pera··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan's online rant spurs threats to supes, police reports
Unfortunately social media doesn't recompensate those using a measured tone to communicate with others, civility seems to be ineffective nowadays if your objective is to produce any political impact because outrage (as a conduit for discourse) spreads more easily.
pera··on Gitlab's ActivityPub architecture blueprint
Is the European Union’s Digital Markets Act relevant here?

IIRC Meta now has to implement interoperability with other chat apps like Signal, I wonder if GitHub will have to do the same through AP soon

pera··on ChatGPT does Advent of Code 2023
Thank you. I can't find any clear comparison between ChatGPT Plus and gpt-4 (through the API) on that article though, it seems to be focused on how to improve results with gpt-3.5? I was expecting some benchmarks
pera··on ChatGPT does Advent of Code 2023
Would you mind providing a link? The only post I found on Algolia when searching for "max woolf" over the past month is yours :)
pera··on ChatGPT does Advent of Code 2023
Interesting, do these extra features have an impact on code generation?
pera··on ChatGPT does Advent of Code 2023
I'm confused, is the gpt-4 model used through the API different to the gpt-4 from ChatGPT Plus? I can't find clear information on their website.
pera··on Ask HN: What is the current driver of tech layoffs?
If you feel my argument is in bad faith it would be useful if you could provide evidence for OP's opinions. I personally find the comment quite uninsightful, unfounded and specially disrespectful towards those affected by this new wave of layoffs.
pera··on Ask HN: What is the current driver of tech layoffs?
> The quality of your average tech worker has completely nosedived in the last 10-15 years

I find this opinion hilarious: Almost 30 years ago the second most popular software product was Windows 95 (Doom was the #1), which couldn't run for a few hours without BSODing. Almost 20 years ago the average tech worker was building atrocities with Visual Basic, MS Access and PHP.

Meanwhile today it was announced that Google decided to lay off several compiler engineers working on LLVM, but sure, please tell me more about those low quality bootcamp kiddos that are ruining everything...

pera··on Elixir is now a gradually typed language

pera··on A clickjacking vulnerability in WhatsApp that enables phishing attacks
I know you are referring to those fake KeePass malware ads, but just to clarify: the issue I reported was not related to AdWords - it was for normal search results
pera··on A clickjacking vulnerability in WhatsApp that enables phishing attacks
I reported a similar issue to Google early this year and they declined the submission because it "can only result from social engineering" and "we think that addressing it would not make our users significantly less vulnerable".

I won't mention the details here but Google Search sometimes rewrite URLs in such way that an attacker can spoof the actual URL.

My advice is to never trust URLs displayed by websites and apps.

pera··on Xorg being removed. What does this mean?
It would be difficult if distros stop including an Xorg package, which is what many Wayland proponents are pushing for.
pera··on Xorg being removed. What does this mean?
I genuinely don't understand why many Wayland proponents are so eager to destroy the experience of millions of Linux users who currently depend on Xorg. It's very selfish and also decremental for the popularity of Wayland as it creates unnecessary conflict.
pera··on He blew the whistle on Amazon. He's still paying the price
> Western companies apparently DO NOT CARE

They do care about profit margins, which is why they outsource slavery.

pera··on Show HN: A Dalle-3 and GPT4-Vision feedback loop
substitute corgi with paperclip and you get another meme becoming real :p
pera··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
Please disregard my last comment, it was a premature opinion on a situation that is still developing and very unclear from the outside
pera··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
I didn't believe that OpenAI was being honest in their mission statement before - I thought it was just the typical bay area "we want to make the world a better place" bs.

This entire situation changed my mind radically and now I put the non-profit part in my personal top 3 dream jobs :)

pera··on Passive SSH Key Compromise via Lattices [pdf]
> We also carry out a retrospective analysis of historical SSH scan data collected over the course of seven years, and find that these invalid signatures and vulnerable devices are surprisingly common over time.

> Our combined dataset of around 5.2 billion SSH records contained more than 590,000 invalid RSA signatures.

Am I reading this right? This is about 1 in 10_000, this is way more common that what I would have imagined

pera··on They can and will ruin everything you love
The blog was truly fantastic, discovered several great bands and a few obscure genres. I didn't use the social feature either but my guess is that it was good for the musicians.
pera··on FBI warns against using public USB charging ports
> By default they only charge.

My Fairphone 4 with vanilla Android 11 when connected to a USB C monitor will immediately mirror the screen without any sort of notification, so an evil charging port could at least record everything I do, no zero days required.

pera··on Stockholm to ban petrol and diesel cars from centre from 2025
I think it's absolutely crazy that our society is OK with car drivers polluting the air with carcinogenic particles. I hope more cities around the world implement similar bans soon.
pera··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
This is the actual quote from Breton, EU Commissioner for Internal Market:

> The next job for Apple and other Big Tech, under the DMA (Digital Markets Act) is to open up its gates to competitors, be it the electronic wallet, browsers or app stores, consumers using an Apple iPhone should be able to benefit from competitive services by a range of providers

pera··on I moved states just before the return-to-office order at Amazon, so I quit
At work we are hybrid but the reality is that very few people likes to go to the office, single digit % I would say. Sometimes I'm literally the only person in the entire building.
pera··on Seriously Consider Skipping the Drinks (2022)
I don't understand why we use vague terms like "moderation" when we could just use numbers. In the UK "in moderation" is 14 units per week, and IIRC it used to be higher.

There was some study posted here many years ago that showed a clear increase risk of cancer starting at 5 units per week, so don't drink more than 2 pints/week (or 1 pint if you like Belgian ales like me :P)

pera··on Call to shut down Bristol schools’ use of app to ‘monitor’ pupils and families
The council provides a data flow diagram showing the source of the data:

https://www.bristol.gov.uk/files/documents/5972-insight-bris...

pera··on UK Parliament undermined the privacy, security, freedom of all internet users
The paper you are citing does not support your argument here, I would suggest you to read for instance section 6.3 where they include some of the common concerns regarding client-side scanning, or the conclusion of section 7 ("Why AI and Machine Learning are not the answer").
pera··on Amazon training video on handling unionizing activity (2018) [video]
The "Threaten. Interrogate. Promise. Spy." (TIPS) section where they explain how to legally do those things is fucking crazy.

For some reason I thought that intentionally looking for ways to circumvent laws in this way was kinda illegally

pera··on Arxiv.org is experiencing a DDoS attack
Not from China but yes, usually they are very quick to respond, it's crucial for most ISPs to maintain a good reputation.
pera··on Fossil fuels being subsidised at rate of $13M a minute, says IMF
Just to clarify, implicit subsidies is defined as "undercharging for environmental costs and forgone consumption taxes", so I don't understand why you would call this "clickbait-y". For explicit subsidies it was $2.473.364 USD per minute in 2022.
