pentagrama··on Prometheus 3.0
I didn't know this tool, and looking the homepage, is not clear to me if is something like Google Analytics to get metrics of website traffic, or something more dev oriented.

Someone can explain to me please? Maybe I'm a bit lost because I'm not a dev. I'm a designer considering selfhosted Google Analytics alternatives and this one may be interesting to add to the research (so far I have Matomo, plausible, open panel, umami, open replay, highlight). Thanks

Good luck! What's the difference between MSI and EXE for the Windows installer?

It means, it is different if the service goes down to 100, 50, 10 percent of users. I watched the show with no issues.
pentagrama··on Show HN: Jelly – A simpler shared inbox for small teams
This is one of those tools that do one thing and do it very well. Also the pricing is convenient. Congratulations to the creators.

If you want to go the open source + self hosted route, Chatwoot [1] [2] may be for you. It is more feature rich (or bloated, depending what you need) and complex to set up, defined as "Open-source live-chat, email support, omni-channel desk. An alternative to Intercom, Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud etc.", and it has a shared inbox feature [3].

pentagrama··on Pagination widows, or, why I'm embarrassed about my eBook (2023)
I love the PDF format in many ways. Its adoption is widespread, so you can send it with confidence. It's an ISO standard, "self-contained" (a single file, unlike HTML). However, something I’d love for the specification to incorporate is responsive design, which would significantly improve accessibility given the proliferation of mobile devices.

I think a more accurate title may be:

pentagrama··on Today is Ubuntu's 20th Anniversary
Installed Ubuntu LTS on some family members PCs who use it for web browsing and Libre Office, and they are so happy, they got no issues, and I'm chill because I know they will not get OS ads, auto installed apps, or crap like that. Thanks Canonical. What a solid and user friendly OS.

Will have to go to their homes to change Ublock Origin for the lite version since they use Chrome tho. I think the developer should choose to update the V2 with the V3 on the Chrome Store.

pentagrama··on Running an open source app: Usage, costs and community donations
I tested the app and found it awesome that it doesn't require account creation! You just get a private link, share it with the group, and when they open the link, it asks who they are to 'log in' as themselves. Of course, users could game the system by logging in as other members, but I think it's a compromise the developer made, knowing the user base and how frictionless it makes the user experience. Neat.
pentagrama··on Apple Passwords’ generated strong password format
It sounds like a clever design giving the complex topic, I will like to read some qualitative and quantitative research with real users to validate the design.

And when reading this I was thinking, what about Chinese logographic writing system or Arabic alphabet? Apple has a similar password design solution but for those cases?

pentagrama··on Using Cloudflare on your website could be blocking RSS users
Can you whitelists urls to be readead by bot on Cloudflare? Maybe this is a good solution, and there you can put your RSS feeds, sitemaps, and other content for bots. Also Cloudflare can make a dedicated fields to whitelists RSS and Sitemaps on the admin panel so users can discover more easily that they may don't want block those bots.

Can you whitelist URLs to be read by bots on Cloudflare? Maybe this is a good solution, where you as a site mantainer can include your RSS feeds, sitemaps, and other content for bots.

Also, Cloudflare could ship a feature by creating a dedicated section in the admin panel to let the user add and whitelist RSS feeds and sitemaps, making it easier (and educate) users to avoid blocking those bots who aren't a threat to your site, of course sill considering rules to avoid DDOS on this urls, like massive requests or stuff that common bots from RSS readers don't do.

pentagrama··on Show HN: A fair Product Hunt alternative
It looks nice. Please consider respecting the 'open in a new tab' feature for the product links. I tried using the middle mouse button, but it brought up the scroll control instead.
pentagrama··on Google's Chrome Browser Starts Disabling uBlock Origin
> uBlock’s own uBlock Origin Lite, which uses Manifest V3 and has received positive reviews on the Chrome Web Store. Still, the ad blocker’s developer Raymond Hill has said the Lite version can’t match the full capabilities of the original uBlock Origin.

To me the developer should update the current v2 version with the new approved v3 version. Yes, is worse but at the end of the day is better for those 40M of users [1]. I'm speculating but I think he don't want to show defeat, maybe some ego is involved there.

pentagrama··on Turn your old laptop into low-end gaming machine
It's not great for gaming, but I remember when I had an old Toshiba laptop from 2011 at my mom's house running Windows 10, it was painfully slow and practically unusable. I installed Ubuntu, and the performance improved significantly. It became usable for web browsing and light tasks.

