pentagrama··on Microsoft donates the Mono Project to the Wine team
A bit off-topic, but this makes me wonder about the relationship between Microsoft and Wine. Do they consider it a threat? An ally? Both?

This is my first time seeing Microsoft acknowledge Wine's existence, and in this case, it was at least in a friendly manner? Or could there be bad faith behind this 'donation'?

pentagrama··on Notes on Buttondown.com
How did you handle that users with saved credentials on password managers for.email now didn't get the autofill feature when redirected to .com?
pentagrama··on Apple Adopts 6 of OWA's Browser Choice Architecture Recommendations
I want to suggest to OWA adding a new recommendation that is to lets users set an 'Always ask' setting when opening links.

For Windows, I use this "browser" app as my default browser. Its main function is to show a list of installed browsers (including customizable options) whenever a link is opened from another app, allowing you to choose which browser to use. It's great! Recommended if you use different browsers for different things https://github.com/mortenn/BrowserPicker

pentagrama··on ScreenPlay Is an Open Source Live-Wallpaper App for Windows and OS X
Windows user here, exited to try this, but on the download page [1] the link to download the installer didn't work as expected to me. I don't see an exe/msi file to download here [2].

Any solution?

pentagrama··on Mpv – A free, open-source, and cross-platform media player
Thanks for your response. Understand. So MPV may not be for me, I don't know how to use a command line app, I remember have to use to fix an Ubuntu issue and the UX was painful to me.
pentagrama··on Mpv – A free, open-source, and cross-platform media player
Happy VLC user here, but might give this a try, I want to find a better UX with the player controls, like a way to pin the controls bar when full screen (it disappears after some seconds), a 10s forward/backwards control, bigger buttons, less bloated settings, less features that I don't use like radio and other stuff.

But one thing that confused me seeing that homepage is that it shows a player UI screenshot, but it says " mpv is a free (as in freedom) media player for the command line", isn't just for the command line right? I assume you can install it as an app and it has an UI like VLC. (I'm on the phone rn will check it on my PC later).

pentagrama··on Show HN: I made an open-source personal dashboard builder
It's really nice to see a "link in bio" product that is open source and self-hostable.

I would like to see how the page editor looks and works, but there are no screenshots on the GitHub page (https://github.com/tryglow/glow) or in the hosted version (https://glow.as/).

pentagrama··on Apple vs. the "Free Market"
I agree with some opinions and the sentiment of this article, but in some parts the author, perhaps unintentionally, makes false or misleading claims to simply provoke outrage and demonize Apple. For example:

> Every artist, performer and creator on Patreon is about to get screwed out of 30% of their gross revenue, which will be diverted to Apple.

This is inaccurate, as not all Patreon subscribers use iOS devices to support creators.

pentagrama··on Foobar2000
Back in the day this was the hardcore nerds' Winamp!
pentagrama··on Attribution is dying, clicks are dying
This. And for example, that is why I'm just using ChatGPT to get recipes to cook; it is so much better, right to the point, no ads, follow-up questions, etc. I know the moral argument about ChatGPT being trained and monetizing other people's work, but it is just so easy and has better UX.

And regarding "The way forward is to go where your audience is being influenced," that this marketer says, for my case and the his “best rice to make risotto.” case, they can't do SEO on ChatGPT (at least for now). ChatGPT doesn't even show/link to sources like Gemini; they are screwed.

This process of

1. Scrap content.

2. Train/mix.

3. Show new mixed content without sources.

is a nightmare for them.

pentagrama··on Why I left Google
I personally loved the tangent to a more spiritual side, probably a moral/tech/ai topic that is pretty common this days will make me skip it.
pentagrama··on Ask HN: Can anyone from Crowdstrike explain the back story?
I think they don't share specific details because it will reveal how bad they handle QA and update rollouts processes for a product that expensive, maybe at some point law enforcement will reveal the embarrassing truth.
pentagrama··on "Firefox added [ad tracking] and has already turned it on without asking you"
I checked and is true that is enabled by default. The "Learn more" link on the setting lands here:

>PPA is enabled in Firefox starting in version 128. A small number of sites are going to test this and provide feedback to inform our standardization plans, and help us understand if this is likely to gain traction. PPA can be disabled in Firefox settings.

pentagrama··on Plausible Community Edition
The treats and risks from "corporations" described can be true, but if you are a small site using the self hosted version, this isn't good news. The product will not be fully featured as the managed version, and the feature gap may be bigger and bigger on the long term. CE is like a "free basic plan" that you host, they now have a better reason to up-sell the users of the self hosted product to the managed "premium" version.
pentagrama··on Let's stop counting centuries
I got a fight recently with a philosophy teacher about that, I changed the dates like the op to be more clear on my writing, she took it so seriously, it was a big fight about clarity vs. tradition but really superficial and mean on both sides. Now I wish to be* more articulate and have a good debate. I wrote it in my way on the final exam and approved, she had to deal with it I guess.

