Thanks fixed.
peregrine··on A LiveView Is a Process
Yea I should have used excalidraw instead of mermaid, thats on me. I am trying to focus on writing good content and I try to not get stuck on the stuff I'm bad at which is making nicer charts.
peregrine··on Data wrangling in Elixir with Explorer, the power of Rust, the elegance of R
When José first launched LiveBook I thought it was Ambitious to take on the Jupyter project, but here its getting better and more usuable every single day.

Huge props, the Livebook Project is an incredible example what is possible with Elixir.

peregrine··on Elixir and Rust is a good mix
One of the interesting bits about Fly is we have our own servers distributed globally and connected via wireguard. Which makes it is trivial to setup Elixir/Erlang distribution globally, and most importantly, close to your customers. While its not a magic bullet it is pretty amazing to type a few commands have a globally deployed and directly distributed application.

Further Fly builds its Dashboard internally with Phoenix LiveView. We want the Phoenix and Ruby and Laravel and more communities soon, to grow because we believe if they grow, we will too.

peregrine··on Elixir and Rust is a good mix
I go into this in the article :) the rustler team has a made a DirtyNif that can work around that, or you can manually yield if you'd like.
peregrine··on Elixir and Rust is a good mix
Nif's are always a risk to deploy cause they run embedded in the Beam runtime. That said we all use many nif's to do all kinds of stuff and its fine.

I go into this in the article a little but but the ruslter team has made dirtycpu and dirtyio macro's to help reduce the risks.

peregrine··on Elixir and Rust is a good mix
Author here. The rustler team has really made a great developer experience using Rust in Elixir and I just had to share.
peregrine··on Reasons young people are choosing sobriety
As mentioned in my original post. I used to regularly drink. Often with food and hydrating.

You have alcohol tolerance and I no longer have that. Your experience with hangovers is entirely based on tolerance.

Hydration and food are an important aspect of not getting a terrible hangover for me still but it does not stop them entirely.

peregrine··on Reasons young people are choosing sobriety
Sounds like you drink more often than once or twice a quarter.
peregrine··on Reasons young people are choosing sobriety
Once you stop drinking the hangovers get worse and worse. The pandemic removed the pressure to drink (for some) and now it’s really hard to lose an entire day to feeling like garbage in exchange for a couple hours of partying. I still drink one or two socially but anymore and my next day is a mess.
peregrine··on 'Soleus pushup' fuels metabolism for hours while sitting
raises many questions:

- what movements was this evolved to support? (sprinting? walking a different way than was studied? running?)

- Are our shoes causing us to underuse this muscle?

Just from the video and the cadence shown I suspect if you did a slightly quick jog running on your forefoot you might hit that muscle on the rebound.

peregrine··on How bad is my gas stove?
What you have is resistive electric stove. It is not the same as an induction stove.
peregrine··on Samsung remotely disables TVs looted from South African warehouse
I purchased a Samsung tv, I connected it to Wifi one time to download any 'updates' then I disabled WIFI and all of the smart features via the menu and went the extra mile to block its MAC Address on the router.

I never once touched any of the smart features and it has been fine so far. This has been my rule for any devices that requires WIFI. I should really setup a special guest network for them and disable WAN access but I haven't gotten that far yet.

peregrine··on Launch HN: Buoyant (YC S21) – Blimp drones for air freight
This is really cool and this is the kind of startup I'd be applying to in a heartbeat! Very excited to see this happening, great work! I feel like there is vastly more potential for LTA flight that isn't being re-explored with autonomous drones and solar being viable now.

What altitudes do you intend on operating in the "v1"?

peregrine··on The Framework Laptop is now shipping
I am informed by my personal experiences. I had an core i5 laptop from 2019 vs r4800 from 2020 and the experience was night and day running arch linux. Just smoother running everything on the AMD. And my power usage was objectively less and my fans turned on way less subjectively.

