pentagrama··on Ask HN: Alternatives to the email masking service Firefox Relay?
Thank you, I guess I can't use that because I don't have iPhone/Mac.
pentagrama··on Ask HN: Alternatives to the email masking service Firefox Relay?
That looks good, thank you. And being owned by Proton give me more trust, the other suggested here https://addy.io/ not that much.
pentagrama··on Netflix is removing offline downloads from its Windows app
How awful way to announce a redesign, is dark comedy a la Coen Brothers.

For the affected users who use that feature, at least is available on the browser? For at least Chrome desktop on Windows should work, not sure about Firefox. YouTube Premium just recently enable the feature for Firefox (or Firefox for YouTube, don't know).

pentagrama··on Magic UI: UI Library for Design Engineers
Wow I always want to analyze the products and highlight the positives that I found, but at least on Firefox mobile this site was unbearable slow to the point that I have to quit. And being a site build with the product it promotes, it speaks volumes, sorry.

A more honest title to me:

pentagrama··on Introducing Copilot+ PCs
Yes, and Lenovo is releasing a new Qualcomm-powered ThinkPad, which are known to be a Linux-friendly laptops.

> The ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 is, of course, business-focused. It will have the same Snapdragon chip, storage capacity, and webcam but will support up to 64GB of memory and one of three 14-inch display options: an IPS with up to 400 nits of brightness; an IPS touch display; or an OLED that covers 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut, also with 400 nits of brightness.

>Lenovo expects the Yoga Slim 7x 14 Gen 9 to start at $1,199 and the ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 to start at $1,699. Both will be available in June.

pentagrama··on I don't want to spend my one precious life dealing with Google's AI search
The AI hype is so big and tech companies are blinded by this, is incredible that Google ship this to his first and flagship product on by default to many users, and not opt out option (I conclude that by the OP article).

I remember see Google launching features off by default with some nagging to turning on, but this is so greedy and dictated by the race on AI, every company want to have AI on their branding like the popular girls on Mean Girls want to be in that group.

pentagrama··on I don't want to spend my one precious life dealing with Google's AI search
Why so many comments recommending switch browser from Google Chrome to Firefox? This is a Web Google Search feature right? If is only enabled on Chrome now I'm sure will soon be enabled on other browsers.

I also encourage to switch to Firefox, but in this case to escape this feature is changing the default search engine on your browser, which I recommend Kagi (paid without ads) or Duck Duck Go (free with ads).

pentagrama··on Dutch woman, 29, granted euthanasia approval on grounds of mental suffering
Your comment resonates with me because I remembered the Spanish movie Mar Adentro, who explores that topic on a nuanced way to me. I recommend that movie to anyone reading this who is interested on the topic and likes good fiction.
pentagrama··on The Downfall of DeviantArt
The site in question to judge yourself https://www.deviantart.com/
pentagrama··on Tim Cook is running out of ideas
Yes, to me Apple lately didn't launch a groundbreaking or good consumer product like the iPod, MacBook, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, only good copycats like HomePod (Alexa), Apple Music (Spotify), Apple TV Plus (Netflix), AirTag (Tile), or bad copycats Vision Pro (Meta Quest).

But let's say from 2015 to today, what new groundbreaking or innovative consumer product was launched? I can only count Chat GPT. Stadia was innovative but failed. Self-driving cars are a thing but there are not yet for prime time.

pentagrama··on Caniwebview.com – Like Caniuse but for Webviews
Feedback: Was looking around all the site to find a section who explains what is Webview and can't find it. Should be some explanation.

What is that? Like a hidden browser that comes with the different OSs?

pentagrama··on Bypass Paywalls Clean (now available on GitHub after being removed from Gitlab)

pentagrama··on Please don't share our links on Mastodon
Not the best solution for them, but what about remove the metadata from the pages <head> that let Mastodon and other social media platforms request for the preview images? It will hurt discoverability and clicks maybe, but is better than the site having downtimes.
pentagrama··on Arc Browser for Windows, now generally available
Installed it, fancy onboarding for gen z and all that, but wow, a wall of mandatory Arc account creation to start using the browser. At least they require * only * email.

