pera··on Flux Pinning in sample of LK-99?
The thread is horizontally positioned, left to right, not vertically.
pera··on Flux Pinning in sample of LK-99?
I meant that this video is a hoax. I don't hold any opinions regarding LK-99.
pera··on Flux Pinning in sample of LK-99?
Seriously? To me this looks like a chip of graphite glued to an invisible thread. The way the object moves is not what I would expect from magnetism (see second 10 for instance)
pera··on Flux Pinning in sample of LK-99?
This is an hoax and it's sad to see people like Sabine Hossenfelder falling for it so easily:

- video recorder in a kitchen or living room

- created by some random tiktok account

- no credentials, no description

- tagged "mysterious"

It's hard to understand how anyone would believe this, specially after so many other fakes

Twitter is basically broken if you don't login, compare this:

https://twitter.com/andrewmccalip

https://nitter.net/andrewmccalip

In Twitter the latest tweet I see is from July, in Nitter is 22 minutes ago. Additionally in Twitter I get 3 notices/popups that I need to close.

pera··on Huazhong University demonstrates LK-99 diamagnetism
In the fourth video the sample appears to be levitating at 00:19 if you see the space between the shadow and the object itself, hard to tell for sure though (the surface of the table is quite porous).

pera··on U.S. Senate bill crafted with DEA targets end-to-end encryption
> eavesdropping requires encryption to be breakable

This is false.

pera··on U.S. Senate bill crafted with DEA targets end-to-end encryption
This is about mass surveillance, not about court orders for wiretapping a person who is being investigated for a crime.

"normal" changes over time: a hundred years ago it wasn't normal to talk with literally all of your friends and family remotely all the time, nowadays it is.

Countries signatories of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights should respect Article 12:

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

pera··on B.C. government hit tweet limit amid wildfire evacuations
People use RSS for their podcasts, and they would use it for important government communications too if that was the official channel.
pera··on B.C. government hit tweet limit amid wildfire evacuations
Government agencies should use RSS or ActivityPub for all their communications, it's unacceptable that they depend on a private company like Twitter for this sort of things.

How did we get to this point?

pera··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?

Not much yet but I'm trying to get back to blogging (mostly STEM)

pera··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
A "browser" is a user agent: https://www.w3.org/WAI/UA/work/wiki/Definition_of_User_Agent
pera··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
Yeah but if they are simply detecting user agents with ad-blockers (which is often the case) then it won't matter
pera··on YouTube is testing a more aggressive approach against ad blockers
This is very bad: If you have ADHD ad-blockers are essential to use platforms like YouTube as they let you block comment sections and suggested content, which are highly distracting.
pera··on Why is it so rare to hear about Western cyber-attacks?
Yup same here. I actually wrote a script to visualize this like 10 years ago, had to cap China because the circle would have occupied all of Asia :P

Big e-mail providers are actually worse, they usually go like "so, a neighbour of yours sent something that somehow triggered our anti-spam system ages ago, so fuck your messages and fuck you, 221 Bye!"

At least on Mastodon you get the chance to talk to someone and try to solve the conflict.

pera··on France’s Mistral AI raises a $113M seed round to take on OpenAI
I agree and just to clarify: I don't think/know whether this startup will be successful or not, in fact I don't even know if buying DeepMind was a good investment for Google (financially speaking). I only mentioned it because the comments were very similar.
pera··on France’s Mistral AI raises a $113M seed round to take on OpenAI
It's funny, the comments here reminded me to this other submission (from 2014):

Google to Buy Artificial Intelligence Startup DeepMind for $400M

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7127938

> $400M for a company I've never heard before is quite surprising

> If the article is correct, they bought the team.

pera··on Why not tell people to “simply” use pyenv, poetry or anaconda
That might work for a subset of projects, but try that with anything that does for instance numerical analysis stuff, like machine learning. There is a reason why Conda is a requirement for so many Python projects.

The map in the senate report comes from this paper:

https://www.mdpi.com/2220-9964/9/6/402

if I understand correctly it concludes that the cluster correlates with population density and a concentration of elderly population in that area.

Unfortunately that wasn't mentioned in the senate report (nor in the news article)

pera··on Ask HN: Is it time to resurrect a Usenet clone?
The same is true in the world wide web and social networks.
pera··on How the DEA scrubbed Thomas jefferson's poppy garden from public memory
Yeah found it after posting the article, although I wouldn't say it contradicts the story (except for the title), this is my interpretation: random DEA agent sees something [1] that looks probably illegal during a visit and notifies Monticello, Monticello then attempts to confirm this with DEA through more official channels, who then clarifies that it is technically illegal but they wont persecute, even then Monticello decides to remove the plants and seeds [2].

1- `A DEA man noticed the store was selling packets of "Thomas Jefferson's Monticello Poppies."`

2- `Nobody told them to do this, but, under the circumstances, no one dared risk the threat`

pera··on How the DEA scrubbed Thomas jefferson's poppy garden from public memory
I really don't know anything about this topic but according to the DEA it is "technically" illegal:

pera··on Flipper Zero Self Destructs an Electricity Smart Meter
It really depends on the country: In the UK smart meters are relatively secure (see SMKI for example)
pera··on I ditched my car – and improved my fitness, sleep and bank balance
Me neither: I have lived in 3 continents and about a dozen cities and never owned a car. The only time the idea of owning a car ever came to my mind was when I lived in a small town in the US with almost no public transport and where the nearest grocery store was 40 minutes cycling distance, but I got used to it pretty quickly.
