It's your IP address, you're leeching too much without using the prescribed player. After some time it'll start working again. I bet if you go to the web site it will ask you to log in to prove you're not a bot, if you're not logged in already.

pengaru··on Building a Quake PC
I had pentiums with voodoos back then, when Unreal came out it did not perform particularly well on that hardware compared to nvidia and didn't have the same graphics quality. Unreal with the nvidia TNT2/GeForce 256 marked the beginning of the end for the voodoo era, if memory serves.

3dfx hay day was really quite quake-centric, you'd be remiss to not use their hardware in a vintage quake pc build.

pengaru··on Overdose deaths are falling in America because of a 'supply shock': study
Just a different form of supply shock - to the supply of users.

Living in downtown SF for the last two years has made it painfully obvious those using fent on the streets are not long for this world. It'd an inherently self-solving problem, grim but true.

pengaru··on ICE's Tool to Monitor Phones in Neighborhoods
I wouldn't assume pulling a SIM is enough to hide the phone's location. The modem will still be powered, the IMEI isn't part of the SIM card and is a unique identifier. Plus last I checked you can still contact 911 without being a subscriber.

I'm no expert on cell networks but my impression is the baseband will still ping towers and participate in the cell network on some level. If the phone gets confiscated or its IMEI otherwise associated with you, it can probably be abused to try place you in an area at a given time even without the SIM card.

Just use cameras without any RF hardware. (they tend to have better optics / zoom capabilities anyways)

pengaru··on Eat Real Food
> I mean protein does fill you up faster and better with fewer calories which is good for weight loss or management.

Thank you for exemplifying the problem so clearly - conflating protein with fat when we're really talking about a simple carbohydrates issue of high energy density with negative satiety.

Excess protein is excreted renally, it's easy to overdo and can cause serious problems.

pengaru··on Eat Real Food
The irony is everyone already seems obsessed with protein these days, which I guess plays nicely with meat lovers / producers. The last thing Americans need is more encouragement on the protein front IMO. Suddenly everyone thinks they're a body builder when it comes to food.

The few friends I've known were attempting ketogenic diets over the years kept focusing on the protein side when the actual diet is supposed to be dominated by fat. They've all experienced kidney problems of one sort or another, surprise surprise!

pengaru··on One Formula That Demystifies 3D Graphics
Nothing demystifies 3D graphics more than learning the relevant rudimentary parts of linear algebra.

Casey Muratori's Handmade Hero series has several excellent explainers aimed at aspiring game developers, there's even a math playlist:

Learning that perspective happens via /z is nowhere near sufficiently demystifying IMO

In 2014, the solar sector only accounted for around 11 percent of silver demand. That rose to 29 percent in 2024.

pengaru··on I didn't realize my LG TV was spying on me until I turned off Live Plus
As a thought exercise ask yourself would you notice if any of your closed WiFi-enabled hw scanned for APs and occasionally phoned home, if it didn't go out of its way to inform you of this? What would prevent the vendor from doing so?
pengaru··on I didn't realize my LG TV was spying on me until I turned off Live Plus
If you're in SF we should have that conversation over a beer.
pengaru··on I didn't realize my LG TV was spying on me until I turned off Live Plus
I don't have firsthand knowledge of TVs doing this, but other consumer devices with WiFi most definitely do this. If you don't control the software driving the TV, and the TV has WiFi hardware, I would assume it's at the very least in the cards.

It's rationalized by the vendors as a service to the customer. The mobile app needs to be able to configure the device via the cloud, so increasing the ability for said device to reach cloud by whatever means necessary is a customer benefit.

pengaru··on I didn't realize my LG TV was spying on me until I turned off Live Plus
If these things include WiFi hw it's not so simple.

You'd likely be surprised what proprietary WiFi-enabled consumer products do without your knowledge. Especially in a dense residential environment, there's nothing preventing a neighbor's WiFi AP giving internet access to everything it deems eligible within range. It may be a purely behind the scenes facility, on an otherwise ostensibly secured AP.

pengaru··on An amateur codebreaker may have just solved the Black Dahlia and Zodiac killings
Judging from TFA none of this was determined.

They (allegedly) matched the length of the encrypted name using a process of elimination from an AI-generated pool of possible names, arriving at one name that happened to match the name of Elizabeth Short's murderer, and then a bunch of other circumstantial details aligned.

pengaru··on US blocks all offshore wind construction, says reason is classified
> China is by far the world's biggest polluter, by a factor of 2-3x that of the US so let's not paint them as some beacon of environmental stewardship.

China's leading the planet in development and deployment of renewable energy tech.

What proportion of China's emissions are a consequence of The West's externalizing the manufacturing of what it consumes?

At least with China in the driver's seat it looks like the planet's manufacturing needs will actually get cleaned up. Meanwhile the US will keep pearl clutching as it fades into irrelevance and Zimbabwean hyperinflation.

pengaru··on Jonathan Blow has spent the past decade designing 1,400 puzzles
What's the market size for such a sokoban puzzle game?

I've watched a few of Blow's programming streams which usually spanned both Jai and sokoban development, this was years ago when the sokoban game was clearly an unpolished development mule for the language.

It never seemed like a wise use of resources to try polish that turd of a game concept, certainly not for 9 years. Am I wrong?
