This reads like one of those "it will take 1-10 million years for man to fly" kind of statements.
peripitea··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Maybe I'm naive, but it isn't clear to me that this is rent-seeking behavior by OpenAI.
peripitea··on Tesla workers shared sensitive images recorded by customer cars
As far as I can tell this is misleading? Look at the manual brandonagr2 linked for example: https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_au/GUID-2E8E5E0...

Data Sharing you can turn off, but Data Sharing is different from data sharing as a concept. The telematics appear to get sent regardless of what you do. It seems they intentionally chose this Data Sharing label to deceive people into thinking that all data sharing would be turned off.

peripitea··on Tesla workers shared sensitive images recorded by customer cars
This has been the number one thing stopping me from getting a Tesla. I can't believe how little privacy concerns have come up with them. Until I can have fine-grained control of what data gets sent to the mothership, or opt out entirely, I can't see myself buying one.
peripitea··on The Contradictions of Sam Altman
Do you honestly think that AWS or Google Cloud would have given them billions in credits just because they're a nonprofit? I'm all for being skeptical of powerful people's motives but that suggests a major disconnect from reality somewhere in your thinking.
peripitea··on The Contradictions of Sam Altman
Why does it make zero sense? It makes perfect sense to me.
peripitea··on The Contradictions of Sam Altman
The parent is a non-profit, hence no equity is required to have control. Seems pretty straightforward to me.
peripitea··on Coinbase issued Wells notice by SEC
The difference between pokemon and this is the common enterprise component. This is very obviously a common enterprise; pokemon is very obviously not.