* Sorry, I don't know how to write that in past, like haber sido in Spanish, my main language.

pentagrama··on Copy and Paste context menu entries sometimes disabled when they should not be
It happened to me two or tree times on Wikipedia. When selecting text and right click, the copy item was disabled, I restarted Firefox and the copy field was enabled. Is funny how I never stopped to think about it till now seeing this post.
pentagrama··on 25 years of video clips gone as Paramount axes Comedy Central wesbite
At least crate a YouTube channel as a archive and upload the videos there. Will mantain te brand presence, avoid some backlash, and maybe earn some money with ad revenue.
pentagrama··on Slack updates retention policy for free workspaces
I always want something like that as a feature. For a hobby project on a free plan I prefer have an auto delete feature and choose the timeframe.
pentagrama··on Donald Sutherland has died
I find it odd that I don't recall ever watching a movie with Donald Sutherland. MASH is one of the few Robert Altman films I still need to watch, so here we go.
pentagrama··on YouTube embeds ads into videos to beat ad blockers
Not sure if the mention of the SponsorBlock browser extension in the article is correct.

To my knowledge, this extension doesn't block programmatic ads (off-stream) like regular ad blockers do. Instead, it "blocks" ads that creators include in their videos (e.g., "This video is sponsored by Squarespace") by automatically skipping these segments using crowdsourced timestamp data reported by users. It's similar to how you can manually jump ahead on the video timeline.

I believe this extension was affected by YouTube's recent changes because now some videos are longer due to on-stream ads, causing the timestamps to be out of sync for users watching these videos.

However, I could be mistaken.

pentagrama··on You can help Anna's Archive by seeding torrents
I want to help but I guess I'm not being able to, maybe someone can help me.

I want to give 5GB (don't have much storage), so I put "Max TB:0.005" and "Type:URLs".

It give me this url:

https://annas-archive.org/dyn/generate_torrents?max_tb=0.005...

Who has this two torrent files:

https://annas-archive.org/dyn/small_file/torrents/external/l...

https://annas-archive.org/dyn/small_file/torrents/external/l...

I put that torrents on Transmission, one is 5GB and the other 4MB, the 5GB is not downloading/seeding, the 4MB was downloaded and is seeding:

Any help?

pentagrama··on Flameshot – Open-source screenshot software
The UI and features look well-polished. I use ShareX, another open-source tool but only available for Windows. However, a crucial feature for me is quick screen recording (GIF or MP4), which Flameshot seems to lack. Does it have this feature? It's not mentioned on the landing page.
pentagrama··on Microsoft Recall should make you consider Linux
To me, the most important way to make more people use Linux is for manufacturers to start shipping PCs and laptops with a hardware-tested, user-friendly, and trusted Linux distro like Ubuntu.

Sadly, the "make you consider" part of the article title here is not applicable for most people, but of course is valid and good.

pentagrama··on The state of SourceHut and our plans for the future
> could have used some further explanation

They are not obligated to explain what happened in more detail. Your comment sounds like someone speculating about why a celebrity couple broke up when they release a brief public message announcing their separation.

pentagrama··on Dr Pepper is now as popular as Pepsi. It's still shrouded in mystery
> Dr Pepper is now as popular as Pepsi [on US][1]

[1] > had joined Pepsi to become the nation’s second-best-selling soda.

Also, to me Popular != Best selling.

pentagrama··on Standard Ebooks' 1,000th title: Ulysses
Thank you!
pentagrama··on Libadwaita: Splitting GTK and Design Language
I remember being annoyed by those text buttons, looking at the latest iteration of Material, it looks like they keep the "text" button style but as a secondary option https://m3.material.io/components/all-buttons

Looking at the examples I think that it works in some contexts, but is a personal feel that I have.

pentagrama··on Standard Ebooks' 1,000th title: Ulysses
> Standard Ebooks' 1,000th title: Ulysses

On that page I'm not finding that is the 1,000th title, and browsing around the site I can't find a counter either. I trust the OP who choose that title is right, but there is any title counter on the Standard Ebooks website?

pentagrama··on Researchers cracked an 11-year-old password to a $3M crypto wallet
I was completely engrossed throughout the entire article, and by the end, I was left eagerly wanting to know what the password was. I guess I've watched too many movies.
pentagrama··on Ask HN: Alternatives to the email masking service Firefox Relay?
Thank you, but I use Gmail with Google Workspace/Custom domain, so I don't want to be attached to an email service (Only if Google Workspace add that feature, which I don't think so).