Thanks that email mask services like Firefox Relay exists, I'm using it for everything lately, with the push of surveillance from tech companies and data breaches I feel a bit safer at least.

pentagrama··on Self-hosting forms, the sane way
A fully self hosted solution that for me is good enough and more easy is a WordPress site with the plugin WPforms (free version). No third party services used.

Update: not sure if the WPforms free version supports file uploads as the OP needs.

pentagrama··on Tiny World Map
This runs really smoothly on my midrange phone. On the GitHub page it doesn't mention if there is translated versions, I will consider it if there is a version in Spanish.
pentagrama··on The Curse of Monkey Island
This was the first Monkey Island game I played.

I remember getting my first PC at thirteen and have some pirated games on it, Quake 2, Descent Freespace, Moto Racer (Enter your name!), and The Curse of Monkey Island was something different, so wholesome and funny, I was in love with Elaine, it also make me interested on storytelling, I guess because of that game I started to watch more movies and read more books.

And this game have the option to hear all the voices on Spanish, it wasn't something common, so me knowing no English at all, it was a new gaming experience and the connection was deeper.

pentagrama··on AI Has Made Google Search So Bad People Are Moving to TikTok and Reddit
For many searches I'm using Chat GPT now. No ads, cleaner, text only, I can ask follow up questions.

I can't ask (yet) what's the weather today or Champions League matches today. Also I know it might has errors, but Google Search first results are doubtful this days.

I look up some searches that I did on Chat GPT lately:

- Types of leucemia

- Miles davis discography

- Hour difference between Buenos Aires and Bogotá

- What's Romeo and Juliet is about

It is great to me. Besides TikTok and Reddit I will add Chat GPT to the Google Search list of current threats.

pentagrama··on DuckDuckGo Privacy Pro
Is odd to me that this company choose to use the domain spreadprivacy.com to promote his products. Not the best branding approach to gain naming recognition and trust.

For informational sites (no login/special features) I recommend WordPress.

pentagrama··on Show HN: Ragdoll Studio (fka Arthas.AI) is the FOSS alternative to character.ai
Similar to https://faraday.dev/ that also runs locally. I wish I can install on desktop like Faraday to try it.
pentagrama··on IrfanView
That one! Thank you. Nostalgia hit hard.
pentagrama··on How GitHub replaced SourceForge as the dominant code hosting platform
Designer here, upon reading this, I found myself intrigued by Git [1]; it sounds awesome!

Do you know if there is a free and open-source software version control like Git but for UI? I know in Figma there is version control, even branches. But I'm thinking about something not proprietary and not attached to a tool.

And a more fundamental question, knowing Git, do you think that a version control for UI it is possible like what Git does for code?

pentagrama··on IrfanView
Around 2000-2007 I used something similar to this one (Windows XP/7 times), I can't recall the name right now.

Someone remember other popular image viewers at the time?

pentagrama··on Canva has acquired Affinity in an effort to compete with Adobe
I love Affinity Designer as a tool and his pay once license, I'm pretty sure that if you already purchased current version (V2), you will be fine, but I'm afraid they will go the subscription route soon like Adobe and Canva.

Is suspicious that Affinity marketing was always highlighting the pay once license model and against subscription, and in the official announcement there is no mention of that.

A lesson is that with the good ol Inkscape that type of thing that endangered the tool it doesn't happen.

pentagrama··on Ahead of IPO, Reddit blends advertising into user posts

pentagrama··on RSS was released 25 years ago today
Thanks to my RSS feed curation, I often hear from friends, "Wow, I can't believe you missed that! It was all over the news this week" and also "Hey, that's interesting! Where do you find all this stuff?".
