pera··on The Capitol Attack Doesn’t Justify Expanding Surveillance
Correct, that's why I used the word "ambiguous" (i.e. having or expressing more than one possible meaning).
pera··on The Capitol Attack Doesn’t Justify Expanding Surveillance
English is not my first language, but it seems an ambiguous slogan as the prefix de- not only means to remove but also to reduce / degrade. For instance, there were some recent calls for "defunding the Pentagon", in the sense of reducing military spending.

pera··on Parler removed from Google Play store
You are probably not aware of this but Parler is currently being used by hundreds, maybe thousands, of fanatic radicals to organise another violent insurrection on DC (on either January 19th or 20th), and there is literally zero moderation. I haven't seen this level of criminal organisation anywhere else on the internet before.

pera··on USA vs. Julian Assange Judgment
> Was it ever proved that he did?

No, which is why in the judgment every reference to a supposed attempt of "cracking a hash" is preceded by "alleged".

pera··on Quantum supremacy, now with BosonSampling
Yes but I don't understand how this can be seen as modelling anything but the experiment one is performing: the way I interpret this proof of quantum supremacy is (and again I know this is incorrect but don't know why) almost like selecting any physical phenomena to which a simulation of it is computationally hard, and then say that the result of this experiment is the returned value of a "computation". I feel it's almost like claiming you are going to simulate fluid dynamics with an actual water tank, some dye, and a camera.
pera··on Quantum supremacy, now with BosonSampling
I feel a bit embarrassed for asking, but can someone explain in layman's terms why the Gaussian boson sampling experiment proves quantum supremacy?

I believe my main confusion is why is this experiment being called a computation: to me this seems to be simply the observation of some physical phenomena which happens to be very hard to calculate with a classical computer.

Argentina is not really a good example for your argument as it is probably the most "open borders" country in the world.
pera··on Password-cracking theory against Assange unravels at extradition trial
> the real identity of many people involved with WikiLeaks seems to be unknown

It seems I wasn't clear before but this is exactly what I intended to imply: If they cannot attest that JA was the only member present at that conference then that line of argument is insufficient to make the claim they are making.

pera··on Password-cracking theory against Assange unravels at extradition trial
As far as I can tell they only state that for the conference in Norway: "[...] Assange was identified as a 'lecturer.' A review of the other names on the list revealed no other persons known to be associated with WikiLeaks"

To me the fact that they wrote "other persons known" indicates that they are not sure if there were other members present.

pera··on Password-cracking theory against Assange unravels at extradition trial
I still don't understand how the Eastern District of Virginia can claim that "Nathaniel Frank" was in fact Julian Assange. The reasoning presented in their affidavit looks clearly fallacious to me (starting at p13):

https://cdn.netzpolitik.org/wp-upload/2019/04/2017-12-21_Vir...

There are two assumptions they use to infer the identity of NF:

1- The belief of two persons that the person who they were talking with was probably Assange.

2- That only one single person was using that jabber account.

The only thing I can personally infer from the information they presented is that NF was (very likely) a member of Wikileaks at that time.

What am I missing?

AFAIK you don't need to add @specs everywhere to get useful warnings from Dialyzer (or Dialyxir) as it does some type inference and also the standard library is already annotated, but I only played with it one time so don't quote me on that.
pera··on Security by obscurity is underrated
> you'll still see scans on a regular basis.

Not in my experience, I would even say that full range port scanning is extremely rare. Botnets (again, in my experience) seem to only be interested in vanilla installations and will test standard ports exclusively. But of course, if you are in charge of some very tempting target (eg a cryptocurrency exchange) your experience will be totally different than mine.

Unfortunately we rely on registrars for too many things nowadays, which is probably as bad as our enormous trust on commercial certificate authorities.

I don't see the contradiction, it is similar to say "we ultimately need to stop burning fossil fuels" while using Internet and living in a city.

I am not sure that I understand your argument here: are you saying a person who is against animal testing shouldn't consume products that were tested on animals during their development? If that's the case I think that would be an unattainable standard of morality. Everything we are as a society and as individuals are in part thanks to our use of animals, and I don't think any PETA member denies this fact.

Even if this person abandoned all her belongings and moved to the middle of nowhere, all her knowledge is still the direct product of societies that have been using animals for (at least) the past 10,000 years.
