peppertree··on A rigid but foldable indoor airship aerial system for cave exploration
The idea is cool but none of the design decisions made sense. Why would you need carbon fiber struts. Airship that size doesn't have to deal with pressure changes there was no reason to be semi rigid. Where do you attach the sensor payload. Anywhere above the very bottom is going to be unstable with the vertical design. But that's also the worst place for vision & lidar sensors.
peppertree··on LinkedIn is now using everyone's content to train their AI tool
AI is about to learn what a tragic car accident can teach them about leadership and drop shipping.
peppertree··on Lightweight radio transmitters on birds, bats and insects
Does anyone have more in-depth technical details on these trackers? I assume they are UHF transmitters that require directional scanners?
peppertree··on Powerful, Open-Source, Programmatic CAD
Libfive is the closest successor. Blender also starts to support implicit modeling. https://libfive.com/
peppertree··on Intel is on life support. Can anything save it?
US government is going to keep bailing Intel out until it has a competitive fab. Intel is going to be the new Boeing/GM.
peppertree··on Learning to Reason with LLMs
That's odd. Tried several times with the same prompt and always got the correct answer with step by step explanation.
peppertree··on Learning to Reason with LLMs
4.9 is larger than 4.11.

Explanation:

• 4.9 is equivalent to 4.90. • 4.11 remains 4.11.

When comparing the numbers:

• 4.90 (which is 4.9) • 4.11

Since 4.90 > 4.11, 4.9 is the larger number.

peppertree··on How on-the-wrist sleep apnea detection works
Waiting for fda.
peppertree··on Show HN: Repaint – a WebGL based website builder
Text and css are both endless pits of undefined behavior. But this would make a great ad builder.
peppertree··on Godot on iPad, Toolbars, Importers, Embedding, Debugger
Is this an open source project? I would like to try this, especially after reading about all the little ux touches, but I wasn’t able to find any links.
peppertree··on Ever used Google Chrome in incognito mode? You could be entitled to up to $5k
"full self driving" vibes.
peppertree··on Microsoft donates the Mono Project to the Wine team
Never miss a good tax write-off.
peppertree··on Apple splits App Store team in two, introduces new leadership
I think you made a fair point AppStore is now under Schiller who reports directly to Cook, no longer under Eddy Cue. AppStore is big enough to be its own group not having to answers to service, software, or marketing. It's a digital goods store more parallel to retail.
peppertree··on Apple splits App Store team in two, introduces new leadership
Can you site any references to back that up? AppStore came out of iTunes and has always been part of services under Eddy Cue.
peppertree··on Introducing passkey support to Fastmail
FaceID.
peppertree··on Apple is America's semiconductor problem
The key difference is corporations are managed top down by competent actors that understand the market, and there's consequence to mismanagement.
peppertree··on Apple is America's semiconductor problem
Apple is a proxy of what people want. The Soviet has already tried top down supply chain management and it did not work.
peppertree··on Gear Acquisition Syndrome
Is there a study on the guilt that comes with over acquiring gears.
peppertree··on Show HN: Muky – A kid-friendly music player for iOS
The copy says "for kids", but the music selection in your screenshot says 40 yo man.
peppertree··on Microsoft stock drops over 6% after results fall short in AI disappointment
I pay for ChatGPT pro subscription and I use it far more than Google these days. I believe OpenAI can unseat Google but it's going to take far longer than one quarter.
peppertree··on Are people too flawed, ignorant, and tribal for open societies?
If democrats doesn't win next election and balance the supreme court there won't be another fair election in us for a long time.
peppertree··on TinyPod – Apple Watch case with scroll wheel
Watch Ultra are very capable mobile devices. This came out of left field but I can see it working for some.
peppertree··on iOS 18 could 'sherlock' $400M in app revenue
This is a sensational exaggeration. Apple maps new trail feature only covers selective few national parks. Knowing apple nothing will be crowd sourced so it's really can't compete with most trail apps out there.
peppertree··on [dead]
In pop culture that’s called a diss.
peppertree··on Apple Vision Pro U.S. Sales Are All but Dead, Market Analysts Say
The relationship is transactional. If there's money to be made developers will be there. The core problem is there's no killer app for Vision Pro and price is way to high to be a impulsive purchase for most.
peppertree··on How I turned seemingly 'failed' experiments into a successful PhD
I don't think the author was trying to position herself as "special". It's a pretty universal experience to try something unkonwn and feeling like a failure. I think the author is trying to convey that it's ok to feel that way.
peppertree··on Google's carbon emissions surge nearly 50% due to AI energy demand
Pretty sure people said the same about fiber internet in the 2000's.
peppertree··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
I live near Santa Clara area so I scanned the EPA report. It mentioned improperly covered activated charcoal and possible improper storage of chemicals, but no mention of releasing solvent vapor in open air. Apple absolutely should be held at higher standard especially operating near residential and school areas, but in this case it looks like a disgruntled ex employee trying to settle a score. I don't think this belongs on HN.
peppertree··on Generating audio for video
I wonder if this can be trained to do lip reading.
peppertree··on Gavin Newsom wants to take smartphones out of schools
Apple should jump ahead of the problem and allow schools to control screen time and focus modes.