Ubuntu is often a better choice for older hardware because it's less resource-intensive compared to Windows, and also you get the plus of avoid Window's nagging for Microsoft account sign in, products and ads.

pentagrama··on "Begin disabling installed extensions still using Manifest V2 in Chrome stable"
This V3 version will be pushed as a regular update on the current V2 version before is disabled? I think that must be done now to avoid even the alerts on users.
pentagrama··on Chrome Canary just killed uBlock Origin and other Manifest V2 extensions
Isn't impolite, is all good. But I don't want to deal with the possible issues, sorry.
pentagrama··on "Begin disabling installed extensions still using Manifest V2 in Chrome stable"
> Users will be directed to the Chrome Web Store, where they will be recommended Manifest V3 alternatives for their disabled extension.

I'm curious about which extensions will be recommended to replace uBlock Origin after it's disabled. I'm sure those alternatives will see a surge in installs.

Also, why doesn't the creator of uBlock Origin update the V2 version to the V3 version? I know V3 version isn't as good as V2, but if you're developing that product, at least give your users something instead of leaving them with nothing. Otherwise, they may end up choosing poor alternatives.

pentagrama··on Chrome Canary just killed uBlock Origin and other Manifest V2 extensions
Thank you but will be too difficult change browser. They usually have the whole Google ecosystem, for example password autofill on Android is not good with Firefox pass manager, with Chrome the UX is good. Stuff like that. I know is sad but I don't want to create issues on they digital lives.
pentagrama··on Internet Archive: Security breach alert
The reported alert on the site states:

> Have you ever felt like the Internet Archive runs on sticks and is constantly on the verge of suffering a catastrophic security breach? It just happened. See 31 million of you on HIBP!

But is this an official message from the company? It sounds odd and unprofessional, especially the "See 31 million of you on HIBP!" part, which jokingly refers to a huge privacy issue for users. Could it also be that the site was hacked, with hackers posting that message in addition to the data breach and DDoS attack?

pentagrama··on Chrome Canary just killed uBlock Origin and other Manifest V2 extensions
Thank you. Looks polished and trustworthy.

Do you know if it has nagging with upsells to the paid products that they offer?

pentagrama··on Chrome Canary just killed uBlock Origin and other Manifest V2 extensions
I use Firefox so I'm fine.

But what should I do with the not so tech savvy family members and friends that use Chrome and I installed Ublock origin? Install the lite version? Other alternative?

I'm sorry to say that will be impossible to make them switch to Firefox.

pentagrama··on Anime is eating the world
It’s really hard to grasp how for-profit intentions influence the way art is studied, analyzed, and broken down through that lens. Corporations, driven by commercial interests, often view art not as a cultural or aesthetic value in itself, but as a resource to be exploited or a vehicle for profitability, and this article is a great example of this, who distorts the creative and critical process, reducing art to a product that can be segmented, commodified, and shaped to meet market demands, disregarding its original essence.
pentagrama··on Court orders Google to uninstall pirate IPTV app sideloaded on Android devices
I use a less risky/shady version of the MagisTV app with Stremio [1] and the Torrentio extension [2]. Stremio is available legally on the Play Store, and I installed it on my Chromecast with Google TV/Android phone/Windows PC, it's awesome. The shady part is installing the Torrentio extension.

This setup allows you to stream pirated movies and series with a clean UI. You can search for movies in a IMDB-like database, save them to watch later using the library feature, add subtitles, select streaming quality, and the extension syncs with your Stremio account, so you only need to install it once and it works across all your devices. I suspect this might get shut down soon due to legal pressure. MagisTV offers live TV, sports, and more, so the pressure from corporations is even greater.

Of course, if your ISP monitors you for pirated content, you could get into trouble if you don't use a VPN. However, in my country, it's not a big deal since a lot of people use torrents. Piracy is likely more common in South America compared to the US or Europe.

Is so important have people with that spark to see and fix those little UX issues, a good analogy used on UX design is papercuts for the user, not critical but it degrades user satisfaction.

To the author I will add that that radio button is not following the convension of a dot for the selected state instead of a check. Users may think at first sight that multiple/no selection is possible.