A single browser tab is single threaded, but you REGUARLY are forced to run several electron apps, and have many tabs open. Each requiring processes and threads and ryzen blows it out of the water in responsiveness. It was not uncommon for some language-server running to lag out because some chrome shit was blowing up my cpu/memory, which drove me away from vscode again.

The intel is maybe better for gaming or other inherently single program stuff. But at the cost of using WAY more energy and sucking for everything else I do regularly.

Further the m1 macs make them both look fairly power hungry and laggy.

peregrine··on The Framework Laptop is now shipping
Any plans for AMD or ARM processor options? The amd ryzen stuff has nearly good performance per watt that the M1 does. I really can’t see myself buying another intel processor for at least a few generations.
peregrine··on Pockit Modular computing demo [video]
He mentioned in the comments that those two have specific positions for routing purposes.
peregrine··on Money Creation: 344% in the Last 12mo (Fed, M1, $)
This should be the link.

Sharing a link to a graph with minimal context, might as well be spam/misinformation.

peregrine··on The Four Quadrants of Conformism
> I am not quite sure I understand that view. Why is the statement “America was built on fundamental ideas of freedom” a political or identity point?

Because freedom cannot be untied from politics and society. The initial constitutional congress defined freedom for those who owned land. Obviously with time it expanded to all white men, then all white women, and so on, but not with out a inherently political fight.

A fight which we may not encode into law, but which is effectively encoded into law by uneven enforcement of law.

peregrine··on Apple receives permit in California to test self-driving cars
I've got just the apple support document for you! https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205225 If your TV supports HDMI features you will only ever need one remote.
peregrine··on Disapproval of FCC regulations a significant blow against privacy protection
Thanks for the detailed followup. I will admit that I have been less than charitable.

If this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13108404 had never happened I would have far fewer concerns. Since that week I've been keeping an eye on all posts that vanish from the front page or get severely punished and politics seems to get the axe more than not. Again this is N=1 and not a "study" and contains all of my biases.

Sorry for being disgruntled. I overreacted to what I perceived to be a policy that has continued for over a week.

peregrine··on Disapproval of FCC regulations a significant blow against privacy protection
I get you'd like to avoid spammers, bots and etc, but its not at all fair to claim you're not playing politics.

> but that story wasn't touched by moderators.

Is uncharitable as it gets. I cannot verify it. Based on 3163 days of intuition I can see "ahh yes sometimes stories get unfairly flagged automatically" but I can I also see that 1) Its political 2) It discusses a YC company in a not so appealing light.

I'll take your word on it here that nobody touched it, but I honestly see stories disappearing every day whenever they so much as negatively glance at YC/Investments or Politics that benefit YC and YC Investments. (Many former YC companies will more than likely benefit from being able to purchase our browsing history, for example.)

peregrine··on Disapproval of FCC regulations a significant blow against privacy protection
I did one google search and found https://www.theverge.com/2017/3/29/15100620/congress-fcc-isp... and is fully sourced by generally reputable data. I'd be just as pissed if Democrats sold us down the river, which I am about Obamacare several years ago.
peregrine··on Disapproval of FCC regulations a significant blow against privacy protection
Thank you for being transparent. It seems nearly everyday I see articles rise to the top of HN only to disappear when I return.

With no explanation or transparency for the reason.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13939514

For example was on the front page for less than 2 minutes before disappearing with zero discussion nor reasoning. Even though it contains extremely Hacker News friendly analysis and discussion.

HN needs to come clean, is the no politics rule continuing? Or are the politics of the moderators or the "politics deemed appropriate" going to continue to rule?

peregrine··on Disapproval of FCC regulations a significant blow against privacy protection
Because none of them received donations or were lobbied?
peregrine··on Disapproval of FCC regulations a significant blow against privacy protection
The Hacker News mods should comment why this post has been 'bumped' from the top spot and why it's title is no longer the original title of the article.

From the https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html:

> Otherwise please use the original title, unless it is misleading or linkbait.

The title is the original, it wasn't misleading and it isn't 'linkbait'. Its the premise of the article and it's the truth.

dang please help me out here.
